The Pelicans have placed Russ Smith (thumb) and Patric Young on the inactive list for Tuesday's opener vs. the Magic.
These guys aren't fantasy options in any league, hopefully you didn't need us to tell you that. Smith does have a minor thumb injury, but that's not why he's inactive. Jimmer Fredette has won the backup point guard job. Oct 28 - 6:42 PM

Russ Smith played just four minutes against the Thunder on Thursday.

The imaginary "summer league matters" movement gets sad every once in a while and Smith is another reason. He led Las Vegas at summer league in assists per game, but apparently he's too small for significant run in the NBA.

Rookie and former Louisville star Russ Smith scored 12 points in 13 minutes for the Pelicans on Saturday.

The game was played in Louisville, KY, in front of more than 20,000 people, despite being a preseason game. The crowd went nuts whenever Smith touched the ball and he looked pretty good. But at this point, it would appear that Jimmer Fredette is the second-string point guard, and Smith is No. 3 behind Jrue Holiday. Austin Rivers was playing more shooting guard than point guard tonight.

Russ Smith appears to be entering training camp ahead of Austin Rivers on the point guard depth chart.

Tyreke Evans will still get some run at the point, so Smith is still not a lock for minutes in the teens just yet. He was phenomenal at Las Vegas Summer League, so he'll be worth watching over the next month. If something happens to Jrue Holiday, Smith could find himself on the fantasy radar.

Russ Smith scored 19 points on 7-of-15 shooting on Thursday against the Hornets.

Smith was one of the few bright spots for the Pelicans in their 105-74 loss to the Hornets. He had 19 points, six assists, five rebounds, and one steal in 26 minutes of action. Smith also committed five turnovers, but never seemed out of control when handling the ball. His chances at making the Pelicans roster remain in flux, but he competed hard and played well in his four Summer League appearances.
Jul 17 - 6:23 PM

Russ Smith scored six points with four boards, eight assists, two steals, one block and six turnovers in 28 minutes.

He put up 20 points in the opener and has been the quickest guy in the court in each game. Smith was selected in the second round and being undersized is going to hurt his chances to make the team. Although, the Pelicans losing out on Brian Roberts certainly makes it possible for him to make the team.

The 76ers selected Louisville PG Russ Smith at No. 47 on Thursday, but he was traded to the Pelicans for Pierre Jackson.

The Sixers have six picks in the draft and they opted to flip one for a more established player. Smith became Louisville's all-time leader in steals during his four seasons and his defensive ability is central to his appeal as an NBA prospect. He added 18.2 points and 4.6 assists during his senior year, while shooting 38.7 percent from downtown, and was named to the AP All-American First Team.
