Avery Johnson is in no rush to return to a head coaching gig.
"If there’s a situation that makes a tremendous amount of sense," Johnson said, "something similar with what I had in Dallas, great ownership, a star player in Dirk Nowitzki that had a high level of integrity and was coachable, and stability in terms of a contractual situation that players can respect, then [yes], but other than that we’ll just keep doing what we’re doing." This situation does not describe any of the current head coaching vacancies, so it's safe to assume Avery will not return to the bench anytime soon. Sun, May 18, 2014 11:59:00 AM

Avery Johnson is still interested in the Nets' head coaching job, despite their falling to the #3 pick in the draft lottery.

Johnson is said to like Nets president Rod Thorn, the idea of coaching in Brooklyn, and the millions of dollars new owner Mikhail Prokhorov can spend on free agents. In turn, the Nets like Johnson's coaching record (194-70 in four seasons with Dallas), his personality, and his savvy handling of the media. It should be noted that Johnson had a second interview with the Hawks on Saturday.

Avery Johnson reportedly will seek a long-term deal to coach the Pistons, as it's clear they're in a rebuilding phase.

Johnson is said to be looking for a contract similar to the four-year, $18 million deal former-Pistons coach Flip Saunders signed with the Wizards last month. This could cause a road block for Johnson to coach the Pistons, but he is still the No. 1 candidate at this point.

The Spurs retired the No. 6 worn by former Spurs guard Avery Johnson on Saturday night.

The Little General spent parts of 10 seasons with the Spurs during his 16-year career and was part of the 1999 championship team. His 18-foot jumper with 47 seconds to play in Game 5 against the Knicks was the final basket of the game, leading to their first title. "Thank you for allowing me to do it," Johnson said. "And no matter where I go or what I do, No. 6, I'll still be hanging right there."

Avery Johnson will be in San Antonio on Saturday night, but it isn't because his Mavericks are playing the Spurs; Johnson's number 6 jersey is being retired by the Spurs.

Johnson is an odds-on favorite to launch into some motivational talk, compliments of his recent book, "Aspire Higher". It's a great honor, though, and should be a nice night for both AJ and the Spurs.

Coach Avery Johnson was fined $25,000 Monday for his actions during a game against the Indiana Pacers last week.

Avery Johnson is reportedly looking forward to coaching the Mavericks during the remaining three seasons of his contract, and supposed tension between him and owner Mark Cuban has been exaggerated, a source close to the team said Sunday.

Johnson is set to make just $2.5 million next season and there was speculation that he would be unhappy unless his current deal was restructured. However, Johnson has every intention of honoring the deal, and the source reiterated that Cuban and Johnson remain friends and have no problems.

Avery Johnson's press conference after Game 5 was riddled with insinuations about the officiating of the game.

He refused to say anything directly about the officiating, but was clearly under the belief that the officials cost his team twice. The first time was the foul call on Dirk Nowitzki, as Johnson demanded that a Dallas Morning News beat writer tell the room his version of what he saw. The reporter refused and the topic was eventually changed to the Josh Howard timeout. Johnson insinuated that Howard was verifying with the bench when to call the timeout and that the officials charged him with it at that point. Johnson did a good job of avoiding direct comments on the officiating, but it was obvious that he was furious with the officials.

Avery Johnson's comments regarding Jerry Stackhouse's suspension may result in a fine.

Johnson's comments on ESPN radio were very outspoken and derogatory toward the league, and while he probably won't be suspended, a large fine is almost a certainty.

A Phoenix Suns fan who got into a fight with the wife of Avery Johnson in Game 4 of the Western Conference finals is no longer pursuing charges.

Rebecca Kettle filed a criminal assault complaint against Cassandra Johnson, saying she was hit on the shoulder during a verbal confrontation May 30. She and her boyfriend, Jose Martinez, said in a statement Friday that they were dropping the case. The Suns have apparently enticed the couple to drop the suit. In exchange, they get free playoff tickets next season.

Two Phoenix Suns season-ticket holders said they filed a misdemeanor assault complaint against Cassandra Johnson, the wife of Mavericks coach Avery Johnson, on Tuesday.

Ron Duranti, who was seated behind Johnson, said she "took at least three swings at the woman." Duranti said the swings missed and she ended up making contact with a man. "Some lady was getting pissed off because we were cheering for the Suns," fan Jose Martinez said. "She's dropping [expletives] and her two kids are crying."

As expected, Avery Johnson was named the NBA's coach of the year on Tuesday.

The "Little General's" career record is 76-24 since taking over for Don Nelson last year. The Suns' Mike D'Antoni was the runner-up, but it wasn't even close.

Numerous sources said Monday that Avery Johnson will be honored with the league's coach of the year sometime on Tuesday.

Johnson won the nationwide ballot of media members, besting Detroit's Flip Saunders, San Antonio's Gregg Popovich and Phoenix's Mike D'Antoni. His career record is 76-24 since taking over for Don Nelson last season. "He got a great opportunity, and he's a great coach who took that opportunity and ran with it," Nelson said.
