Free agent Ike Hilliard, released by Tampa Bay on Wednesday, plans to continue his playing career.

Hilliard would have a lot better shot at latching on if Jon Gruden was still in coaching. The 33-year-old might get a tryout in someone's camp for cheap.

Bucs released WR Ike Hilliard.

The Gruden (and Rotoworld) favorite is as smart and tough as anyone, but his 9.0 yards-per-catch average was too low to keep. Hilliard averaged 55 grabs the last two seasons, but the Bucs will smartly go young at the position. Hilliard, 33, will struggle to find a gig elsewhere.

Ike Hilliard (head) practiced Wednesday and coach Jon Gruden expects him to play Sunday despite nagging headaches.

"He's going to play, knowing Ike," Gruden said. "He's special; he's really special." Even if Hilliard is a go, he shouldn't be counted on in fantasy leagues. He's behind Antonio Bryant, Joey Galloway, and Michael Clayton.

The St. Petersburg Times reports the hit that knocked WR Ike Hilliard unconscious Oct. 19 could force him to miss some games and threaten to end his season.

Hilliard hasn't missed a game since the hit, but he's still experiencing headaches and his condition has not improved. The veteran is also worried that surgery might be required. For now, though, he is going to rehab the injury and is expected to miss Sunday's game.

As lovable a character as he is, Hilliard's upside for Week 9 against the Chiefs is about four catches for 40 yards as a rotating third/fourth receiver.
