Sam Cassell has been allowed out of his contract with the Wizards to join Doc Rivers' coaching staff in Los Angeles.

Cassell has done a terrific job with the Wizards summer league team the past couple seasons and his enthusiasm really stands out. The Clippers were losing assistants left and right about a month ago with guys like Alvin Gentry and Ty Lue heading elsewhere, but they're slowly getting some credible guys to join Doc on the bench.

The Clippers are working on a deal to add Sam Cassell as an assistant.

He is currently with the Wizards and has been a coach at summer league for the past two seasons. Cassell has been one of the most vocal coaches at summer league and he's shown some potential as a head coach someday.

The Wizards have hired Randy Wittman and Sam Cassell as assistant coaches for Flip Saunders. Cassell announced his retirement after 15 seasons in the NBA.

"Randy...is very familiar with my system," Saunders said. "I always regarded Sam as a coach on the floor...and he brings instant credibility as a three-time NBA champion." Both assistants worked with Saunders in Minnesota (Cassell as a player), so the transition should be pretty smooth.

Sam Cassell was waived by the Kings soon after being acquired from the Celtics via trade.

Cassell could re-sign with the Celtics, or join a team like the Nuggets (he has a good relationship with coach George Karl). He's more of a player-coach at this point in his career and we've probably seen the last of his fantasy usefulness.

The deal sending Sam Cassell and cash from the Celtics to the Kings in exchange for a future second-round pick is reportedly complete.

This deal is financially motivated for both teams, and the Kings are expected to waive Cassell, freeing him to potentially sign with another team. Regardless of where he might end up, the 39-year-old hasn't appeared in a single game this season and is unlikely to have significant fantasy value.

The Kings agreed in principle to a trade with the Boston Celtics on Monday night, acquiring Sam Cassell and cash in exchange for a future second-round pick.

The Celtics will now pay less luxury tax, though it's possible they will sign another player to fill Cassell's roster spot. The deal is expected to be finalized on Tuesday.

Sam Cassell called the Knicks decision to keep Stephon Marbury inactive "bad for the league."

"It doesn't look good for both parties," he said. "Steph wants to play and he's better than the guys playing ahead of him. I don't understand it." We'll see if the Knicks take Sam's advice, but for right now he isn't going anywhere fast.

Despite speculation that Sam Cassell could get cut and become a coach, it sounds like he will remain on the Celtics roster this season.

"I haven’t even discussed coaching with Sam," said GM Danny Ainge. "He’s here to play." Cassell's presence means that Boston will probably cut Darius Miles before the regular season starts - he shouldn't be owned in any leagues anyway.

Sam Cassell, Kevin Garnett, Ray Allen and Paul Pierce all sat out on Thursday.

All four are expected to play in the next one, but Cassell is just trying to make the team at this point. Don't draft him.

Sam Cassell has only appeared in one preseason game and could end up coaching the Celtics this season, rather than playing for them.

When coach Doc Rivers was asked about Cassell coaching, he responded, "I don't know yet. We'll see." The Celtics need to cut one more player, and GM Danny Ainge said recently that it won't be Brian Scalabrine. That leaves Cassell and Darius Miles as the most likely roster casualties...regardless of who makes the team, neither guy is worth drafting.

Sam Cassell will miss Friday's exhibition game against the Cavaliers after attending to his sick grandfather in Maryland.

Despite the fact he'll be at the game in time for shootaround, Doc Rivers has decided to give him the night off.

Sam Cassell could miss the Celtics exhibition game on Wednesday because he is in Baltimore with his grandfather, who is recovering from a heart attack.

The Celts hardly need Cassell for a preseason game -- coach Doc Rivers intends to rest his veterans and advised fans to "get there early" if they want to catch KG, Pierce or Ray Allen in action.

Sam Cassell signed a one-year contract with the Celtics on Monday.

He may be the third-string point guard this season behind Rajon Rondo and Eddie House, so don't consider drafting him in normal-sized leagues.

The signing of guard Sam Cassell by Boston is expected to be announced soon.

Don't be fooled by his big name on draft night, as it's possible Eddie House is now the No. 2 point guard in Boston.
