New Lakers head coach Luke Walton hinted that his team will target some veterans in free agency.
"You need some vets for sure; some leadership on the court," Walton said. "Even if it’s vets that aren’t playing big minutes, as a coaching staff it’s our job to hold them accountable. As a player, you learn just as much if not more from the vets on your team when you’re young and trying to find your way on how to do things the right way and how to work and what should be done on long road trips to take care of yourself — and all these things. A lot of that comes from veteran leadership. I think that we will be searching out some guys like that. Obviously with the cap space we have, we’ll be searching out some All-Star caliber players as well. You kind of try to make a nice mixture of all that." Jun 27 - 1:12 PM

Luke Walton stated during his introductory press conference that the Lakers will play "an uptempo game."

Walton also said that he wants to give his players more "freedom," and he wants to create an environment where his guys are "happy to come to work and practice," so he more or less is striving to be the exact opposite of Byron Scott. Walton will likely be incorporating a lot of the things he learned in Golden State, going with an uptempo and free flowing offense, which is good news for guys like Jordan Clarkson and D'Angelo Russell.

Coach Luke Walton said he'll be focusing on the offensive side and will bring in a defensive coach to his staff.

He's really going to try to incorporate the Warriors-style offense to his new team. The problem is the Lakers personnel isn't quite as strong as Golden State. The new offense should help out guys like D'Angelo Russell.

Luke Walton is expected to receive a five-year contract worth approximately $25 million to become the Lakers head coach.

Coach Luke Walton said he will not run the triangle offense next season.

He said the triangle is not the "most appropriate" offense for the players on the roster. Walton will likely try to incorporate more movement and spacing, which could bode well for D'Angelo Russell.
Apr 30 - 4:28 PM

The Lakers hired Luke Walton as their head coach on a multi-year contract.

Well, this helps explain why the Lakers dumped Byron Scott so late. Walton went 39-4 this season, including an NBA record 24-0 start. He was on the 2009 and 2010 Lakers title teams and is a 10-year vet. Walton will finish this season as the assistant to Steve Kerr before he takes over with his new team. This is a marvelous start for the Lakers after a couple down seasons to get the hottest coaching candidate out there. The next big day for the Lakers will be on lottery day because their draft pick is top-three protected (55 percent chance to keep).

Luke Walton told reporters that he was brought on to Steve Kerr's staff to help implement the triangle offense.

"We are gonna run parts of the triangle offense," said Walton. "And I know that thing front and back so he’s counting on me to be able to help out a lot in that area." Walton spent most of his career on the Lakers running Phil Jackson's triangle offense, and he will now help educate the Warriors, alongside Kerr, on how to properly run that system.

Luke Walton isn't ready to announce his retirement from the NBA.

"I want to play still," Walton said. "I've trained all summer as if I was going to get a call. The call never came ... If nothing happens this year, then I'll probably admit that it's officially over." Walton had solid 3-point range and admirable versatility in his prime, but injuries have taken a heavy toll throughout his 10-year career. He recently explored a player development job in the D-League and he's dabbled in announcing games for the Lakers.
