Knicks coach David Fizdale said Mario Hezonja needs to work on his decision-making.
"It may be moments where he’s sound in certain areas and then he might take a gamble at a steal or a home run at shooting a three, or a home run no-look pass," Fizdale said. "It’s just getting him to see when we need a base hit and when we need a home run." Fizdale did praise Hezonja for his work ethic and called him a "serious competitor," but now we have an idea of why his minutes have been all over the place. Nov 12 - 9:33 AM

Mario Hezonja hit 6-of-18 shots and a 3-pointer for 15 points, six rebounds, two assists, a steal and a block in 36 minutes of Monday's double-overtime loss to the Bulls.

He's played well in his last three games, averaging 12 points, 5.0 rebounds, 1.3 steals and 1.3 3-pointers, but with Kevin Knox making his return tonight, along with Allonzo Trier, Damyean Dotson and Tim Hardaway Jr. (who was out tonight with a sore back) all playing well, things are going to get very crowded for the Knicks wings. Hezonja should be trending down once Knox gets up to speed and once Hardaway is ready to play again.
Nov 5 - 11:22 PM

Mario Hezonja hit 4-of-9 shots and two 3-pointers for 10 points, eight rebounds, three assists and three steals in 25 minutes of a 108-95 loss to the Wizards.

Tim Hardaway Jr. suffered a back injury tonight and his status is completely up in the air for Monday, as well as the rest of the Knicks' four games this week. Hezonja and Allonzo Trier are two players who could help fill in for Hardaway if he's out of action, and Hezonja did a little bit of everything tonight.
Nov 4 - 8:49 PM

Mario Hezonja scored three points with seven rebounds and two turnovers in 13 minutes against the Pacers on Wednesday.

He just hasn't been able to string games together with three subpar games in a row. Things likely won't get any better when Kevin Knox (ankle) comes back in November, so Mario worth holding.
Oct 31 - 11:56 PM

Mario Hezonja scored six points with three rebounds, two assists and one turnover in 18 minutes against the Warriors on Friday.

He was -16 in 18 minutes. His role hasn't really changed much since Kevin Knox (ankle) went down with Damyean Dotson firmly ahead of him right now. Hezonja should be dropped in most leagues and/or swapped for Dotson.
Oct 26 - 10:03 PM

Mario Hezonja shot just 4-of-15 from the field en route to 13 points on Wednesday, going 3-of-6 at the line with two 3-pointers, one rebound and one assist.

Knicks coach David Fizdale suggested recently that he might "look at tweaking something" in the rotation, and Hezonja could benefit from any changes. "I’ll get into the film after the Miami game and really evaluate the five games of basketball," Fizdale said, "Assess it and make decisions from there." Hezonja isn't helping his case for a starting role with inconsistent play to start the season, but he'd be worth grabbing if he does get the nod ahead of Lance Thomas.

Mario Hezonja benefited the most in Kevin Knox's absence, scoring 18 points (8-of-16 FGs) with four rebounds, three assists, two steals, and two 3-pointers in 30 minutes against the Bucks on Monday.

Knox is out 2-4 weeks, which means Hezonja is a great add in his stead. The Knicks will probably play it ultra-cautious with their prized rookie Knox, meaning it could be closer to the high-end of that timetable. Hezonja isn't afraid to shoot, which he showed in this one, and can help across the board. He took some bad shots, but also helped the Knicks comeback effort. Add him and also use him in DFS over the next month.
Oct 22 - 11:46 PM

Mario Hezonja could see an uptick in minutes with Kevin Knox (ankle) sidelined.

Knox is expected to miss 2-4 weeks. However, the Knicks will surely want to wait until Knox is as close to 100 percent as possible before he is cleared for game action. Thus, he could be out until Thanksgiving. Hezonja has been awful through the Knicks first three games, but increased playing time could help him snap out of his slump. Remember, Super Mario started 30 games for Orlando last season and averaged 14.0 points, 5.6 rebounds, 2.2 assists, 1.8 3-pointers and 1.5 steals in those starts.
Oct 22 - 11:07 AM

Mario Hezonja played just 10 minutes with two points and two rebounds against the Celtics on Saturday.

He might be in the doghouse with Hezonja not really getting more run despite Kevin Knox (ankle) getting hurt. He probably belongs on the wire in most leagues until further notice.
Oct 20 - 10:49 PM

Mario Hezonja played 15 minutes in Friday's preseason win over the Pelicans with five points, four rebounds, one steal, one block and one triple.

He's now played 22, 25 and 15 minutes through three games with Kevin Knox getting heavy run as the starting SF. We liked Hezonja as a late-round flier when he inked a one-year deal with the Knicks, but it's time to pump the brakes if the preseason is an indication. He'll need a strong finish to move back up draft boards.
Oct 5 - 10:48 PM

Mario Hezonja was not pleased with his performance in Monday's preseason debut.

"Everything is on me," Hezonja said, who came off the bench behind Lance Thomas. "I need to make a clearer path to see where my teammates are... [The] turnovers, that’s really pissing me off." Hezonja finished Monday's preseason win with eight points, one 3-pointer, five boards, two dimes, one block and five turnovers in 22 minutes. He's competing with Thomas for the starting four-spot in New York but will need to do a better job of handling the rock if he hopes to come out on top in that battle.
Oct 3 - 10:10 AM

David Fizdale said that he won't commit to a starting lineup until after the preseason, but reiterated that he wants a "bigger" small forward.

Fizdale isn't comfortable starting Courtney Lee or Tim Hardaway Jr. at the three-spot, so those two will be battling for the starting SG position over the course of the preseason. The 6-foot-8 Hezonja fits the bill of a "bigger" small forward, so he should have the inside track to start, particularly with New York hurting for offensive options. Hezonja is certainly worth a late-round flier.
Sep 26 - 1:37 PM

When asked where his sweet spot on the court is, Mario Hezonja simply responded: "Everywhere, Super Mario."

Hezonja has never been one to lack in confidence, and he did play well as a starter in Orlando last season, boasting averages of 14.0 points, 5.6 boards, 2.2 dimes, 1.8 triples, 1.4 steals and just 1.6 turnovers per game on 46.0% shooting. He should be able to start in New York, and they could lean on him offensively while Kristaps Porzingis (knee) is out, making him an attractive late-round target on draft day.
Sep 24 - 3:14 PM

Mario Hezonja has agreed to a one-year, $6.5 million deal with the Knicks, according to ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski.

There was a lot of smoke here since the beginning of free agency, and the New York Post reported earlier that a one-year deal was on the table. It's a solid deal for both sides, allowing Hezonja to build his value before hitting free agency again in 2019, while giving the Knicks more size on the wings. Courtney Lee was already on the trade block and he's all but gone now that Super Mario is in New York.
Jul 1 - 9:12 PM

The Knicks have put a one-year offer on the table for Mario Hezonja, according to Marc Berman of the New York Post.

It's expected to be for a portion of the midlevel exception, so that would put this offer at around a maximum of $8.6 million. It makes sense for both sides because the Knicks do not want to put money on their books for next summer, and Mario gets to show what he can do on a shorthanded team. Plus, Mario showing he can play PF is a big part of this for his potential value for the team.
