The Seahawks plan to use Antoine Winfield as strictly a nickel back, giving him around 600 defensive snaps.
He played 1,100 in Minnesota last season. Winfield is plenty capable of starting games at left cornerback, but the Seahawks want him in the slot, wreaking havoc on inside receivers and ball carriers closer to the line of scrimmage. He's also a quality insurance policy should LCB Richard Sherman suffer injury. Apr 15 - 1:58 PM

Antoine Winfield's one-year contract with Seattle is worth $3 million with $1 million guaranteed.

Not that we should be surprised considering GM John Schneider's consistently savvy player acquisition, but it's quite the value pickup for the Seahawks. Winfield graded out in 2012 as Pro Football Focus' best cornerback in the league. (Richard Sherman was No. 2 and Brandon Browner was 22 among 113 qualifiers.) Per NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, the Broncos and Patriots dabbled in the Winfield bidding, in addition to Seattle, Washington, and Minnesota.

Seahawks agreed to terms with CB Antoine Winfield, formerly of the Vikings, on a one-year contract.

Winfield, 36 in June, picked the Seahawks over the Vikings and Redskins. His addition is a massive upgrade on injury-prone burn victim Marcus Trufant, who manned the slot for Seattle last season. Sandwiching Winfield between Richard Sherman and Brandon Browner gives Seattle arguably the top corner trio in the league. The Seahawks' roster has no holes outside of a partially questionable offensive line. They're shaping up as the early Super Bowl favorite.

Free agent CB Antoine Winfield is expected to pick between the Seahawks, Vikings, and Redskins this weekend.

The Seahawks and Vikings seem to be the front-runners with the Redskins in a distant third. It's going to be an emotional decision. The 35-year-old has strong ties to the community in Minnesota, but the Seahawks offer him a better chance to compete for a Super Bowl. CBS Sports' Jason La Canfora reports Winfield "stands to do well" financially with whichever team he picks.

NFL.com's Ian Rapoport reports free agent CB Antoine Winfield is deciding between the Seahawks and Vikings, and that the situation is "very fluid."

Rapoport expects Winfield to decide "soon." ESPN's Ed Werder reported earlier Wednesday that the Seahawks were "closing in" on Winfield, so they should be considered the favorite. The "very fluid" designation may just be an attempt on Winfield's part to wring a few extra dimes out of Seattle.

ESPN's Ed Werder reports the Seahawks are "closing in" on signing free agent CB Antoine Winfield.

It would mean the aggressive 'Hawks beat out the Vikings and Redskins for Winfield's services, who both have bigger needs at cornerback. Although he's going on 36, Winfield remains one of the league's best nickel corners. Winfield would be a big upgrade on Marcus Trufant, and make for one of the league's most imposing CB trios alongside Richard Sherman and Brandon Browner.

The Washington Examiner reports the Redskins "remain a strong option" for free agent Antoine Winfield.

Winfield visited the Seahawks on Monday. Minnesota "remains interested," and a fourth unnamed team is trying to get Winfield to visit. The Examiner's John Keim speculates the Broncos could be the mystery team. A source with knowledge of the situation tells Keim that Winfield wants to make a decision "soon."
Apr 8 - 10:46 PM

Coach Leslie Frazier has "remained in contact" with free agent CB Antoine Winfield, and is "hoping" he re-signs with the Vikings.

"We all like to know we're wanted," Frazier said Sunday. "I've tried to make that clear to him. I'll let him know, 'If you've got any questions, you know how to reach me.'" The Vikings now have to beat out the Seahawks in addition to the Redskins for Winfield's services. With the best roster and most cap space, Seattle is probably the favorite to land the 35-year-old corner.
Apr 8 - 8:18 AM

At roughly $9 million, the Seahawks have more salary cap space than fellow Antoine Winfield bidders Minnesota and Washington.

So Seattle could win any potential bidding war. The Seahawks also boast the most talented roster in football and could give Winfield his best shot at a Super Bowl ring. Vikings coach Leslie Frazier has kept in touch with Winfield throughout his free agency and remains optimistic about a reunion. "I don't know what direction he's leaning, but I'm hoping he'll come back and be a Viking," Frazier said.
Apr 7 - 11:07 PM

Free agent CB Antoine Winfield will visit the Seahawks early this week.

Winfield, 36 in June, would be a massive upgrade on fellow free agent Marcus Trufant in the slot with Seattle. The Vikings and Redskins remain interested in the veteran's services.
Apr 7 - 9:57 AM

The Vikings remain interested in re-signing free agent CB Antoine Winfield.

Minnesota released the veteran corner last month, but has maintained all along the door is open for his return. The Redskins have been fighting hard to bring Winfield aboard, but only have $669,000 in cap space. The Vikings have $4.4 million, and coach Leslie Frazier has made it clear he wants Winfield back.
Apr 3 - 8:08 PM

Free agent CB Antoine Winfield is not expected to make a decision until next week.

Along with RT Andre Smith and DE John Abraham, Winfield is among the top free agents left on the market. The Redskins have been pushing to sign him despite bringing back DeAngelo Hall and the Vikings remain firmly in the mix. Both clubs will have to do some salary cap maneuvering to meet Winfield's financial desires.
Apr 3 - 12:38 PM

The Washington Post reports the Redskins "remain interested" in free agent CB Antoine Winfield despite re-signing DeAngelo Hall.

"There is high mutual interest," a source said. "Re-signing Hall didn’t change that." According to the source, Hall's return may actually make Winfield more likely to sign with the 'Skins. "At this point in his career, (Winfield) wants to win, and (Washington) has made moves to further solidify the roster, and re-signing Hall only helps." What's unclear is if the Redskins have the money to sign Winfield. They reportedly had just over $1 million in cap space before signing Hall. Winfield hasn't made any other visits since visiting Washington last Wednesday.
Apr 2 - 7:53 PM

The Vikings have been in "daily contact" with free agent CB Antoine Winfield's reps.

Winfield is weighing an offer from the Redskins, but is reportedly hoping for $5 million. Neither the Redskins nor the Vikings could afford that. Winfield is still an elite option in the slot, but will likely have to settle for somewhere in the neighborhood of $2-$3 million.
Mar 29 - 10:08 AM

CBS Sports' Jason La Canfora reports the Broncos are among free agent CB Antoine Winfield's options.

The Redskins are viewed as the favorite, but they need to clear some cap space in order to make it work. The Vikings and Broncos are two other options that have now been mentioned. Denver already has a young stud in Chris Harris covering the slot, along with solid depth on the outside. It's hard to see the fit.
