Celtics president Danny Ainge did not say whether the Celtics will extend a qualifying offer to Luigi Datome.
The Celtics would need to extend a $2.6 million qualifying offer to make Datome a restricted free agent, so Ainge has a difficult decision ahead of him. Datome became a fan favorite in Boston, but the Celtics may decline to extend an offer considering his limited role with the team. For what it's worth, Ainge did say the Celtics would extend a qualifying offer to Jae Crowder so it's very possible that Datome isn't back in Boston next season. Apr 30 - 11:37 AM

Following the Celtics Game 4 loss on Sunday, Luigi Datome said that it's too early to consider his next move.

Datome expects offers from both the NBA and Europe, but he did say that he enjoyed his time with the Celtics, the team that gave him his first real chance in the NBA. Datome will find a larger role overseas, but he may opt for the NBA payday depending on the offers. He's a three-point specialist and that's about it.

Luigi Datome, who is set to become a free agent in the summer, is hopeful that he will return to Boston next season.

"It’s really early now," Datome said. "I hope during my free agency, hopefully the Celtics, hopefully other teams make a call or offer, because it means that this month, I did something good. For sure, I would like to be involved, feeling like part of the team, not just on the roster. It’s really early now and the focus is on the playoffs." Head coach Brad Stevens has made it clear that he likes Datome's game, and Celtic fans can't get enough of him. All signs point to Datome returning to Boston next season, but he still doesn't figure to be a key part of the rotation after seeing just 12.8 minutes per game during the month of April. He can be viewed as a 3-point specialist in very deep leagues leading into next season.

Luigi Datome, not to be confused with the character your kid uses in Mario Kart, got a start at small forward on Wednesday and hit 9-of-15 shots and three 3-pointers for 22 points, three rebounds and two assists in a win over the Bucks.

This was a meaningless game and the Celtics were without Avery Bradley (quad), leading to Datome's start. Jonas Jerebko and Kelly Olynyk each scored 16 points, and Jared Sullinger added 11, with all three players coming off the bench. Olynyk left with a head injury tonight and didn't return, so check back for updates on his (and Bradley's) status for Sunday's opening playoff game against the Cavaliers. The Celtics enter the postseason hot, winner's of six straight games, and they'll need everything they can get against the Cavs.

Luigi Datome will start for the Celtics on Wednesday with Avery Bradley (quad) unavailable.

Datome is averaging a mere 9.1 minutes per game in 20 appearances off the bench this year, and this marks his first start of the season. He's worth a glance if you need a quick injection of 3-pointers (0.8 per game), but that's about it.
Apr 15 - 6:47 PM

Luigi Datome will be an unrestricted free agent this summer, but there is a growing belief that he will remain in the NBA despite some serious interest from overseas.

Head coach Brad Stevens is a fan of Datome's game and he has become a crowd favorite in Boston, so it wouldn't be surprising to see him stick around with the Celtics as well. Regardless, Datome's role has been inconsistent at best recently, and he isn't on the radar in all but the deepest of leagues.

Apr 4 - 9:51 AM

Luigi Datome has become a crowd favorite in Boston and spoke of his appreciation of the fans' support.

In saying that this is the happiest he's felt on an NBA roster, Datome said Celtics fans have been a huge part of that. "I’m very surprised, but I think people are excited because it’s somebody new," Datome said after the Celtics’ win over the 76ers on Monday. "Brand new in this league, but, of course, the love from the fans is moving me on." While Datome is on his way to becoming a cult hero in Boston, he's only averaging 6.2 points, 1.2 rebounds, and 1.0 three-pointers over his last five games and can remain on waivers in standard fantasy leagues.
Mar 17 - 10:44 AM

Luigi Datome is hoping that he will be able to stay in the NBA next season.

"I am just focused on playing my best basketball in the last 20 games of the regular season and to reach playoffs," said Datome. "When the season ends I will consider all the offers. I hope to get a lot of proposals and I wish most of them come from NBA teams. It would mean I made a good job here. I will decide what is the best for me at 28. The goal is to play with more responsibility. Having responsibility on the court is the thing I miss the most." Datome has scored a combined 23 points over his last two games, but even as much as head coach Brad Stevens seems to like him, it's hard to imagine him sustaining any real value in fantasy leagues moving forward. Owners in deeper leagues can monitor Datome from the wire.

Mar 11 - 9:16 AM

Celtics head coach Brad Stevens said he's been impressed by Luigi Datome's professionalism.

"I'm drawn to people that are ultimate pros," Stevens said. "Just guys that don’t complain, guys that come to work and do their very best. But you still have to take advantage of your opportunity and [Datome has been] putting the ball in basket." Datome has seen some minutes open up with Avery Bradley (elbow), but can be left on waivers in standard fantasy leagues.

Mar 10 - 10:54 AM

Gigi Datome said he is staying ready for any opportunity to contribute to the Celtics this season.

"My job is to try to be ready when the coach decides to put me in," Datome said. "I’ve been waiting all season basically for my opportunity. When coach calls me, I just have to be ready." Datome said he'll never complain about minutes, but it has to feel good to finally have his number called recently after riding the bench for most of his NBA career to date.
Mar 9 - 10:25 AM

Luigi Datome scored 10 points in 10 minutes off Boston's bench on Sunday, making 4-of-5 field goals including a pair of 3-pointers.

He also grabbed one rebound and blocked two shots, and this is about as fluky a line as you'll see from Datome. The fact that he played only 10 minutes should be reason enough to avoid him in all leagues.
Mar 8 - 9:34 PM

Luigi Datome is expected to be bought out or waived.

He was likely just attached in this deal to make the money work with Tayshaun Prince's contract. Datome has played just 17 minutes all season with the Pistons.
Feb 20 - 4:42 PM

Luigi Datome has been traded to the Celtics in the Tayshaun Prince deal.

He had a lot of buzz in the summer of 2013 as a bigger guy with some nice range, but he hasn't been able to stay healthy or really show any other skill. Datome can be ignored in all leagues.
Feb 19 - 3:40 PM

Luigi Datome (ankle) didn't leave the Pistons' bench on Tuesday.

He was listed as a DNP-CD and coach Stan Van Gundy has yet to play him this season, so we're taking him off the injury report.
Tue, Nov 25, 2014 10:58:00 PM

Luigi Datome (ankle) is questionable for Tuesday's game vs. the Bucks.

Datome currently is not a rotation player for the Pistons, and he can remain on the waiver wire in all leagues until he proves otherwise.
