Hawks rookie Edy Tavares will be "a good player," according to teammate Al Horford, though it will "probably take him time to get used to the speed of the NBA game."
Tavares was drafted in 2014 but he spent last season playing in Spain, where he averaged 8.0 points, 7.9 rebounds and 1.8 blocks in 22 minutes per game. He is 7'3" with an enormous wingspan but may spend the 2015-16 season in the D-League -- either way, he's unlikely to crack the rotation while Horford and Tiago Splitter are healthy. Aug 23 - 3:07 PM

Edy Taveres suffered a right index finger laceration on Saturday.

He was having another solid game before the injury, scoring six points with five rebounds and one block in 14 minutes. Taveres has a 7'9" wingspan and the Hawks will certainly be hoping they have the next Rudy Gobert on their hands. Of course, Taveres has a lot to prove.

Walter 'Edy' Tavares is adjusting to the pace of the NBA.

"He forgot a lot of what we are doing last year," Hawks assistant Kenny Atkinson said. "His team in Europe was playing a totally different pick-and-roll coverage. But we are on him. We are watching film with him." Through two summer league games, Tavares is averaging 5.0 points, 5.5 rebounds, 3.5 blocks and 5.5 fouls in 19 minutes of action.

The Atlanta Hawks have officially signed Walter Tavares.

Tavares is a massive 7'3" center who averaged 8.7 points, 7.8 rebounds, and 1.8 blocks in Spain last season, but he is still very raw. The Hawks are looking to make another deep playoff run next season, and it's hard to imagine Tavares getting significant minutes right out of the gate. Owners in deeper leagues should monitor his progress, but he can be ignored on draft day in standard leagues.

Tavares is a 7'3" center who currently plays for Gran Canaria in Spain, where he's averaging 8.7 points, 7.8 rebounds and 1.8 blocks in just 22 minutes per game. He's extremely raw and is unlikely to make a fantasy impact as a rookie.

Walter Taveres has decided to spend the 2014-15 season with Herbalife Gran Canaria of Spain's ACB League.

Taveres averaged 6.0 points, 4.3 rebounds and 1.3 blocks in six games with the Hawks during Las Vegas Summer League after being selected with the 43rd pick of the 2014 NBA Draft. The 7'3" center has only been playing basketball for five years, so another season of growth overseas should help the 22-year-old develop his game to be more NBA-ready.

The Hawks took C Walter Tavares with the 43rd pick in the draft.

The 22-year old just signed a three-year deal and won’t be coming over to the US for at least a couple years. He’s a giant at 7’3", 265 pounds, has the wingspan of a bus, and shot the ball well at ACB last year with 58.5 percent from the field and 72.2 percent from the line. Tavares doesn’t have much of a post-up game and he’s considered as one of the biggest projects in the draft. He may never play a game in Atlanta.

Draft prospect Walter Tavares has signed a three-year contract extension with the Spanish team Gran Canaria, according to Sportando.

Tavares is a 7'3" center who worked out for the Celtics in mid-June and was projected to be a borderline first-round pick in this summer's draft. His new contract in Spain means that any team drafting him will have to wait a few years before he joins the NBA, and they may also face a hefty buyout. He's still eligible to be drafted, but may not come off the board until later in the second round.
