Larry Drew has had the third year option on his contract picked up and will return as Hawks head coach.
Contrary to an earlier report from the Portland Tribune which called Drew's return "unlikely," the head coach will return to the Atlanta bench. It's going to be an interesting offseason for Atlanta as the team looks to improve without having much flexibility to do so. May 18 - 12:35 PM

The Atlanta Hawks are talking to General Manager Rick Sund about returning next season.

Sund is in the last year of his contract and has drawn interest from the Blazers. The Hawks are also undecided on Head Coach Larry Drew's future.

The Portland Tribune reports that Larry Drew's contract option for next season is unlikely to be exercised.

Although it's certainly possible the head coach won't be retained, take this with a grain of salt right now. The fact that the report is from Portland rather than Atlanta is odd, but the Hawks will have to make a decision on its head coach before long.

Joe Johnson said he is not happy with his offensive touches in the first-round series against the Celtics.

Johnson got 28 shots up in Game 3, but just eight in Game 4. For the series, he's at 17.0 attempts per game, more than his 15.5 shots per game during the regular season. The bigger concern is Johnson's efficiency -- he's shooting 36.8 percent from the field, 24.0 percent from 3-point range and 71.4 percent from the line in the playoffs.
May 7 - 5:45 PM

Joe Johnson said he wants to play "a little quicker" in Game 2 against the Celtics.

"Try to get a lot of easy baskets in transition," he said. Johnson wants to move away from isolation plays and score more in transition because "they are the best defensive team in the league." Johnson had just 11 points on 3-of-15 shooting in 38 minutes on Sunday.
May 1 - 10:59 AM

Joe Johnson led the Hawks with 28 points and hit a miraculous 3-pointer at the shot-clock buzzer late in the game that sealed a win over the Clippers on Tuesday.

He added seven rebounds, three assists and six 3-pointers on the night, as the Hawks continue to battle for homecourt advantage in their first-round series against the Celtics. Josh Smith, who was erroneously reported out during the pregame show, had 18 points, 10 boards and five assists, while Jeff Teague chipped in with 21 points in the win. The Hawks would clinch homecourt advantage over the Celtics with a win over Dallas on Thursday, or a Celtics loss to the Bucks on Thursday.
Apr 24 - 10:16 PM

Joe Johnson scored 22 points on 9-of-14 shooting with four rebounds, three assists and four 3s on Sunday as the Hawks fell to the Knicks.

Johnson scored 30 points on Friday and seems to be heating up at the right time for the Hawks. Josh Smith had a quiet game, posting 14 points, five rebounds and four assists while also turning the ball over five times.
Apr 22 - 4:50 PM

Joe Johnson, who has failed to reach 20 points in any game this month, erupted for 30 points on 11-of-18 shooting with five rebounds and six assists on Friday night.

JJ has been in a bit of a funk recently, but he bounced back in a big way tonight. Yes, the Celtics rested almost all of their starters against the Hawks, but at this point fantasy owners will take what they can get.
Apr 20 - 9:47 PM

Joe Johnson had just seven points on 2-of-12 shooting in Sunday's loss to the Raptors.

The Hawks simply didn't show up for this one. They fell behind by 14 points at halftime and never truly threatened. Johnson had previously scored in double figures in 23 straight games.
Apr 15 - 9:12 PM

Joe Johnson looked sluggish in 28 minutes on Wednesday, scoring just 12 points as the Hawks got blown out by the Bulls

Johnson got popped in the mouth on Tuesday and received several stitches. He didn't look close to his best on Wednesday but the Hawks were playing their fifth game in six nights, including the 4 OT thriller, so a little lag is expected.
Mar 28 - 10:48 PM

Joe Johnson received several stitches in his mouth after taking an inadvertent shot from teammate Zaza Pachulia, and struggled on Tuesday, finishing with 11 points on 4-of-14 shooting.

He also hit a three and handed out eight assists, but didn't look quite right after the injury. Last week's Player of the Week should be fine, so just keep him in your lineup until further notice. But beware that those back-to-back three-game weeks are going to painful for owners of Hawks.
Mar 27 - 10:58 PM

Joe Johnson left Tuesday's game in the early minutes after getting popped in the mouth, and trainer Wally Blase was unable to stop the bleeding.

Johnson and Blase headed to the locker room for stitches, and he returned to the game early in the second quarter.
Mar 27 - 8:17 PM

Joe Johnson made 8-of-8 FGs in an 18-point first quarter, and by the end of Sunday's quadruple-overtime marathon he had 37 points on 14-of-28 FGs, 4-of-7 threes and 5-of-8 FTs.

Johnson, who has been hot for most of March, added eight rebounds, two assists and one steal, with five turnovers in 55 minutes. Josh Smith nearly triple-doubled with 22 points, 10 rebounds and six assists, but that's basically what he averages these days anyway.
Mar 25 - 10:23 PM

Joe Johnson turned the ball over seven times and Josh Smith hit just 5-of-20 shots as the Hawks lost to the Celtics by the score of 79-76 on Monday.

Yikes, this game was ugly. Johnson still scored 25 points with six boards and four 3-pointers, and Smoove nearly triple-doubled with 10 points, 11 boards, eight assists, and two steals. Jeff Teague (eight points, five boards, three assists) smiled after his airball three with the game on the line, and then forgot to cover his man on the immediate, subsequent inbound play by the Celtics as time expired. Kirk Hinrich scored nine points with two rebounds, three assists, a block, and three ugly turnovers.
Mar 19 - 10:55 PM

Joe Johnson stayed hot on Sunday, knocking down 11-of-16 shots on his way to 28 points, four rebounds and five assists.

Johnson also went 3-of-4 from deep, and is really starting to get on a roll. That is great news for owners, as the Hawks play five times next week. Sit back and enjoy the ride.
