Colts GM Chris Ballard said the team 'will be open' to moving back from the No. 6 pick in next week's draft.
"We will be open to moving back if we think it is the right thing for us to do and there's enough players on the board," Ballard said. Numerous general managers have stated they would be open to moving back this week, so this isn't foretelling of any potential deal. The Colts own picks No. 6, No. 37, and No. 49 due to their blockbuster deal with the New York Jets in March. Apr 20 - 9:29 AM

Baylor coach Matt Rhule has removed his name from consideration for the Colts' head-coaching vacancy.

Typically, this means the candidate knows they are not going to get the job. Rhule, who is coming off a 1-11 season at Baylor, was always a long-shot. He was an outside-the-box interview for the Colts, one of the very few league-wide this coaching season.

Baylor coach Matt Rhule interviewed for the Colts' head-coaching vacancy earlier this week.

Rhule went just 1-11 in his first season at Baylor but drew widespread praise for the job he did during his four years at Temple. His only experience in the pros came when he served as the Giants' OL coach in 2012. The Colts have also interviewed Patriots OC Josh McDaniels, former Seahawks DC Kris Richard and Texans DC Mike Vrabel and will meet with Panthers DC Steve Wilks on Thursday.

Colts hired Jets director of college scouting Rex Hogan as VP of player personnel.

The Colts also hired Morocco Brown (director of college scouting), Kyle Childress (college scouting coordinator), Brian Decker (player personnel strategist) and Ed Dodds (co-VP of player personnel). Hogan had been with the Jets since 2015. He also has a history with new GM Chris Ballard. Hogan and Ballard spent nearly a decade working side-by-side as college scouts for the Bears.

Colts signed GM Chris Ballard to a five-year contract.

The length of the deal gives Ballard a long leash, but Jim Irsay did a good job raising the hurdles in the opening press conference. "I really feel that Chris is the best candidate for general manager that's come about so far in the 21st century," Irsay said. "That's how impressed we were with him. His energy, his experience, his vision, I know that he's going to get with coach [Chuck] Pagano and the Colts are a much better football team today." Ballard faces a tough task in rebuilding a bottom-half roster, but the presence of Andrew Luck gives him a big head start.

Colts hired Chiefs director of football operations Chris Ballard as GM.

It became abundantly clear Ballard would leave Kansas City for Indianapolis late this week. Ballard is expected to retain Chuck Pagano as head coach, although Pagano will be in a make-or-break year with Ballard reportedly targeting Chiefs special teams coach Dave Toub as soon as 2018. A longtime NFL scout, Ballard is highly regarded throughout league circles and appears to be a strong hire by owner Jim Irsay at surface level. Ballard will need to get to work on supplementing the Colts' talent base, which has sputtered for years beyond Andrew Luck and T.Y. Hilton.

The Colts will bring back Chiefs director of football operations Chris Ballard for a second interview for their GM vacancy.

That interview will occur on Monday. Ballard is the first candidate to get a second interview, which makes sense considering he is reportedly the "clear favorite" for the job. Ballard also reportedly wants to get rid of coach Chuck Pagano, but owner Jim Irsay has already said Pagano will be back with the team in 2017. After getting rid of a general manager who could not get along with his coach -- or seemingly anyone -- the Colts should be wary of beginning a new regime with a rift already starting to form between the coach and the front office. If Ballard is the guy and if he really wants a new coach, Irsay might have to walk back his comments.

Colts completed their first round of general manager interviews on Friday.

Current interim GM Jimmy Raye III and Packers director of football operations Eliot Wolf were the final two candidates to interview. Chiefs director of football operations Chris Ballard, Vikings assistant GM George Paton, and Seahawks co-directors of player personnel Trent Kirchner and Scott Fitterer interviewed earlier in the week. Ballard is believed to be the favorite, but the Colts are expected to bring back several candidates for second interviews.

KMBC Kansas City's Steven Albritton reports Chiefs director of football operations Chris Ballard is the "clear favorite" for the Colts' GM vacancy.

Albritton also reports Ballard "wants to change the head coach," removing Chuck Pagano after Pagano was initially retained despite GM Ryan Grigson's firing. NFL Network's Mike Garafolo also referred to Ballard as the "favorite" to replace Grigson on Friday. Ballard interviewed for the Colts' GM opening on Wednesday. Ballard's roots were as an area scout in the Bears' organization, where he spent 12 years before landing in Kansas City. Ballard earned a promotion under Chiefs GM John Dorsey to director of football operations in 2015.

Chiefs director of football operations Chris Ballard will interview for the Colts' general-manager vacancy on Wednesday.

Ballard has been a hot name in GM searches the past couple years. He turned down an interview request from the 49ers earlier this month, but the Colts job comes with a franchise quarterback in Andrew Luck. The Colts are casting a wide net in their search to replace overmatched Ryan Grigson.

USA Today's Tom Pelissero reports the Colts have requested permission to interview Chiefs Director of Football Operations Chris Ballard for their opening at GM.

The 49ers requested permission to interview Ballard earlier this month, but he turned them down. Perhaps he'd be willing to listen to an opportunity to work with Andrew Luck. Other candidates to replace Ryan Grigson include interim GM Jimmy Raye III, Seahawks Co-Directors of Player Personnel Scott Fitterer and Trent Kirchner, Vikings assistant GM George Paton and Packers Director of Football Operations Eliot Wolf.

Chiefs director of football operations Chris Ballard won't interview for the 49ers' open general manager position.

He wasn't interested in cleaning up the 49ers' mess. Ballard has a strong relationship with GM John Dorsey and clearly doesn't want to leave a great situation in Kansas City. The Chiefs won 12 games during the regular season, their most since 2003.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports the 49ers have requested an interview with Chiefs director of football operations Chris Ballard for their open general manager position.

Ballard has been a hot general manager candidate in recent years, and he interviewed with the Titans for their top spot last January. He will likely draw interest from other teams as the carousel revs up to full speed.

Chiefs director of football operations Chris Ballard will interview for the Titans' general manager vacancy Monday.

Ballard is expected to be the final candidate interviewed for the position. The Titans have not given a timetable for a decision, but Bucs director of player personnel Jon Robinson, who interviewed Friday, said he expected to hear back soon. With the coaching carousel spinning at full speed, the Titans need to get their front office sorted early this week.

The Titans will interview Chiefs director of football operations Chris Ballard for their general-manager vacancy.

Ballard has been a hot candidate in recent years; he interviewed for the Bucs' and Bears' GM in the past two years and seems primed to land a gig in the near future. The Titans will also interview Bucs director of player personnel Jon Robinson. Giants VP of player evaluation Marc Ross is interviewing Tuesday.
