Lionel Hollins said that he envisions Joe Johnson as a starter next season.
"I doubt Joe will be coming off the bench this year," Hollins said. "I don’t think we have anybody to put Joe in a position where he’ll have to come off the bench. But if that should happen, we’ll talk about it and deal with it, but I envision him being a starter." Rondae Hollis-Jefferson is still a threat to Johnson, but his offensive limitations could hold him back. Johnson's best days are clearly behind him and it wouldn't be surprising if Hollins keeps him on a short leash if he doesn't perform. Aug 1 - 12:11 PM

Joe Johnson - G/F - Nets

According to Nets Daily, Joe Johnson likely wasn't going to be traded even before the Nets decided to waive Deron Williams.

The Nets would have had a very difficult time moving Johnson's massive contract anyways, and they would need to take on some bad contracts from other teams in order to make a trade work. Johnson's relationship with Deron Williams wasn't the best, so maybe he can bounce back next season. However, Johnson is well past his prime, and it's hard to get excited about a player who has seen his stats plummet over the last few seasons.

Joe Johnson - G/F - Nets

Mikhail Prokhorov referred to Joe Johnson as a "core" player in a video released to Nets fans.

The Nets unsuccessfully shopped Johnson around the league for quite a while, but it now appears that they are ready to move forward with him. Unloading the contract of Deron Williams certainly helped things, but the Nets will still be eager to see Johnson's massive contract expire next summer. Johnson's numbers have regressed in recent years, and Nets' play-by-play announcer Ian Eagle even said that he wouldn't be surprised if he was demoted to a bench role. If it isn't obvious enough, Johnson won't be a recommended target in fantasy leagues next season.

Joe Johnson may come off the bench for the Nets next season, according to the Nets' play-by-play announcer Ian Eagle.

"I wouldn’t be shocked if he came off the bench this year," Eagle said. "That would not shock me in the least bit." We'd like to see this from one of the coaches in Brooklyn before reading too much into this, but after Johnson's production fell off a cliff towards the end of the 2014-15 season (likely due to fatigue) this is certainly something interesting to ponder. If Johnson does come off the bench, rookie Rondae Hollis-Jefferson would likely start at small forward, with Jarrett Jack running the offense.

Joe Johnson - G/F - Nets

Joe Johnson is reportedly no longer being shopped by the Nets.

The Nets have made a lot of cost saving moves this offseason, and now they can actually withstand having Johnson's massive contract on the books, and still compete for a playoff spot in the East. Johnson will be in a contract year, but his numbers have been on a steady downward trajectory for the past four seasons. He averaged 14.4 points, 4.8 rebounds, 3.7 assists and 1.5 three-pointers per game last season, so that's basically his ceiling.

A trade sending Joe Johnson to the Cavaliers has become "stagnant," sources told ESPN's Chris Broussard.

The Nets were looking for another team to potentially take Anderson Varejao's contract, but they've been unsuccessful in that pursuit. For now, an Iso-Joe trade is in play but a long ways away from becoming a reality.

The Cavaliers are considering a trade for Joe Johnson with Brendan Haywood's expiring contract as a trade chip, according to ESPN's Brian Windhorst.

Johnson is owed a whopping $24.9 million and the Cavs are sparing no expense in their pursuit of a championship this season -- we'd say they're going for broke, but owner Dan Gilbert has a $4.8 billion net worth. The Nets are eager to unload Johnson to lighten their luxury-tax payments this season, and they've spoken with multiple other teams including the Grizzlies.

Joe Johnson - G/F - Nets

The Nets have been actively shopping Joe Johnson over the past two days, according to sources of Mike Mazzeo.

The Nets have basically been "actively shopping" Johnson for the past two years, but it's hard to find any takers with his semi-ridiculous contract (he's owed $25.9 million next season). Johnson's numbers have been falling for three straight seasons, and he averaged 14.4 points, 4.8 rebounds, 3.7 assists and 1.5 three-pointers during his 2014-15 campaign. Expect the decline to continue next year.

Joe Johnson - G/F - Nets

The Nets and Grizzlies discussed a Joe Johnson trade, sources told ESPN's Marc Stein.

The two sides were unable to find a workable deal, but it gave the Nets confidence that they'll ultimately be able to move Johnson. Despite a massive $24.9M salary this season, Johnson is an expiring contract. The Pistons and Hornets have also registered "exploratory interest," which could be as simple as a "Sup?" text.

The Nets may explore trading Joe Johnson, according to David Aldridge of NBA.com.

Johnson still has $24.8 million and two years left on his contract, but Aldridge writes he'd have no shortage of suitors if the Nets put him on the trade block. With the team looking to build around Brook Lopez, Johnson may very well find himself sporting a new uniform next year, but fantasy owners shouldn't expect too much no matter where he plays as Johnson will turn 34 this summer and is coming off a down season during which he averaged 14.4 points, 4.8 boards, 3.7 assists, and 1.5 three-pointers.

Joe Johnson - G/F - Nets

Tim Bontemps of the New York Post speculates that Joe Johnson could be playing for a new team in the 2015-16 season.

Johnson is heading into the final year of his max contract that will be on the books for $24.9 million, so it won't be easy to move him in a trade. Johnson battled through knee tendinitis and averaged just 14.4 points, 4.8 boards, 3.7 assists and 1.5 3-pointers during the regular season, and it's pretty obvious that he isn't the same player that he once was. The Nets are eager to build around Brook Lopez and Thaddeus Young moving forward, so Johnson's time in Brooklyn could be up. This will be a story worth monitoring this summer.

Joe Johnson - G/F - Nets

Joe Johnson admitted that he has "no idea" what the Nets' roster will look like next season.

"I don't see us coming back as the same team," said Johnson, whose 14.4 points this season were his lowest since 2002-03. "To not even be a .500 ballclub in the East, it's disheartening ... I think everyone in that locker room is unsure of the future here." Brook Lopez and Thaddeus Young are the most pressing issues for Brooklyn, as Lopez is an unrestricted free agent and Young has a player option for 2015-16.

Joe Johnson - G/F - Nets

Joe Johnson scored 17 points on 6-of-17 FGs and 5-of-8 FTs during a loss to his former team in Atlanta on Sunday, adding six rebounds, six assists and two steals without any turnovers.

The home crowd booed Johnson every time he touched the ball, and the 14-year veteran shot poorly while missing all six of his 3-point attempts. He took over primary ball-handling duties on many possessions down the stretch and will continue to be leaned on heavily -- he's averaging 34.6 minutes per game over the past month, the highest total of any player more than 30 years old.

Joe Johnson - G/F - Nets

Joe Johnson scored just seven points with three rebounds, nine assists, two steals and one 3-pointer in 28 minutes tonight.

He had a 10.5 usage rate tonight and maybe he wasn't 100 percent due to an illness. Even before tonight, Johnson has not been playing well and may lose playing time to Bojan Bogdanovic. Bogey is the better player to own right now.

Joe Johnson - G/F - Nets

Joe Johnson (illness) will play Friday vs. the Wizards, as expected.

He missed shootaround, but he was never expected to sit this one out. Johnson had been struggling badly up until his 21-point performance from Wednesday, so hopefully he can build off that performance. He's not necessarily a must-start guy on such a busy Friday night.
