Vikings TE Jim Kleinsasser confirmed that he plans to retire after the 2011 season.

The Vikings had interest in bringing back the 34-year-old impending free agent, but Kleinsasser wants to walk away "with two legs that work great and my head is still intact." A team leader and plus blocker, Kleinsasser has 192 career receptions for 1,688 yards.

Kleinsasser turns 35 in January, and his offensive role continues to decline. After spending his entire career in Minnesota, it's believed that Kleinsasser has no interest in moving his family to another city if the Vikings don't want him back.

Vikings TE Jim Kleinsasser could be out of a roster spot in Minnesota after the team drafted Kyle Rudolph in the second round.

Kleinsasser, 34, has caught just 17 passes over the last two seasons and averaged a paltry 8.1 yards per catch. He has one touchdown since 2003. Kleinsasser is due a $3 million salary, and the Vikings' roster needs to get younger. Rudolph will be Visanthe Shiancoe's running mate in two-tight end sets. Versatile TE/FB Jeff Dugan could fill Kleinsasser's old role.

Kleinsasser was reported to be drawing early interest from four teams, but his preference all along was to stay in Minnesota. Known as a terrific blocker, his return bodes well for the Vikings' skill position players.

Kleinsasser took a $1 million salary reduction in 2007 and a $500,000 drop for 2008, when his new base pay will be $2.4 million. He may be given the opportunity to earn the money back in a performance bonus.

Kleinsasser usually started games but had a career-low seven catches in a season where he was healthy. The best tight ends in the upcoming draft are not necessarily first-round picks. Minnesota could take a look at Eric Johnson in free agency, as he seems to fit Brad Childress' profile.

Mike Tice made keeping two tight ends on the field a priority. Childress may not do that, but the Eagles always kept L.J. Smith and Chad Lewis involved. Kleinsasser still won't be a fantasy option.

He's the forgotten tight end in Minnesota, but not much of a fantasy option. His career high is 401 yards receiving, so this could be as good as it gets.

The blocking tight end may have less receiving chances this year because of Jermaine Wiggins' emergence. He should be 100% healthy by week one, but is no longer much of a fantasy option.
