Colts activated S Clayton Geathers (neck) from the reserve/PUP list.
LB Josh Perry has been waived in a corresponding roster move. Geathers had been recovering from surgery to repair a bulging disc in his neck since last December. Colts coach Chuck Pagano said SS Clayton Geathers (neck, PUP) will resume practicing next week.

Geathers has been on the shelf since suffering a neck injury last December. Pagano said he'll be limited to non-contact work initially. The Colts will have three weeks to activate Geathers from the PUP list once he resumes practicing.
Oct 20 - 1:29 PM

Colts SS Clayton Geathers (neck, PUP) will begin practicing within "a week maybe two weeks."

"He's getting closer," coach Chuck Pagano said. Geathers has been sidelined since injuring his neck last December and requiring surgery for a bulging disc. Geathers is an impact box safety, particularly against the run. First-round rookie Malik Hooker has free safety locked down, while second-year UDFA SS Matthias Farley has played reasonably well. Geathers could play linebacker.
Oct 10 - 9:16 PM

Colts SS Clayton Geathers (neck) will begin the season on the reserve/PUP list, missing at least six games.

Geathers underwent "last resort" offseason surgery, and is without a timetable for a return. It's within the realm of possibility that he could miss the entire 2017 season. He'll be a big absence, as Geathers played 558 play-making snaps when healthy last season. Darius Butler and first-rounder Malik Hooker are penciled in as the Colts' starting safeties.
Jul 24 - 1:15 PM

Colts SS Clayton Geathers (neck) is uncertain for Week 1.

It was revealed last week that Geathers underwent neck surgery, but the nature of it wasn't clear. We now know Geathers was dealing with a bulging disc in his neck that required a "last resort" surgery. "I believe in a higher power, and I just pray about it," Geathers said. "Everything will work out." Neck issues are never a certainty to heal, so this is definitely a big concern for the Colts. Geathers was one of the few bright spots on Indy's defense last year as a big-hitting maven against the run. 2016 second-rounder T.J. Green and first-round rookie Malik Hooker opened OTAs as the Colts' starting safeties.
May 23 - 8:58 PM

Colts SS Clayton Geathers is recovering from offseason neck surgery.

Geathers was placed on I.R. in December following a concussion and neck issue. The latter required some sort of operation, though details are scarce. The Colts say Geathers remains without a timetable for recovery. A hybrid safety-linebacker who plays in the box, we have no reason to believe Geathers won't be ready for training camp. He could play even more linebacker in 2017.
May 16 - 9:04 PM

Kevin Bowen of Colts.com suggested Indianapolis could move S Clayton Geathers to linebacker.

DC Ted Monachino seemed intrigued by the idea when asked about it during the season. "That’s an excellent question," Monachino said. "We have to find ways to continue to keep him going and being productive because he has the ability to make a bunch of plays." Geathers is a 220-pound missile who has been a solid run defender from the safety position, but durability could be a concern at linebacker after he was limited to nine games by a neck injury. For what it is worth, the Colts have needs at both linebacker and safety.

Colts placed FS Clayton Geathers (neck) on injured reserve, ending his season.

One of the Colts' few promising prospects, Geathers was wracked by a multitude of injuries in his first season as a full-time safety and most recently suffered a concussion followed by a neck injury. Geathers is signed through 2018.

Colts FS Clayton Geathers (neck) is out for Week 13 against the Jets.

Clayton Geathers (concussion) participated in Monday's practice.

Geathers was in a non-contact jersey, but the practice suggests he is in the final stages of the concussion protocol. He should be cleared in time to face the Jets on Monday night. Geathers' return will be a boost for Indy's run defense.

Colts FS Clayton Geathers (concussion) has been ruled out for Week 12 against the Steelers.

He's in the same boat as Andrew Luck. Four days wasn't enough to pass the protocol. Look for rookie T.J. Green to start in his place. Geathers is one of PFF's top safeties in run support, providing a boost to Le'Veon Bell.

Colts FS Clayton Geathers is in the league's concussion protocol.

Geathers joins teammate Andrew Luck there, and both are questionable bordering doubtful for Thursday night's Thanksgiving showdown with the Steelers. Geathers has been lights out in run support for the Colts.

Colts SS Clayton Geathers (foot) is expected to resume practicing on Wednesday.

It's badly-needed news for the Colts, as fill-in T.J. Green injured his MCL in Sunday's loss. It doesn't mean Geathers is guaranteed to return, of course, but it does put him on track to suit up against the Broncos.

Colts activated SS Clayton Geathers (foot) from the active/PUP list.

Geathers missed most of camp recovering from offseason foot surgery. His Week 1 status is uncertain. The Colts' starters at safety to begin the season will be Mike Adams and rookie T.J. Green.
Sat, Sep 3, 2016 06:41:00 PM

Colts coach Chuck Pagano said SS Clayton Geathers (broken foot, active/PUP) is still very limited.

It is unlikely Geathers opens the season on the reserve/PUP, but it does not sound like he will be ready for Week 1. Once the heavy favorite to replace Dwight Lowery at strong safety, Geathers might now open the season behind second-rounder T.J. Green on the depth chart.
