Titans hired Mike Vrabel as head coach.
A Pro Bowl linebacker as recently as 2007, Vrabel climbed the coaching ranks quickly, pitstopping for three years at Ohio State before spending 2014-2016 as the Texans' linebackers coach, then succeeding Romeo Crennel as Texans defensive coordinator in 2017. Albeit in large part due to unfortunate injuries, Vrabel's 2017 Texans defense was a bottom-ten unit, particularly struggling against the pass. Arguably more important than Vrabel's hire will be whomever he chooses to run Tennessee's offense. The development of 24-year-old Marcus Mariota will have the biggest impact on the direction of the Titans' organization. Jan 20 - 6:01 PM

The Tennessean considers Texans DC Mike Vrabel the "early favorite" for the Titans' head-coaching job.

Vrabel was the first candidate to interview with Tennessee this week. The Titans also met with Panthers DC Steve Wilks and Rams OC Matt LaFleur, but neither are expected to get the job. Vrabel has ties to GM Jon Robinson from his New England days and fits what Tennessee is looking for as a coach on the rise. Despite a rough first year as a coordinator, Vrabel looks ready to make the jump to the head-coaching ranks.

The Titans conducted their head-coaching interview with Texans DC Mike Vrabel on Thursday.

Vrabel previously interviewed with the Lions and Colts, though both teams appear to have already made their decision (Matt Patricia in Detroit, Josh McDaniels in Indy). The Titans have also been connected to Eagles OC Frank Reich, Rams OC Matt LaFleur and Panthers DC Steve Wilks.

The Houston Chronicle's John McClain reports the Titans will interview Texans DC Mike Vrabel for their head coaching vacancy.

Vrabel has also interviewed with the Lions and Colts, and he is thought to be a finalist for the Colts' job along with Patriots OC Josh McDaniels, with whom the Titans have also been linked. Vrabel's defense had a rough season in 2017, but that has not slowed down his march to a head coaching job. Even if it is not this cycle, he should land one in the next couple years.

Texans DC Mike Vrabel will interview with the Colts on Saturday.

He'll be the second candidate to interview after the Colts met with Patriots OC Josh McDaniels. Vrabel had a rough first year as Houston's defensive coordinator, but he's one of the hotter names this offseason. A favorite has yet to emerge in the Colts' search to replace Chuck Pagano.

MMQB's Albert Breer reports Texans DC Mike Vrabel will interview for the Lions' head coaching job Wednesday.

He also looks set to interview for the Colts' opening at some point. Vrabel's defense struggled in his first year as a coordinator, but the Texans were plagued by injuries on that side of the ball. Even if it does not happen this year, Vrabel is on the fast track to a head coaching job.

The Colts have been granted permission to interview Texans DC Mike Vrabel for their head coaching vacancy.

Vrabel was promoted from linebackers coach to defensive coordinator before the 2017 season. His defense was absolutely wretched across the board, but Vrabel has been given a pass due to numerous personnel injuries. What matters most to NFL decision makers is the perception of Vrabel, and he is highly regarded in league circles. He is also getting interest for the Lions' coaching vacancy.

MMQB's Albert Breer reports the Lions have requested permission to interview Texans DC Mike Vrabel.

It is another former Patriot linked with the Lions to go along with current Patriots DC Matt Patricia -- GM Bob Quinn spent 16 years in New England. Houston's defense took a step back under Vrabel this season, his first as coordinator, but he can lay at least some of the blame on injuries. A hot coaching prospect, it seems like just a matter of time before Vrabel lands a lead job.

MMQB's Albert Breer reports the Texans are promoting LBs coach Mike Vrabel to defensive coordinator.

Current DC Romeo Crennel's contract is expiring, but he's expected to return as the assistant head coach, according to Breer. Houston didn't want to lose either coach, and Vrabel had been linked to the 49ers' defensive-coordinator opening once Falcons OC Kyle Shanahan accepts the head-coaching job. Vrabel's star has been getting brighter the past couple years. He was connected to the Rams' head-coaching job last week but never formally interviewed for it.

MMQB's Albert Breer reports Texans LBs coach Mike Vrabel will interview for the Rams' head-coaching vacancy.

Vrabel is just 41 years old and played 14 seasons in the league, mostly with the Patriots under coach Bill Belichick. He got into coaching in 2011 as the LBs coach at Ohio State, where he coached for three seasons before joining the Texans in 2014 as an assistant under DC Romeo Crennel. It would be an out-of-the-box hire for the Rams, but they're leaving no stone unturned in their search.

CSN Bay Area's John Middlekauff reports Texans LBs coach Mike Vrabel has turned down the 49ers' defensive coordinator vacancy.

It's an embarrassment for Chip Kelly. The Texans weren't even required to let Vrabel interview, but did so in good faith. We'd imagine Vrabel, who is a rising coaching star, decided Kelly's brand of football was too risky for his first coordinating job. Kelly's defenses spend huge amounts of time on the field, wearing out players and jacking up statistics. 2016 will be Vrabel's third season as Bill O'Brien's linebackers coach.

The 49ers have offered Mike Vrabel the defensive coordinator job, according to ESPN's Dianna Marie Russini.

At this point, the Niners are just waiting for him to say yes or no. The ex-Patriot has spent the last two years as the Texans' linebackers coach. If Vrabel joins Chip Kelly in San Francisco, it would leave Eric Mangini out of a job.

49ers will interview Texans LBs coach Mike Vrabel for their open defensive coordinator position.

Reports surfaced Monday saying there was a "strong possibility" current DC Eric Mangini would be retained, but San Francisco is apparently still looking at other options. A First-Team All-Pro and three-time Super Bowl champ as a linebacker with the Patriots, Vrabel has been the LBs coach in Houston since 2014. With just two seasons of position coach experience in the NFL, hiring Vrabel as coordinator would be a shocking move.

Texans hired Mike Vrabel as linebackers coach.

We don't typically post position-coach hires, but this one piqued our interest with Vrabel being a recent former player. Vrabel played linebacker for the Patriots when new Texans coach Bill O'Brien was on the staff in New England. Vrabel recently coached LBs at his alma mater, Ohio State.
Fri, Jan 10, 2014 09:18:00 AM

Free agent Mike Vrabel has officially announced his retirement from the NFL after 14 seasons.

As has been rumored for nearly a week, he will become the linebackers coach at his alma mater Ohio State. In a statement, Vrabel thanked all his former teams, but said he is "especially grateful to Bill Belichick and Scott Pioli" for teaching him "invaluable lessons on creating the ultimate team approach." He retires with 763 tackles, 57 sacks and three Super Bowl titles to his name.
