Jets waived WR Laveranues Coles.
Coles was signed with the intention of providing an emotional boost after Jim Leonhard went down with a season-ending injury. That didn't work out so well for the Jets. Tue, Dec 7, 2010 02:42:00 PM

Jets signed WR Laveranues Coles.

As expected. Coles will take Jim Leonhard's roster spot, but is unlikely to stick around for more than a week or two. He's expected to provide insurance for Jerricho Cotchery (groin) before retiring as a Jet.

The Jets plan to re-sign free agent WR Laveranues Coles on Sunday according to beat writer Manish Mehta.

Coles will take the roster spot of Jim Leonhard, who was placed on injured reserve early Saturday. The veteran wide receiver is only expected to be with the team for a week or two. Needless to say, he's not a fantasy option.

Coach Rex Ryan suggested Tuesday that free agent Laveranues Coles could be brought back to help the Jets' passing game.

If Ryan thought Coles could really cure what ails Mark Sanchez, the veteran would have been on the roster in the first place. If Coles is re-signed, it's because the Jets won't have to guarantee his salary now that the first game is in the books.

Free agent Laveranues Coles admitted Sunday that his career is likely over.

"I think I'm done," said the 32-year-old. "I don't want to become one of those journeyman football players. I don't need the money." Coles ranks fourth in Jets franchise history in receptions and fifth in receiving yardage.

Jets coach Rex Ryan didn't rule out the possibility Sunday that the team might re-sign free agent Laveranues Coles.

Ryan called Coles' return a "definite possibility." The Jets would have had to guarantee Coles' roughly $800K salary by keeping him on the Week 1 roster, so it's possible that his release was procedural. Still, he's not going to help the team on the field. By all accounts, Coles' tank is on E.

Jets released WR Laveranues Coles, WR Marcus Henry, WR Aundrae Allison, and DE Rodrique Wright.

Coles finished the preseason with four catches for 19 yards, running with the second- and third-team offense. The 11th-year veteran promised his latest stint with the Jets would be his "last hurrah" as an NFL player, so it would not be surprising if he retired. In fact, it may be the best decision for everyone, as Coles has nothing left. Henry, Allison, and Wright all have been underachievers in the NFL after sparkling college careers.

Laveranues Coles acknowledged that he is not getting any reps with the Jets' first-team offense in camp.

Coles doesn't even expect to play in the third preseason game, when the first unit sees its most extensive action of the exhibition season. Coles, 32, has lost so much ability that we're not sure he'll even make the roster.

Coach Rex Ryan said that Laveranues Coles might be cut after Santonio Holmes returns from his four-game suspension.

The primary reason Coles was signed was to fill in for Holmes, so depending on how he does, he might last only four games with the team. Ryan said of Coles, vaguely that "he could get cut and he could make the Pro Bowl.'' He's not going to help your fantasy team no matter how long he's around.

Laveranues Coles suggested Monday that this is his final season and he will retire as a Jet.

Coles said he was set to walk through the doors and sign a one-day deal with the Jets if they didn't call with an offer. He can see the writing on the wall after an offseason of zero interest in his services. The 32-year-old had little left in the tank with the Bengals last season.

Jets re-signed WR Laveraneus Coles.

Now 32, Coles has lost most of his speed and short-area quickness, and he was a free agent mega-flop in Cincinnati last season. Coles told ESPN New York's Rich Cimini that he'll probably last on the roster four or so games. At that point, Santonio Holmes is due back from suspension. Coles won't come close to the fantasy radar, in case you were wondering. You probably weren't.

Free agent Laveranues Coles is expected to be signed after working out for the Jets on Friday, according to ESPNNewYork.com's Rich Cimini.

The Jets apparently have little confidence in David Clowney or Brad Smith to function as the No. 3 receiver while Santonio Holmes is suspended for the first month of the season. Coles showed last season that he has little left in the tank, but he's familiar with Brian Schottenheimer's offense and should be fine in the slot for four games. Needless to say, he offers zero fantasy value.

A potential Jets re-signing of free agent Laveranues Coles may not occur until training camp.

The sides have kept an "open dialogue," but Coles may still be trying to land a job that would put him higher than No. 4 on the depth chart. Unfortunately, he was met by nothing but the sound of chirping crickets when the Bengals released him in early March.

The Jets have reportedly been in contact with the player rep for free agent Laveranues Coles.

The sides remain in the talking stage, and no deal is imminent. Coles could handle third receiver duties while Santonio Holmes serves his four-game suspension, but he'd be bench fodder for the remainder of the season.

Free agent Laveranues Coles will not be back with the Jets now that Santonio Holmes is in the fold, according to Rich Cimini of the New York Daily News.

Coles was linked to the Jets after he was cut by the Bengals, but he's falling off the cliff and serves no purpose as a fourth or fifth wideout. He'll likely have to wait until after the draft to get some nibbles.
