Shabazz Muhammad had surgery to repair a ruptured ligament in his middle finger.
He will miss the rest of the season and the Wolves currently do not have a healthy backup small forward behind Andrew Wiggins besides Glenn Robinson III. Muhammad made some nice strides this season, but he's going to have a tough time gaining value in standard leagues with his lack of diversity on the stat sheet. Feb 23 - 7:05 PM

Shabazz Muhammad will have surgery on his finger and will miss the rest of the season.

Ouch. He played through a finger injury on Friday and it must have been more serious than the team initially thought. The Wolves are also running out of forwards these days with Anthony Bennett out for at least two weeks. Besides Muhammad, Kevin Martin and Andrew Wiggins, Gary Neal was the only other player to get minutes at the two or three on Friday. Neal and maybe even Glenn Robinson III get minutes now. Also, maybe Zach LaVine plays some shooting guard now, which didn't happen on Friday. All that said, Martin and Wiggins gaining a few minutes is really the only major fantasy implication here.
Feb 21 - 6:29 PM

Shabazz Muhammad (finger) and Anthony Bennett (leg) will not travel to face the Rockets on Sunday.

Muhammad didn't look great on Friday and only played 13 minutes. Although, he did log a good chunk of his minutes as a small forward, so that should help once he's ready to go. Muhummad didn't play power forward at all, so his fantasy upside is going to be capped as long as Kevin Martin is active. With Muhammad and Bennett out, Gorgui Dieng will get more run while Adreian Payne may also play more.
Feb 21 - 2:29 PM

Shabazz Muhammad (hand, finger) played just 13 minutes on Friday, scoring seven points on 3-of-4 shooting with two rebounds, one assist and one steal.

It's not a stretch to see Muhammad getting minutes once the veterans start to peel off the track down the stretch. He's not worth owning now in standard leagues but we'll be keeping an eye on him.
Feb 21 - 1:49 AM

Shabazz Muhammad (hand) will play against the Suns on Friday.

He has his fingers on his non-shooting hand taped up and should be fine. The departure of Thaddeus Young really helps Muhammad here because he does log some minutes at power forward. Considering his 24.6 usage rate this season, owners in most leagues should watch him, especially for points and DFS.
Feb 20 - 6:13 PM

Shabazz Muhammad (finger) is being listed as questionable for Friday's game against the Suns.

With Kevin Martin staying put in Minnesota after the trade deadline, Muhammad's value is going to be limited. He doesn't do much aside from score, and he's going to be fighting for minutes with Andrew Wiggins, Kevin Garnett, and Martin, making him a tough guy to own in standard leagues.
Feb 19 - 5:06 PM

Shabazz Muhammad credited his improved play in part to losing 30 pounds since last season.

After a rough rookie season, Muhammad has tripled his minutes and scoring this season, while also improving his shooting percentages. "I think my athletic ability [is the biggest difference after my weight loss]," Muhammad said. "I mean, last year I couldn’t really get up or be as quick as I wanted to be. Now, I’m pretty quick and can play either the two or three position. I think that’s a big thing for me." Despite his improvement, the 22-year-old is tough to roster in standard fantasy leagues as he doesn't offer much outside of his scoring.
Feb 17 - 11:03 AM

Shabazz Muhammad scored six points with four rebounds in 14 minutes on Wednesday against the Warriors.

It was a step down from his big Monday game. He put up a whopping 33.3 usage rate in that game and coach Flip Saunders used him all over the court. The bad news is that he doesn't really do much outside of score and he's going to be hard-pressed for playing time while Thaddeus Young is on the team. However, Muhammad would likely benefit most should Thad be dealt. He's still not offering enough upside to stash in most leagues.
Feb 12 - 12:00 AM

Shabazz Muhammad (oblique) returned to action on Monday, scoring 18 points on 7-of-14 shooting (1-of-4 3PTs, 3-of-6 FTs) with eight rebounds and no steals or blocks in 24 minutes.

Muhammad's stat set doesn't translate to value easily in standard leagues, but this is a promising return nonetheless. He has hurdles to climb and we're not recommending an add yet, but especially as Wolves veterans start to go down he'll be worth owning again.
Feb 10 - 2:16 AM

Shabazz Muhammad is expected to play 15-20 minutes against the Hawks on Monday.

The Wolves are somewhat healthy now, so that's probably all Muhammad would get even if he was at 100 percent. He can be left on the wire in most leagues.
Feb 9 - 6:58 PM

Updating a previous item, Shabazz Muhammad (oblique) is now considered probable to return on Monday.

It's not clear what Muhammad's role will be upon his return, but he'll be back in the lineup after being sidelined for the last few weeks. Andrew Wiggins isn't giving up his minutes, so Muhammad will likely steal his minutes back from a combination of veterans Thaddeus Young and Kevin Martin. Make sure Shabazz is owned in your league, and pick him up if some impatient owner dropped him. Muhammad was averaging 14.8 points, 4.9 rebounds and 1.0 triples on 41.7 percent shooting over 12 games as a starting forward before going down.
Feb 9 - 1:14 PM

Shabazz Muhammad (oblique) is questionable to play on Monday against the Hawks.

Muhammad was previously expected to make his return against the Hawks, but it sounds like the Timberwolves want the sophomore to get through a full day's normal routine before making any determinations. It wouldn't be surprising to see this one go either way, so owners have no choice but to check back for updates. If Muhammad does return, it's not likely he'll be thrown back into the fire right away and could very well be playing in a restricted role.
Feb 9 - 10:42 AM

Shabazz Muhammad (oblique) will not play on Sunday against Detroit, but he is expected to be available for Monday's game vs. Atlanta according to head coach Flip Saunders.

Muhammad has been sidelined since Jan. 9, so his minutes will likely be monitored in the early going. His role is a little uncertain now that Kevin Martin is back in the picture, but he is still worth a flier in deeper leagues for his ability to score points in bunches. We will update Muhammad's status as soon as more details are available.
Feb 7 - 2:12 PM

Shabazz Muhammad (abdomen) is hopeful to play on Monday.

There is still an outside shot he'll play on Sunday, but the team doesn't want to play him on a back-to-back set right now. Muhammad was a usage rate monster before his injury, but he's coming back to a different scenario with so many players healthy. He can be left on the wire in most leagues for now.
Feb 6 - 7:03 PM

Shabazz Muhammad (oblique) will not play in Friday's game vs. the Grizzlies.

Coach Flip Saunders said on Thursday that it's possible that Muhammad could return on Sunday against the Pistons, so owners in deep leagues may want to make a speculative add. Muhammad's role is a little uncertain now that Kevin Martin is healthy, but there is a good chance that the Wolves prioritize his development as they start to look towards the future.
