Hornets coach Steve Clifford said that Cody Zeller has "improved in all areas" this summer, but he faces stiff competition from Marvin Williams for the starting PF job.
Zeller projects as a reserve big man behind Williams and Al Jefferson, but it's encouraging to hear Clifford praising his offseason progress. "He’s worked hard at his shooting, and he’s a lot stronger," Clifford said. "And he worked on all his post moves." Bismack Biyombo should absorb any available backup minutes at C, leaving Zeller to compete with Williams and rookie Noah Vonleh (hernia surgery) at the PF spot. It's not a recipe for fantasy success. The Hornets' coaching staff has encouraged Cody Zeller to improve his offensive repertoire in post-ups and isolations.

The bulk of Zeller's offense last season came in pick-and-rolls and spot-ups, and the fleet big man was most effective in transition. Assistant coach Patrick Ewing was also critical of Zeller's defense in a recent interview, saying, "We need for [Zeller] to do it on both ends, not just look to score." He played well at Summer League but faces competition from Marvin Williams and rookie Noah Vonleh, and there are no guarantees that he'll have a breakthrough sophomore campaign.

Cody Zeller scored 16 points and grabbed seven rebounds in 31 minutes against the Pelicans on Thursday.

He also grabbed two steals and blocked a shot without committing a turnover. Zeller has played well in his three Summer League games thus far, consistently scoring in the mid-teens while staying active on the glass. He is expected to take over the starting power forward spot in Charlotte after the departure of Josh McRoberts.
Jul 17 - 6:14 PM

Cody Zeller is projected to start at PF for the Hornets now that Josh McRoberts has agreed to sign with the Heat.

Charlotte drafted PF Noah Vonleh and they're also interested in free agent Marvin Williams, but for now the job is Zeller's to lose. He had a quiet rookie season and assistant coach Patrick Ewing emphasized that Zeller "has to finish it stronger" when driving to the basket -- it would also help if he made more than 28.2 percent of his shots beyond eight feet.
Jul 9 - 9:58 AM

Cody Zeller double-doubled against the Cavs on Saturday with 12 points, 11 boards, four assists and one block in 37 minutes.

He did a solid job on Spencer Hawes tonight and turned in the first double-double of his career. Zeller has really shown a lot of promise in the past week with his career-high 15 points on Monday, getting a start on Wednesday and he's carried the momentum all the way through. However, Josh McRoberts (ankle) has a chance to return on Wednesday, so Zeller is more of a drop than an add right now.
Apr 5 - 10:58 PM

Cody Zeller scored eight points in 25 minutes vs. the Magic on Friday with four boards and two blocks.

He is going to get another start on Saturday night with Josh McRoberts (ankle) ruled out, so he should be looking at a similar workload. The Bobcats get a decent matchup against the Cavs, which makes Zeller a possible plug-and-play guy for owners seeking help in boards and blocks.
Apr 4 - 9:42 PM

Starting in place of Josh McRoberts (ankle), Cody Zeller had nine points, eight rebounds, three assists and one block during Wednesday's win over the Sixers.

Zeller's best work came on the defensive end, as he harassed Thaddeus Young into a 4-of-13 night. But considering the opponent, the offensive numbers for Zeller were a little disappointing. The underrated athlete is certainly capable of more if McRoberts (day-to-day) continues to be sidelined. Zeller played well ahead of Anthony Tolliver (21 minutes) even though Tolliver racked up big numbers in garbage time.
Apr 2 - 9:59 PM

Cody Zeller will start at power forward for the Bobcats vs. the Sixers on Wednesday in place of Josh McRoberts (ankle).

He's logged a lot of minutes with the other four starters, so he is looking at a tremendous opportunity tonight. Zeller had a career-high 15 points on Monday and could have a chance to surpass that total against the soft Philly interior defense.
Apr 2 - 5:42 PM

Bobcats coach Steve Clifford is pleased with rookie Cody Zeller's growth this season, but noted that he still must learn how to avoid foul trouble.

"He has to be able to contain the ball, contest shots, make it harder on the other guy to get to shots, and do all that without fouling," Clifford said. Zeller agreed with the statement, adding, "There was stuff I could get away with in college on athleticism or being stronger ... Here everybody is just that athletic and just that strong. So little margin for error." With averages of 5.8 points and 4.3 rebounds per game, Zeller has a long way to go before having reliable fantasy appeal.
Apr 2 - 1:07 PM

Cody Zeller played 21 minutes against the Wolves on Friday with 10 points, eight boards, three assists and two fouls.

His minutes continue to creep up and he is playing much better. Zeller averaged 15.1 minutes in January, 16.8 in February and he's now at 18.1 in March. He's not really an upside guy and the Bobcats need Josh McRoberts on the floor to allow Al Jefferson to operate in the paint, so Zeller isn't on the radar in standard leagues.
Mar 14 - 10:07 PM

Bobcats coach Steve Clifford said that rookie Cody Zeller doesn't yet have the "functional strength" necessary to thrive against the league's big men.

"It’s his hips, his core, his back. It takes some time," Clifford said. "People think by throwing [rookies] out there, they get better. I don’t agree. I want a role that 1) he earns and 2) that he can play well in. If that’s 16 minutes right now, then that’s what he needs to be." Zeller remains a poor fantasy option while Josh McRoberts is healthy, and his role is unlikely to change while Charlotte remains in the playoff hunt.
Jan 22 - 9:54 AM

Cody Zeller did not play in the second half of Saturday's game, as coach Steve Clifford opted to play Josh McRoberts for the entire third and fourth quarters.

The result was another loss for the Bobcats, who have dropped three in a row but remain less than a game out of the playoff picture. This doesn't say much for Clifford's confidence in Zeller and more than likely it was an indictment of his post defense, rebounding and overall strength, as he stood little chance against Carlos Boozer and Taj Gibson.
Jan 12 - 10:02 PM

Cody Zeller scored a career-high 10 points with five boards in 12 minutes against the 76ers on Friday.

Bismack Biyombo went down with an ankle sprain, but Zeller's minutes didn't really go up much. He might have to play more center should Biyombo miss time, but he's still hard to pick up in most leagues with all the holes in his game as a rookie.

Cody Zeller played a season-high 26 minutes against the Bucks on Saturday with a line of two points, five boards, one assist, two blocks, three fouls and four turnovers.

He played the entire fourth quarter in garbage time and couldn't score at all in that frame. Zeller had a season high in blocks tonight and looked better on defense, but he still has a lot to learn about scoring against NBA-level competition. His game might not yield fantasy production in standard leagues for a couple months or so.

Updating a previous report, Cody Zeller will come off the bench behind Josh McRoberts and Bismack Biyombo on Saturday.

Steve Clifford may have changed his mind about starting Zeller over Biyombo with Al Jefferson (ankle) out of the lineup, or else it was initially misreported, but either way the rookie will play a reserve role vs. the Heat. Adjust your expectations, and lineups, accordingly.
