The Saints are expected to hire John Carney as a full-time coach or consultant for the 2011 season.
Carney worked as an unofficial consultant with the Saints last season when he was still hoping to land one final shot at a kicking gig. Turning 47 next month, he's ready to make the "natural" transition into coaching K Garrett Hartley and P Thomas Morstead. Carney will end his 22-year career third on the all-time list with 2,062 points scored. Thu, Mar 3, 2011 07:38:00 PM

Saints released K John Carney.

The 46-year-old was signed to be a more reliable option on short field goals. After he missed a 29-yard chippie at Arizona, the Saints decided he wasn't worth the roster spot. They'll turn back to Garrett Hartley on field goals.

John Carney is active as the Saints kicker in Week 5, as expected.

Carney's limit is about 43 yards, but he's a solid K1 against a leaky Cardinals defense.

John Carney is expected to be the Saints' field-goal and extra-point kicker again in Week 5.

Carney nailed all three of his field goal attempts and a PAT in Week 4. Coach Sean Payton said it's "unlikely" that the Saints would activate Garrett Hartley for kickoff and long field goal duties. Payton does not plan to use Carney to kick field goals from any longer than 43 yards out.

Coach Sean Payton said that K John Carney is comfortable from 43 yards and in.

Carney went 3-for-3 in his 2010 debut on Sunday while Garrett Hartley was deactivated. Payton has made it clear that Hartley will get his job back at some point, but it's uncertain when that will be. Carney's weak leg caps his upside, but he is a fantasy option in the Saints' high-powered offense.

John Carney is the Saints' kicker Sunday, as expected.

Garrett Hartley is inactive. The plan is to let Carney kick and tutor Hartley until the youngster gets his head back on straight. Carney is a fine fantasy option despite his weak leg.

The Saints are planning to use John Carney as their field-goal kicker this week, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Coach Sean Payton has been noncommital, indicating that he'll make a final decision on Sunday. It's hard to picture Payton turning back to Garrett Hartley against the Panthers after bringing back the veteran. Feel free to pencil in Carney but check back on Sunday just to be sure.

Coach Sean Payton said Wednesday that the Saints have not decided on a field goal kicker for Week 4.

Payton said the position will be "evaluated through the week," despite Tuesday's signing of John Carney. Virtually all signs point to Carney getting the nod against Carolina, but he'll be on an extremely short leash. Payton promises that he still believes in Garrett Hartley, and keeping Hartley on the roster as a potential game-day inactive confirms it.

Saints re-signed K John Carney.

Carney had been working in a consulting role with the Saints since losing his job to Garrett Hartley last year. The 46-year-old is a more reliable option at the moment while Hartley works though his case of the yips. Carney is worthy of a waiver addition in the Saints' high-powered offense.

Free agent Matt Stover told the Baltimore Sun Monday that he expects the Saints to sign free agent John Carney.

Stover was believed to be on the Saints' radar initially, but wasn't asked in for a tryout. The 46-year-old Carney has a history with Saints coach Sean Payton and would immediately jump to fantasy starter status if signed.

John Carney was signed to a kicking consultant role for the Saints just days after being released.

The 21-year vet will offer pointers to Garrett Hartley. The consultant position means Carney won't be allowed to kick for the Saints or any other team for the rest of the season. Hartley's job is safe, as is Shaun Suisham's in Dallas.

Saints released K John Carney.

Carney's departure was a fait accompli after he was replaced by Hartley three weeks ago. The Saints weren't going to use two roster spots on kickers during the playoffs, and Hartley has been the more reliable option. Carney could draw interest in Dallas if Shaun Suisham falters.

Saints declared K John Carney, WR Lance Moore, DB Randall Gay, DB Tracy Porter, DB Jabari Greer, LB Marvin Mitchell, LB Scott Fujita and OL Jamar Nesbit inactive for Week 13 against the Redskins.

Carney has lost his job to Garrett Hartley, who will kick against Washington.

John Carney has lost his kicking job to Garrett Hartley.

Fantasy owners in deep leagues can hang onto him in case Garrett Hartley struggles, but he should be dropped in 12-team redraft leagues. The 45-year-old Carney has been shaky of late, missing five kicks in the last six weeks.

John Carney is still the Saints kicker despite looking very shaky Monday night.

Carney missed a 37-yard attempt and hit the upright on a 30-yard try. He also struggled on extra points, pushing a few of them very close to the right upright. Garrett Hartley remains waiting in the wings and a move could be made if Carney struggles again this week.
