Kate Hairopoulos of the Dallas Morning News noted that Cowboys TE Rico Gathers "didn't get many chances" to catch passes during OTAs.
It seems Gathers, who beefed up to 282 pounds this offseason, has mostly worked as a blocking tight end. Gathers has been a trendy sleeper in fantasy leagues following the retirement of Jason Witten, but that enthusiasm might be wishful thinking. According to Hairopoulos, "it remains to be seen if the coaches believe he's absorbed the all-around duties of the position." The former Baylor power forward has yet to play a snap since arriving as a sixth-round pick in 2016. Jun 15 - 1:38 PM

Cowboys TE Rico Gathers said he is up to 282 pounds this offseason.

The former basketball player slimmed down to 265 pounds last season, but he thought that was too small to play tight end. "I was going for more trying to be quicker, trying to be faster," Gathers said. "But that hurt me in the blocking game a lot where I felt like I was just a body, just a body catching a blow." With Jason Witten retired, Dallas' starting tight end job is up for grabs. Gathers will compete with Geoff Swaim, Blake Jarwin and rookie Dalton Schultz for snaps.

Cowboys coach Jason Garrett said third-year TE Rico Gathers is still in the early stages of his development.

"He needs to play more football," said Garrett. "We could practice five times a day and that wouldn't be enough for him and a lot of our younger players, just because they need so much work." A 2016 sixth-round project, Gathers didn't appear in any games as a rookie and spent last season on IR. The Cowboys have a wide-open depth chart with Jason Witten retired, but Gathers looks likely to open training camp behind Geoff Swaim and Blake Jarwin.

Cowboys third-year TE Rico Gathers is recovered from his 2017 concussion.

Gathers missed the entirety of last season after suffering a summer concussion coupled with jaw and neck injuries. The 2016 sixth-round project has yet to appear in a regular-season game but flashed big-time potential last preseason to the tune of a 7-106-2 line in two exhibitions. He has some Martellus Bennett to him. Gathers is in the mix to replace retired Jason Witten in an offense desperate for playmakers in the passing game. He's worth a flier in best-ball leagues.

Cowboys TE Rico Gathers (injured reserve) is still dealing with concussion symptoms.

Considering he suffered the concussion more than a month and a half ago, it is a major concern. Gathers was at the team facility on Thursday, however, so it looks like he is making progress. Gathers is eligible to return Week 9, but that looks like a long shot at this point.

Cowboys placed TE Rico Gathers (concussion) on injured reserve.

He's can resume practicing in six weeks and playing in eight weeks, so he's out until Week 9 at the earliest. Gathers was a preseason sensation before suffering what is apparently a severe concussion, earning first-team reps in two-tight end sets alongside Jason Witten. Gathers remains a Dynasty-league hold.

Cowboys TE Rico Gathers (concussion) has been ruled out for Saturday's preseason game against the Raiders.

Gathers remains in the concussion protocol. He's been a pleasant surprise this preseason, nabbing seven catches for 106 yards and two touchdowns. The former Baylor power forward didn't see the field as a rookie.

Cowboys TE Rico Gathers is in the league's concussion protocol.

One of the most impressive players through two weeks of preseason, Gathers was hurt in Tuesday's practice. Consider him week-to-week for now and doubtful for Dallas' third exhibition. Gathers has a 7-106-2 line this preseason.

Cowboys TE Rico Gathers has been getting first-team reps with the red zone offense in 7-on-7 drills.

There are a lot of qualifiers there, but it's still notable. The converted basketball player has lit up the Cowboys' first two preseason games, posting a 7/106/2 line. He's been a mismatch. The Dynasty league stash is going to make the Cowboys' 53-man roster. He'll need to prove his worth as a blocker and special teamer to crack the 46-man roster on Sundays.

Cowboys TE Rico Gathers caught 4-of-6 targets for 47 yards and a touchdown in Saturday's preseason game.

It was the converted basketball player's second straight preseason game with a score. He's now up to 7/106/2 on the summer, and increasingly looking like someone who is going to force himself onto the 53-man roster. Gathers doesn't have a legitimate 2017 path to re-draft value behind Jason Witten, but is absolutely someone who needs to be scooped up in Dynasty leagues.

The Cowboys want to get a long look at second-year TE Rico Gathers this summer.

"He's going to play a lot of snaps over the next four weeks," coach Jason Garrett said. A basketball player who didn't play a single down of football at Baylor, Gathers redshirted as a rookie. He flashed in last week's Hall-of-Fame game, posting a 3/59/1 line. His touchdown was an acrobatic 26-yard grab. Gathers won't make a 2017 fantasy impact, but is a name to file away in Dynasty leagues.

Cowboys second-year TE Rico Gathers says he feels his game is "a thousand times better" than during his rookie offseason.

A power forward at Baylor, Gathers flashed during his rookie preseason and then on the scout-team offense with Tony Romo in late-season practices. Inside the locker room, 6-foot-6, 290-pound Gathers has earned the nickname "Zeus," while ex-TEs coach Mike Pope reportedly told Gathers he would "one day become a Pro Bowl tight end." As Jason Witten is now 35 years old, Gathers is a deep Dynasty league prospect worth monitoring.

Cowboys signed No. 217 overall pick TE Rico Gathers to a four-year contract.

At Baylor, Gathers was a First Team All-Big 12 selection in basketball. He hasn't played football since middle school but his size and athleticism intrigued the Cowboys enough to spend a late-round flier on him. The Cowboys have now signed six of their nine draft picks.
