Bulls.com writer Sam Smith posed the question of whether or not rookie Doug McDermott should start at small forward.
Smith is as dialed in as anyone in Chicago and the point he's making is that the Bulls need McDermott's shooting and Mike Dunleavy could fit better as a reserve. Things are going to be tight for McDermott any way one slices it on a deep Bulls squad, but it's clear that he's impressing enough people for owners to keep an eye on him heading into the preseason. Coach Tom Thibodeau said Doug McDermott is "going to shoot" with the Bulls this season.

He's created a lot of buzz since the draft and his 31 points on 12 field goal attempts in a game at summer league was the most impressive offensive showing of any player since the season ended. There's a chance that McDermott starts at small forward, but he'll likely have to earn it in the preseason. Even if he doesn't start, McDermott would likely have a higher usage rate with the second unit, so starting won't make or break his fantasy value.

Derrick Rose praised Doug McDermott for his floor presence, not forcing the issue, and his shooting ability.

Those were three things that were on display for McDermott on his way to earning a first-team spot for Las Vegas Summer League. The Bulls are likely going to bring McDermott off the bench, so his scoring output likely won't be on full display right off the bat.
Jul 30 - 7:04 PM

Doug McDermott stated on Monday that the minor foot injury that sidelined him for the final Summer League game is now fine.

He also scrimmaged against Team USA on Monday, so it's obvious that this will not be an issue moving forward. That being said, unless there's a major shakeup to the Chicago roster, McDermott isn't likely to earn enough minutes in coach Tom Thibodeau's tight rotations to warrant consideration in standard leagues.
Jul 28 - 6:54 PM

The Bulls officially signed rookie Doug McDermott on Tuesday.

McDermott averaged 18.0 points with relative ease during Summer League, making 44.4 percent of his 3-pointers and 95.7 percent of his free throws. He may earn a bench role as a rookie but fantasy owners should approach him cautiously. For what it's worth, reports about Chicago's pursuit of Kevin Love do not mention McDermott as a potential trade chip.
Jul 22 - 4:24 PM

Doug McDermott will not play on Saturday due to a minor left foot injury.

It's extremely minor and there was nothing noticeably wrong in his previous action. In his last three games, McDermott made all 18 free throws to go with a sterling 62.9 effective field goal percentage. He'd have to come out like gangbusters to get significant minutes with the Bulls this upcoming season.
Jul 19 - 8:41 PM

Doug McDermott made 7-of-13 from the field for 20 points with five boards, six assists, two turnovers and four 3-pointers in 26 minutes on Tuesday.

It wasn't 31 points on 12 shots like on Sunday, but it was another impressive game. McDermott's range and size has made him almost unstoppable in summer league, but there are just too many obstacles for him to get significant minutes in his rookie season.
Jul 15 - 6:53 PM

Doug McDermott needed just 12 shots from the field to score 31 points vs. the Nuggets on Sunday, adding one rebound, one assist, one block and five 3-pointers.

He made all 12 shots from the line and made 7-of-12 from the field for a spectacular true shooting percentage of 89.7 percent. The Bulls have an absolutely loaded front line with the additions of Pau Gasol and Nikola Mirotic. McDermott is really going to have to be able to play both forwards spots to get consistent minutes.
Jul 13 - 9:52 PM

Doug McDermott shot just 2-of-8 vs. the Clippers on Saturday with 10 points, five boards, four assists, two 3-pointers and four turnovers.

He played 31 minutes and wasn't too involved in the offense. McDermott led Division I in scoring last year, but he's certainly not going to crack double figures this year with Pau Gasol around.
Jul 12 - 10:51 PM

Coach Tom Thibodeau said he was impressed how Doug McDermott handled his senior season and praised him on Thursday night.

"If you’re just viewing him strictly as a shooter, you’re not casting him in the proper light," Thibodeau said. "Because he’s a lot more than that. We think he’s a complete player. We think he’s capable of playing very good defense." Thibodeau has turned some bad defenders into one's he's been able to hide due to his five-man defense, so the Bulls could call on McDermott for offense in his rookie season. Although, he still has his work cut out for himself to get minutes in the 20s.
Jun 27 - 9:44 PM

Creighton F Doug McDermott was drafted No. 11 overall by the Denver Nuggets, but he was immediately traded to the Bulls for picks Nos. 16 and 19 and a future second-round pick.

The Nuggets have two starting-caliber small forwards on their roster in Danilo Gallinari and Wilson Chandler, and they expect Gallinari (knee) to be recovered next season, so it makes sense that they'd flip McDermott for two picks in a deep draft. McDermott has legitimate 3-point range and the ability to play both forward positions, but he'll face plenty of competition for playing time in Tom Thibodeau's tight rotations.
Jun 26 - 8:44 PM

The Hornets are reportedly "focused" on using their No. 9 pick to draft either Creighton F Doug McDermott or Michigan SG Nik Stauskas.

McDermott has also worked out with the Celtics (No. 6) and Lakers (No. 7), and he's spent time with the Kings (No. 8), though Rudy Gay's return to Sacramento may have eliminated one possible landing spot. At the very least, he's unlikely to fall further than the 76ers with the No. 10 pick.
Jun 22 - 5:22 PM

The Kings have been spending time with draft prospect Doug McDermott in Chicago, according to sources.

The Kings own the No. 8 pick in this year's draft, and it's very possible they could take McDermott with that selection. The Kings could use some depth at the forward positions, and if they lose Rudy Gay to free agency, the want for depth will become a need. McDermott is a capable scorer, but his defense and size has been questioned.
Jun 16 - 4:48 PM

Doug McDermott will workout with the Lakers on June 4 and the Celtics next week.

With the way the stretch four has become a popular move for teams, McDermott could be a draft-day target for several teams. The Lakers mixed and matched their way with a big man next to Pau Gasol, so McDermott would help fill a need at the seven spot in the draft.
Jun 2 - 9:52 AM

Creighton F Doug McDermott recorded a 36.5-inch max vertical at the Combine, ranking 18th among nearly 60 prospects.

McDermott also ranked in the top-15 of the lane agility drill. In other words, he tested well athletically even though he measured in at just 6-foot-6 1/4 without shoes. McDermott is a strong bet to go in the back part of the lottery.
