Free agent OLB/DE Tully Banta-Cain is scheduled to visit the Jets Tuesday, a source tells Scout.com.

The Raiders put Banta-Cain through a physical last week and his surgically repaired abdomen muscle passed. Once up to game speed, the ex-Patriot could give the Jets' pass rush a boost off the edge -- he has 14.5 sacks over his last 31 games. Patriots informed OLB Tully Banta-Cain of his release.

The move saves $2.3 million in base salary. Banta-Cain has 15 sacks over the past two seasons, but recently underwent a serious surgery to repair a torn muscle in his abdomen and may not have been ready for Opening Day. It's possible the Pats could bring him back for less money (veteran's minimum?) during the season. The Patriots could also choose to move on if they acquire a free agent pass rusher such as Matt Roth or Mathias Kiwanuka.

Patriots OLB Tully Banta-Cain underwent surgery Friday to repair an abdominal tear.

Banta-Cain's abdominal issues worsened in recent workouts after lingering throughout last season. His five sacks were second only to Mike Wright's 5.5 last season. Pass rusher was already considered the Patriots' biggest need in free agency. This news could intensify New England's pursuit of Matt Roth or Mathias Kiwanuka, though the National Football Post hears TBC could be practicing again in 4-5 weeks.

Patriots OLB Tully Banta-Cain was benched for the team's Week 3 game against the Bills.

Banta-Cain led the Pats in sacks last year and had at least a half sack in each of the first two games, so his demotion was surprising. Rookie Jermaine Cunningham got the nod, and was mostly invisible with just two tackles.

Tully Banta-Cain and Derrick Burgess are expected to open the season as the Patriots' starting outside linebackers.

Burgess sat out most of camp for personal reasons, but was immediately installed with the first-team defense upon return. He obviously had no trouble holding off second-round rookie Jermaine Cunningham. Banta-Cain is the Pats' returning sack leader, so he was going to win a starting job all along.

He will earn $4.5M per season, with escalators that could push it to $6M per. Coming off a career year, Banta-Cain is not a good bet to live up to this contract. The deal doesn't solve the team's pass-rushing problems, but it will take them out of the running for high-profile free agents at the position.

The Pats cut Banta-Cain for procedural reasons in late October, only to re-sign him a day later. It was incorrectly reported at the time that an extension was involved. Now a free agent, the Pats' leading pass-rusher wants to re-sign in New England.

The Bills offensive line is a joke. All three sacks came in the fourth quarter, bringing his season total to 8 1/2. Banta-Cain has been the lone successful pass rusher for the Pats in a career year.

While the lopsided score had something to do with it, the Patriots are using TBC as more than just a third-down blitzer. He made an effort play against the Bucs that coach Bill Belichick called "one of the best plays we’ve had all year." Banta-Cain has 18 tackles and three sacks on the season.

Gronkowski emerged from surgery Monday afternoon.
