Ty Montgomery rushed five times for 31 yards and caught 1-of-2 targets for nine yards in the Packers' Week 2 tie with the Vikings.
It was an improvement on the four touches Montgomery saw in Week 1, but he still has been mostly uninvolved through two weeks. More worryingly, Aaron Jones is due back from suspension in Week 3. Montgomery is not a must-roster player in standard scoring. Sep 16 - 5:36 PM

Date:

Ty Montgomery rushed two times for seven yards and caught 2-of-3 passes for 21 yards in Week 1 against Chicago.

Montgomery played close to the same amount of snaps as Jamaal Williams but saw 11 fewer touches. He wasn't higher than the No. 5 pass game option, with Geronimo Allison out targeting him. Montgomery could have some big weeks when the Packers are playing from behind, but he's hard to trust as a weekly fantasy option.

Packers coach Mike McCarthy said Ty Montgomery's foot injury is "nothing of a serious nature."

Montgomery started Friday's preseason game with Brett Hundley and the rest of the second-team offense but was forced to exit early. Assuming he's healthy to start the year, he's the clear-cut No. 2 behind starter Jamaal Williams. Aaron Jones will likely push for more carries following his initial two-game suspension to begin the season, but Montgomery will continue to be utilized as the club's third-down back.

Ty Montgomery exited Friday's preseason game versus the Raiders with a foot injury.

Montgomery received reps to start the game with Brett Hundley and the Packers' second-team offense Friday but headed to the locker room early with a foot injury. His status at this time is unknown. Montgomery is projected to open the season as Green Bay's No. 2 back behind Jamaal Williams, but the pending severity of his injury could open the door for Devante Mays or preseason standout Joel Bouagnon to make the team. Aaron Jones will likely compete with Williams to start once he returns from suspension in Week 3.

ESPN's Rob Demovsky writes Ty Montgomery has worked as the third-down back early in training camp.

According to Demovsky, Jamaal Williams has handled the majority of the "normal down-and-distance situations" while Montgomery has been in during "two-minute and no-huddle drives." Aaron Jones, who is currently sidelined by a hamstring injury and will serve a two-game suspension to start the season, should push Williams for the early-down work, but the passing-down job should be Montgomery's as long as he can stay healthy, making him a solid pick at his ninth-round ADP.

ESPN's Rob Demovsky writes Ty Montgomery appears set for a "significant role in the offense."

Demovsky added Montgomery "didn't appear to lose any ground" to Jamaal Williams and Aaron Jones during OTAs. "We have to take advantage of Ty's skills, and there's no question about that," coach Mike McCarthy said. "The offense is suited for that." While it still seems more likely Williams or Jones wins the early-down role, Montgomery is clearly not going away. He could end up being a value in the double-digit rounds.

Jun 11 - 9:36 AM

Packers coach Mike McCarthy said people will "see a bigger, stronger Ty Montgomery this year."

Montgomery stuck around in Green Bay over the offseason to work with Packers strength and conditioning coordinator Mark Lovat in hopes of improving his durability. "I know that I can be a really good football player; I just need to stay healthy," Montgomery said. "I’m looking forward to getting one full healthy season under my belt." Unlikely to get true lead-back workloads with Jamaal Williams and Aaron Jones also vying for touches, Montgomery should have a better shot to stay healthy this season, but that competition also makes him much less interesting from a fantasy perspective.

Packers coach Mike McCarthy suggested Ty Montgomery could become more of a "hybrid" receiver-running back in 2018.

Drafted to play receiver out of Stanford in 2015, Montgomery instead spent most of the last two seasons at running back. Aaron Jones and Jamaal Williams showed more as runners last season, however, so Montgomery's role seems likely to be tweaked. If the Packers release Randall Cobb, we'd be interested to see if Montgomery would be given an opportunity to earn snaps at slot receiver.
Feb 28 - 7:32 PM

ESPN Packers reporter Rob Demovsky believes the time might be right for Green Bay to move Ty Montgomery back to wide receiver.

Montgomery was an every-down running back the first three weeks of last season, but the injuries started kicking in soon after. 41 of his 71 carries came in Weeks 1-3 before suffering a wrist injury five snaps into Week 4. He then sustained broken ribs just a couple weeks later. Montgomery was eventually placed on I.R. after carrying the ball just 14 times Weeks 8-10. His body simply didn't hold up in the backfield, and the Packers have Jamaal Williams and Aaron Jones as better options. At receiver, Montgomery could replace Randall Cobb in the slot.

Ty Montgomery will undergo wrist surgery.

Montgomery first injured his wrist in Week 4. He played through it, but it wasn’t getting any better. Montgomery will get surgery now that he’s on IR. He should be ready for OTAs.

Packers placed RB Ty Montgomery (wrist) on injured reserve, ending his season.

Montgomery had been dealing with fractured ribs for most of the year but his wrist injury sent him to IR. It ends an ineffective first full season at running back for Montgomery, who averaged just 3.8 YPC. Montgomery likely won't have more than a pass-down role in 2018.

Ty Montgomery (ribs) is out for Week 13 against the Buccaneers.

Kevin King (shoulder) has also been ruled out. This marks Montgomery's third straight absence. The early rule-out suggests Montgomery was never close to playing, casting doubt on his status for Week 14. Aaron Jones (knee) resumed practicing on Thursday and would likely work in a committee with Jamaal Williams if he plays this week.

Ty Montgomery (ribs) remained sidelined at Thursday's practice.

Montgomery has made little progress in his recovery from a rib injury and could be headed for another absence Sunday against Tampa Bay. Jamaal Williams has handled most of the Packers' backfield work recently, though Aaron Jones (knee) could be back this week after returning to practice on Thursday.

Ty Montgomery (ribs) is not practicing Wednesday.

Aaron Jones (knee) is also not practicing Wednesday, though both players were on the field working with the rehab group. Coach Mike McCarthy said there's still a chance both practice this week. For now, Jamaal Williams remains atop the depth chart and a volume-based RB2 play against the Bucs.
Wed, Nov 29, 2017 01:02:00 PM

Ty Montgomery (ribs) is doubtful for Week 12 against the Steelers.

Montgomery didn't practice all week and barring a miraculous comeback, will not play Sunday night at Pittsburgh. With Aaron Jones (knee) also on the shelf, Jamaal Williams will draw another start for Green Bay. Williams has logged 20-plus touches in each of his last two games, though he's averaged a disappointing 3.26 yards per carry over that span. He'll be on the RB2/3 borderline for Week 12.
