Deuce McAllister officially announced his retirement from football Tuesday.
McAllister is said to be 30 pounds over his playing weight, and he admits that another knee surgery would likely be required to play again. The Saints can no longer afford to use a roster spot on Deuce with Robert Meachem (ankle) questionable for this week's game against the Vikings. The local hero will continue to serve as honorary captain Sunday. He retires as the Saints all-time leading rusher and touchdown scorer. Tue, Jan 19, 2010 04:09:00 PM

Saints coach Sean Payton revealed that Deuce McAllister is 28 pounds over his usual playing weight.

McAllister, signed last week for "leadership" reasons, may weigh around 260 because his listed weight is 232. The 31-year-old figures to lead the team onto the field again Sunday versus Minnesota, but won't play this postseason.

Saints declared RB Deuce McAllister, QB Chase Daniels, OG Jamar Nesbit, S Chris Reis, LB Anthony Waters, TE Darnell Dinkins, TE Tory Humphrey, and DE Paul Spicer active for Saturday's Divisional Round playoff game against the Cardinals.

Crowd favorite and local hero McAllister will serve as team captain, but he won't suit up. TEs Jeremy Shockey (toe) and David Thomas (calf) are both active. Pierre Thomas (ribs) is close to 100 percent and is expected to regain feature back duties. CBs Jabari Greer (sports hernia surgery), Tracy Porter (knee), and Randall Gay (hamstring) are all healthy.

Saints coach Sean Payton confirmed Friday that Deuce McAllister will be inactive for the team's Divisional Round playoff game.

McAllister will lead the team onto the field and serve as captain, but it sounds like he was only signed to get the Superdome crowd roaring. It will probably work. McAllister, the club's all-time rushing leader, is still hailed as a hero on New Orleans. Officially, though, he's No. 5 on the depth chart.

Saints re-signed RB Deuce McAllister.

The move may have something to do with either Pierre Thomas' cracked ribs or Mike Bell's severe decline in production down the stretch. McAllister, 31, was out of the league all year after serving a four-game suspension to open the season for taking a diuretic (StarCaps) banned by the NFL. He'll be a mere insurance policy, and is very unlikely to see any touches in the playoffs.

According to Saints beat reporter Jeff Duncan, free agent Deuce McAllister is training in hopes of playing in the NFL in 2010.

McAllister, who turned 31 last month, was out of the league in 2009, drawing no interest after his four-game StarCaps suspension was up. Perhaps the ultra-thin free agent tailback market will help him get a look this offseason.

Free agent RB Deuce McAllister says he is healthy enough to pass a physical right now and his agents have been in contact with some teams.

The problem is McAllister is suspended for the first four games of the season after testing positive for a banned diuretic last summer. He'll probably have to wait until after those four weeks to get a real look.

Free agent Deuce McAllister suggested to a St. Louis radio station that he'd like to play for the Rams.

The Rams certainly need help behind Steven Jackson after coming out of the draft with only seventh-rounder Chris Ogbonnaya, but Deuce is suspended to open the season. When eligible, McAllister can still be a short-yardage asset.

Free agent Deuce McAllister is "distraught" over news that he'll be suspended four games to open the season and plans to appeal.

McAllister's chances of signing with a team took a huge hit when his ban was upheld. "They knew they were wrong. They thought they were beat," he said of the NFL. Deuce probably won't get a contract before midseason.

Free agent Deuce McAllister said he wants to play for "a couple of more years."

McAllister is working out five hours a day at an institute run by Dr. James Andrews. He hopes to start visiting teams in a few weeks, but he also has a possible four-game suspension hanging over his head. Deuce may get a tryout, but he'll have an uphill battle to make a final roster as a short-yardage back.

Free agent Deuce McAllister says he definitely plans to keep playing and will begin working out for NFL teams soon.

McAllister, who is working out at Duke University, says his surgically repaired knees feel fine and claims he's spoken to 10-12 teams. "There's definitely some interest there," he added. "The plan is to be able to work out for NFL teams prior to the NFL draft. I've just got to show them I can still play."

Free agent Deuce McAllister filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection for a Nissan dealership he owns in Mississippi.

According to Nissan, McAllister's dealership owes more than $6.6M on a financing deal that exceeded the credit line. Deuce is still rehabbing from arthroscopic surgery on his left knee that cleared up scar tissue and cartilage.

Free agent Deuce McAllister had his left knee scoped six weeks ago.

This won't help him find a new home. Deuce had microfracture surgery on the same knee last offseason and has now had four knee operations in the last four years. He admits he couldn't pass a physical for any team right now.

Saints released RB Deuce McAllister.

The writing has been on the wall for a couple of months now, with a $7.3 million cap charge and a $3.2 million salary. At age 30 with two damaged knees, Deuce's future is bleak. He may hope to catch on with a contender, but few NFL teams reserve roster spots for short-yardage backs who don't contribute on special teams. Pierre Thomas was already a player on the rise, but this news solidifies his value as an intriguing RB2 for 2009.

Deuce McAllister will likely be the next player released by the Saints.

David Patten was the first to be cut. Other potential cap casualties are CB Mike McKenzie, G Jamar Nesbit, and DTs Brian Young and Hollis Thomas.
