Patriots inside linebacker Tedy Bruschi has decided to retire from football.
He'll make the announcement Monday at 10:45AM ET (Bruschi -- barely sleeps in on retirement day). A 13-year career Patriot, Bruschi captained three Super Bowl winners, registered five 100+ tackle seasons, and was a Pro Bowler in 2004. The former college defensive end played inside linebacker, outside, and end in pass-rush situations throughout his career. His October return from an offseason stroke earned him Comeback Player of the Year honors in 2005. Bruschi will likely fall short of the Hall of Fame, but is a shoe-in for the Patriots' Ring of Honor and may have his No. 54 retired. Sun, Aug 30, 2009 11:07:00 PM

Al Michaels said on NBC's Sunday Night Football broadcast that Patriots LB Tedy Bruschi plans to announce his retirement.

The Patriots confirmed that they'll hold a "special announcement" on Monday. The 36-year-old career Pat has declined sharply over the last three seasons and recently lost his starting job to second-year former undrafted free agent Gary Guyton. Bruschi was scheduled to earn $1.9 million in 2009. If he hangs 'em up, the Patriots will be off the hook for that money.

Patriots LB Tedy Bruschi says he's willing to accept a non-starting role this season.

Bruschi played with the second team against the Bengals last week, with Gary Guyton starting inside next to Jerod Mayo. It's a good move for the Pats defense as Bruschi has lost more than a step over the past few seasons.

Patriots LB Tedy Bruschi remains undecided about playing beyond 2009.

The 14-year veteran has been limited to first and second downs the past couple of years. An important leader for the Pats, Bruschi prefers to keep his future options open.

Tedy Bruschi responded via email to the Boston Herald regarding the trade of longtime teammate and close friend Mike Vrabel.

"We’ve lost perhaps our best all around football player," he said. "Defense, offense, special teams, Vrabes did it all. His intelligence and on field adjustments can not be replaced. This team has just changed immensely." With Vrabel gone, Bruschi's leadership on the New England defense will become even more important.

The Boston Globe reports Patriots ILB Tedy Bruschi intends to return in 2009 for the final season on his contract.

Bruschi will not need surgery on the torn MCL that kept him out the final three weeks of the season. With the Pats lacking experience in the middle of their defense, the 35-year-old is certain to be welcomed back at a reasonable $1.9 million price tag.
Tue, Jan 6, 2009 09:57:00 AM's Adam Schefter reports that Patriots ILB Tedy Bruschi's MCL is indeed torn. He won't be available before the playoffs.

New England is currently in the process of determining whether Bruschi will go to injured reserve. This is normally a 3-6 week injury, but for a player as old as Bruschi (35), there's no guarantee that he'd recovery quickly.

ESPN's John Clayton reports that Patriots ILB Tedy Bruschi's knee injury is "probably" to his MCL.

Whether it's torn or sprained isn't known, but Bruschi isn't expected to play again this season. He reportedly doesn't need surgery. Still, the injury is career threatening because Bruschi turns 36 in the offseason.

While LB Tedy Bruschi's knee injury is likely to keep him out only 3-4 weeks, the Patriots are reportedly considering putting him on IR and ending his season.

The Patriots need healthy bodies on defense while they try to claw into the playoffs, and can't afford to keep Bruschi's roster spot open while he's sidelined.

Tedy Bruschi left the game against the Seahawks with a knee injury in the first half.

He went to the locker room and later returned to the sidelines. His return is questionable.

Patriots re-signed LB Tedy Bruschi to a two-year contract. The deal includes a $1.2 million signing bonus.

Surprising it's not a one-year pact, but Bruschi is year-to-year regardless. Bruschi had 93 stops and two sacks in 2007, but is unlikely to be an IDP asset this season. He's no longer more than a two-down linebacker and the Patriots hope he'll be a situational player in 2008.

Tedy Bruschi is expected to decide Thursday whether he'll play in 2008.

The "prevailing sentiment" is that Bruschi will opt against hanging up his cleats, according to the Boston Herald. Bruschi turns 35 years old in June.

Free agent LB Tedy Bruschi is expected to decide shortly whether he'll play football in 2008.

"As he says, he’s still taking inventory," Bruschi's agent said. "And I’m sure (his wife) is involved in that. I think he’ll try and figure this out pretty soon." The Pats would likely take Bruschi back, but only in a situational role.

The Patriots might have potential free agent Tedy Bruschi back this season in a situational role.

One of New England's top offseason priorities will be upgrading at inside linebacker. Bruschi, who turns 35 in June, struggled versus the run in 2007. Free agent Junior Seau is in the same boat, although he recently turned 39.

Tedy Bruschi and Junior Seau have been rotating in at the Patriots' weak inside linebacker spot.

Bruschi is averaging under four tackles per game, while Seau is averaging close to five a contest. Bruschi made two sacks in Week 5, equaling his season total from a year ago. Seau had two INTs in the win over Cleveland.
