Broncos agreed to terms with C Dan Koppen, formerly of the Patriots.
33-year-old Koppen is a veteran in the no-huddle/shotgun offense, and Broncos C J.D. Walton had problems with calling out protections in those sets Sunday night against the Steelers. Koppen could replace Walton as a starter quickly. Tue, Sep 11, 2012 12:20:00 AM

Patriots released C Dan Koppen.

Koppen, who appeared in just one game last year due to a broken ankle, lost his starting gig to Dan Connolly. It ends Koppen's nine-year, 120-start run with the Patriots.

Patriots C Dan Koppen has reiterated he's 100 percent recovered from the broken ankle that limited him to one game last season.

"I’m good," Koppen said Sunday. "I don’t even feel it anymore." Koppen will compete with Dan Connolly for the Patriots' starting center job. The Boston Globe has characterized the competition as "Connolly's to lose."

Updating a previous item, Patriots C Dan Koppen's two-year deal has a base value of just $3.05 million.

For a nearly 33-year-old center coming off a lost season, it's a much more realistic figure than the originally reported $6 million. Koppen can earn $2.7 million based on play-time incentives, but $400K of the deal consists of per-game roster bonuses and ultimately the contract hinges on Koppen making starts. He'll have to beat out Dan Connolly for the starting job in camp.

Recently re-signed Patriots C Dan Koppen says he's completely healed from the broken leg that limited him to one game in 2011.

"It’s been good for a long time," Koppen said. "No worries there." As long as that's true, Koppen should enter camp the heavy favorite to take back the starting job he's held since 2003 from Dan Connolly. Koppen also said he's hopeful of finishing his career in New England, but that he doesn't necessarily believe the two-year deal he signed Friday will be his final contract.

Patriots agreed to terms with C Dan Koppen on a two-year, $6 million contract.

Koppen's New England future was in question after he visited Tennessee while the Pats re-signed Dan Connolly. Koppen is entering his age-33 season after missing 15 games with a broken ankle in 2011. He's the clear favorite to start at center, leaving Connolly free to fill in at both guard spots. The Titans are still in the market for a center upgrade after whiffing on four veterans.

The Patriots discussed re-signing C Dan Koppen before the beginning of free agency.

Alas, the Pats have since re-signed C Dan Connolly to a three-year deal, and aren't known to have reached out to Koppen since the beginning of free agency. He'll make his first known visit when he heads to Tennessee later this week.

The Titans will host C Dan Koppen for a free agent visit later this week.

Per the Tennessean's Jim Wyatt, Koppen's visit could occur "as early as Wednesday." Koppen is a 32-year-old center-only coming off a severe ankle injury. The Patriots won't be re-signing Koppen after locking up Dan Connolly.

Free agent C Dan Koppen says he feels "great" after missing all but one game in 2011 with a broken ankle, and plans to continue playing in 2012.

Koppen turns 33 before the season, and the Pats may look to get younger at the position unless he's willing to do a low-cost deal. "I’d love to come back here and play," said Koppen. "But I’m not shut off to the idea of going other places or seeing the opportunities that may present themselves." Dan Connolly was the Pats' center all year, but he too is a free agent.

ESPN Boston believes the Patriots could allow free agent C Dan Koppen to walk.

Koppen was sent to injured reserve after breaking his ankle in Week 1. Fellow C Dan Connolly is also a free agent, but is three years younger than Koppen, who will turn 33 in September. After Connolly struggled in both pass protection and run blocking this season, however, the Pats should be open to re-signing Koppen if the price is right.

Patriots placed C Dan Koppen on injured reserve with a fractured left ankle and fibula, ending his season.

The Boston Herald's Ian Rapoport reports that Koppen's recovery timetable was set at 10-12 weeks. The Patriots simply can't afford to hold a roster spot for that long, even for a player as valuable as Koppen. They'll move forward with Dan Connolly as their starting center, thus losing effectiveness in the run game.

ESPN's Adam Schefter confirmed on SportsCenter Wednesday that Patriots C Dan Koppen needs surgery on his fractured left ankle and fibula.

The injury was initially described as a "small crack, bad sprain" in the ankle, but regardless Koppen will need an operation knocking him out "indefinitely," per Schefter. An injured reserve transaction doesn't appear to be imminent. It could be a possibility if Koppen doesn't show progress in 4-6 weeks.

Patriots C Dan Koppen is expected to miss 6-10 weeks with the fractured ankle suffered in Monday night's game.

Koppen has a chance to return at mid-season, so injured reserve isn't an option at this point. NFL Network's Albert Breer calls the injury a "small crack, bad sprain in the ankle," with minor surgery likely. Koppen was a top run blocker in 2010, but the downgrade to Dan Connolly isn't as severe in pass protection.

Dan Roche of WBZ-TV Boston is reporting that Dan Koppen suffered a broken left ankle in Monday's Week 1 win over Miami.

Koppen was carted off early and spent the remainder of the contest on the sideline on crutches and in a boot. He may return late in the season, but for now the Patriots will need Dan Connolly to take over at center. 34-year-old Brian Waters was able to play well Monday night as the primary right guard. The Patriots have enough quality depth to withstand a few injuries on the O-Line.

Patriots C Dan Koppen will not return after leaving Monday's Week 1 game against the Dolphins with a left ankle injury.

Koppen had his leg pinned under a defender and was carted off the field. He returned to the sideline after halftime with crutches and then was seen sporting a boot in the fourth quarter. Dan Connolly, who was playing in a rotation with Brian Waters at right guard prior to Koppen's injury, has taken over at center. The Pats are extremely thin across their offensive line, and have to be hoping that Koppen's injury isn't serious, though it's looking like wishful thinking at this point.
