Giants signed CB Brian Williams, formerly of the Falcons.

Williams, 32, served as the Falcons' slot corner for most of last season, beating out Chris Owens for snaps. Covering the slot was going to be one of Terrell Thomas' tasks on passing downs before his ACL tear. Williams struggles in coverage after several knee and leg injuries. He may have to be New York's nickel back for the first month with Prince Amukamara out until Week 5.

The Giants worked out free agent CBs Brian Williams and Lito Sheppard, and the Newark Star-Ledger reports that Williams is expected to sign.

Williams is 32 and Sheppard 30. The latter is familiar with a Giants-type defensive scheme after spending most of his career with the Eagles, though Sheppard's performance has fallen off dramatically since those years. Despite his age, Williams has been a more effective player in recent seasons.

Falcons declared CB Brian Williams, LB Spencer Adkins, OT Garrett Reynolds, OG Mike Johnson, TE Michael Palmer, DE Lawrence Sidbury, DT Trey Lewis, and third QB John Parker Wilson inactive for the Divisional Round.

Chris Owens will replace Williams at nickel back. Williams was listed as doubtful on the injury report with a knee ailment. Otherwise, Atlanta is healthy. Look for Owens to match up with Donald Driver often in the slot.

Falcons nickelback Brian Williams (knee) is listed as doubtful for Saturday's game against the Packers.

This one stings. Chris Owens will move into the spotlight against a Packers offense that has used three-wide as a base set. Rookie Dominique Franks will be active as Atlanta's fourth corner.

A Monday MRI on Falcons CB Brian Williams' knee revealed no damage.

Williams left Sunday's game against Carolina in the first half and did not return, yet said he'll be able to play in the team's first playoff game. Atlanta has a first-round bye, so the nickel back has an extra week to rest his knee.

Falcons CB Brian Williams has overtaken Chris Owens as the team's nickel back.

Williams was the one to fill in for the injured Dunta Robinson at right cornerback last week, and he's now supplanted Owens. He registered three tackles in the game despite having to leave for a time with leg cramps.

Falcons' beat writer D. Orlando Ledbetter has CB Brian Williams "on the roster bubble."

Ledbetter also speculates that Christopher Owens, who has been one of many to see snaps in the absence of Dunta Robinson, will emerge as the nickel back.

The Falcons' starting right cornerback job is "wide open" entering training camp.

$57-million free agent signee Dunta Robinson is expected to play a shutdown role at left corner. On the other side of the field, Brian Williams is considered the early favorite, although he is still recovering from a torn ACL suffered in Week Six of 2009. Other candidates include Chevis Jackson, Chris Owens, and Brent Grimes, who led the Falcons with six interceptions last season.

Falcons CB Brian Williams (ACL surgery) is expected to be ready for training camp.

Williams tore his knee in Week 6 of last season, meaning he may not be 100 percent in July. He won't be relied upon too heavily anyway with Dunta Robinson locked in as the No. 1 corner. Williams will compete for snaps against Chris Owens and Brent Grimes.

Falcons re-signed CB Brian Williams to a one-year, $1.6 million contract.

Williams is going on age 31 and tore his ACL in October, but is a longtime pal of coach Mike Smith and wasn't an obvious liability before his injury. Still, he should have a hard time winning back a starting job, assuming the team upgrades its corner situation as planned. Another option would be moving Williams into a third safety/nickel back role if he's able to play at 100%.

Falcons coach Mike Smith confirmed that LCB Brian Williams tore his ACL in Sunday's win. He'll be placed on injured reserve, ending his season.

Brent Grimes will take over. Williams' season ends with 18 tackles, one pick, and three pass breakups in five starts. He was a reliable cover man and versed in Smith's scheme, so it's a pretty big loss. Atlanta does have talented backups, but Grimes and Jackson will have to step up their performance. Williams was on a one-year deal and may not return in 2010 at age 31.

Falcons CB Brian Williams is out for the year after tearing his ACL in Sunday's win over the Bears, according to Alex Marvez of FOXSports.com.

It's a big blow to the Falcons' defense. Williams went up with Greg Olsen on a late-game fade pattern but came down very awkwardly on his leg. Williams will likely be replaced by Brent Grimes at left corner, with Chevis Jackson and rookie Chris Owens getting more snaps in nickel packages.

Falcons CB Brian Williams left Sunday night's game with a right knee injury and has been ruled out for the rest of the contest.

Williams made an excellent play on an end-zone fade to Bears TE Greg Olsen, but landed awkwardly on the way down and his knee buckled. It'd be a huge blow to the Falcons' defense if he's forced to miss a few weeks.

Newly signed CB Brian Williams is starting for the Falcons over Brent Grimes in Week 1.

This doesn't say much for Grimes or the other Falcons corners. Ted Ginn will likely be matched up with Chris Houston, so Greg Camarillo will draw Williams in coverage. Inactive for the Falcons: QB John Parker Wilson, CB Tye Hill, S William Moore, LB Spencer Adkins, OT Will Svitek, OT Garrett Reynolds, and DT Trey Lewis.
