Edy Tavares suffered a broken right hand in practice this week.
The Cavs have had some bad luck with centers with Edy, Andrew Bogut and Chris Andersen going down this season. A broken hand usually results in 4-6 weeks off, but Tavares isn't the in the rotation. His upside is still something to watch with his 7'9" wingspan, but Tavares is still a major work in progress. He'll likely be a treat in Summer League. May 13 - 3:07 PM

Edy Tavares had a monster debut for the Cavaliers on Wednesday, racking up six points, 10 rebounds, one assist and six blocks in 24 minutes vs. Toronto.

The Cavaliers rested their big three in the regular-season finale, but Tavares proved that he could give the Cavs some quality minutes off the bench if they call his name during the postseason. The 7'3" big man is an intriguing project for the Cavs to develop this summer and his shot-blocking ability puts him on the radar as a stash in dynasty formats. For what it's worth, Tavares has posted a triple-double in the D-League with 15 points, 11 rebounds and 12 blocks.

Cavs sign C Edy Tavares.

It's a fun signing for the final day of the season. In the D-League last month, Tavares posted a triple-double of 15 points, 11 rebounds and 12 blocks. If the Cavs rest everyone maybe we see some Edy today.

The Cavaliers are expected to sign free agent center Walter Tavares on Wednesday.

Tavares was waived by the Hawks back in October of 2016, but the 7'3" big man has impressed in the D-League, averaging 10.6 points, 7.7 rebounds and 2.7 blocks. The Cavaliers will be signing him to a multi-year deal, and while he likely won't crack the rotation this season, maybe he gets some burn if the Cavs rest multiple players in the season finale on Wednesday. He's an intriguing project for the Cavs to develop this summer and he's worth monitoring in dynasty leagues.

Walter Tavares isn't thinking about a possible return to Europe just yet.

"For me, returning to Europe would be like giving up," Tavares said. "I’m going to let this year pass and then I’ll figure out what to do. I spoke with my agent and this is the best option. Stay here, play well and wait for a team to call me. I’m going to give it all this year and I’ll decide if I stay here for another year or take a step back and go back to Europe." He was waived by the Hawks back in October but impressed at the D-League showcase, averaging 17.0 points, 10.5 rebounds and 2.5 blocks. He hasn't received much NBA interest yet, but we'll let you know when that changes.

Toronto's D-League affiliate has activated Edy Tavares and waived J.T. Terrell.

Tavares was claimed off of waivers using the team’s top waiver priority more than a week ago, but sorting out paperwork for the Cape Verde native to play in Canada took a bit of time. In 29 D-League games last season, he averaged 9.2 points, 8.4 rebounds, and 3.3 blocks while shooting 65.2 percent. The Raps have plenty of depth at center, so it is unlikely Tavares sees NBA action anytime soon.

Former Hawks C Edy Tavares is nearing and agreement with Toronto's D-League affiliate.

Tavares has an intriguing combination of size and skill, so it will be interesting to see if he can work his way back into the NBA.

The Hawks have waived Walter Tavares.

They are waiving Tavares in order to sign Ryan Kelly, which makes this move even more puzzling. However, the impressive play by Mike Muscala probably made Tavares expendable. He has incredible size with great upside for his blocks, so hopefully he lands in a great situation.

Edy Tavares scored 15 points with 10 rebounds, one assist and one block in 21 minutes against the Grizzlies on Thursday.

Can we start the Free Edy Tavares moment? He's still one of the most raw players in the NBA and it's going to take a few years to get all his arms and legs under control. Tavares is still only on the board in Dynasty leagues.

Walter Tavares racked up another five blocks in just 25 minutes during Thursday's summer league loss to the Wizards, adding eight points, seven boards, one assist, one steal and three turnovers.

Tavares sure has a knack for racking up the swats, but it's going to be tough for him to earn enough minutes to churn out standard league value while operating as Dwight Howard's backup. That being said, if D-12 misses a game for any reason this upcoming season, Tavares could make for a very attractive low-budget DFS target.

Edy Tavares played 14 minutes on Monday, scoring four points with eight rebounds and five blocks.

He did receive stitches to his lower lip and did return -- that explains the low playing time. Tavares is unbelievably long and opponents are really having a tough time getting shots off against him. On the offensive side, his free throw stroke looks improved, making a respectable 7-of-9 in Las Vegas. If Dwight Howard misses time at any point, we might see the 7'3" big man block some shots during the regular season.

Hawks summer league coach Taylor Jenkins said Walter Tavares has "definitely progressed."

"He definitely has come a long way in just one year," the coach said. "Getting our hands on him at the beginning of last year and working on his body and getting him up to speed on what the NBA game is all about. I think his running habits have gotten a lot better, his activity on defense for a guy his size and what he is able to do in pick-and-roll, move his feet better, using his hands, changing shots at the rim. There is obviously stuff that he can clean up, but definitely encouraged." The big man says he has to get "more confidence on offense," but that's a product of experience and continued repetitions.

Walter Tavares blocked four shots in 26 minutes of action during Sunday's summer league win over the Wizards, adding 10 points, five boards, one assist and one turnover.

Tavares looked like a man amongst boys out there, controlling the paint with his size and superb shot blocking ability. Tavares was taken with the No. 43 overall selection in the 2014 draft and labeled a project, but perhaps he’s finally ready to see consistent minutes as a primary reserve in Atlanta. That being said, he won’t have any standard league value while Dwight Howard and Tiago Splitter (hip surgery) are healthy.

Hawks' assistant coach Taylor Jenkins said that Walter Tavares has "come a long way" since his rookie season.

"I think his running habits have gotten a lot better," said Jenkins, "his activity on defense for a guy his size and what he is able to do in pick-and-roll, move his feet better, using his hands, changing shots at the rim. There is obviously stuff that he can clean up but definitely encouraged." Tavares has the talent to be an elite shot blocker in the league, but with Dwight Howard coming to Atlanta, he's going to be a third-string center with little value.

Walter Tavares will play in the summer league.

The 24-year-old center didn't get much of an opportunity with the Hawks this season, but he did lead the D-League in blocks per game (3.3). Tavares is 7'3" and has some fantasy appeal for his shot-blocking ability, and there's a chance that he could crack the rotation next season If Al Horford leaves in free agency.
