Chargers ILB Demorrio Williams (ankle) has been ruled out for Week 15.
With Donald Butler (groin) also sidelined, San Diego will likely turn to a rotation between Bront Bird and Andrew Gatchkar opposite Takeo Spikes. Bird played 19 snaps last week after Williams left the game and recorded six total tackles and an interception. Bird's role in the Chargers base and subpackage defenses is unclear, so owners in IDP leagues are best advised to avoid this situation. Sat, Dec 15, 2012 12:15:00 PM

Chargers LB Demorrio Williams is expected to see "sufficient snaps" at inside linebacker.

Per the Union-Tribune San Diego, Williams has "impressed" this offseason. It's unclear how many snaps would be "sufficient," but it's likely more than the 69 Williams saw for the Chiefs last season. Second-year pro Jonas Mouton will be a higher upside backup to Donald Butler and Takeo Spikes at inside linebacker.

Chargers agreed to terms with LB Demorrio Williams, formerly of the Chiefs, on a one-year contract.

The 31-year-old will stay in the AFC West as a backup to Takeo Spikes and Donald Butler in San Diego. Williams reportedly had interest from 5-6 teams, and chose the Chargers as his best shot at playing time.

Chiefs released LB Demorrio Williams.

The move will reportedly save $1.7 million in cap space. According to Pro Football Focus, Williams played just 73 defensive snaps last season as a backup linebacker. Turning 31 in July, Williams will have to battle for a roster spot no matter where he lands.

Demorrio Williams appears to have his nose in front of Derrick Johnson for the starting weak-side inside linebacker job.

The Chiefs still haven't declared a winner in this battle, widely considered one of the fiercest in camp. What we do know is that Williams has been lining up as an outside linebacker in pass-rushing situations, a role that could give his IDP value a boost. Williams hasn't been asked to get to the quarterback since his senior year at Nebraska in 2003.

The Chiefs credited ILB Demorrio Williams with a team-leading 142 tackles, the most by a Chief since Scott Fujita's 151 in 2003.

The NFL credits Williams with 117 combined tackles, which still led the team. Despite the tackle numbers, Williams provided no big-play impact. He didn't record a single interception, forced fumble, or sack while posting just two tackles for a loss. He could be fighting Derrick Johnson for the starting job again next season.

Demorrio Williams is now starting over Derrick Johnson at inside linebacker for the Chiefs.

Johnson has been in and out of the doghouse over the first five games of the season. Williams has struggled to earn playing time since signing a $16 million contract before the 2008 season, and he's not likely to be an improvement over Johnson.

Former Chiefs defensive coordinator Gunther Cunningham blamed the team's 2008 struggles on a failed mix of free agents and rookies.

"If you have a lot of young players that you’re going to draft, you have to make sure you work the whole process," he said. "They tried to add (free agents) like Demorrio Williams. He doesn’t have enough experience and enough ability to lead a bunch of rookies." Williams got a $16M contract last year.

Demorrio Williams will be the Chiefs' starting weak-side linebacker while Donnie Edwards (ankle) is sidelined.

Edwards is out through K.C.'s Week 6 bye. Williams is highly athletic and could run down more ball carriers than Edwards, who's lost a few steps.

Chiefs LB Demorrio Williams broke a bone in his hand during Tuesday's practice and will miss the team's final two preseason games.

Williams expects to be ready by opening day, but he's already looking like a free agent bust. He didn't claim a starting job in camp and will have a tough time getting snaps once the regular season gets underway.

The Chiefs are now trying LB Demorrio Williams as a situational pass rusher at training camp.

The old Kendrell Bell treatment. Even nagging injuries to Donnie Edwards and Napoleon Harris haven't catapulted Williams into the starting lineup.

Demorrio Williams, who signed a $16 million deal in March, has seen "noticeably few" first-team reps at the start of Chiefs camp.

Williams wasn't a clear starter at OTAs, either. It appears Napoleon Harris is still at MLB with Donnie Edwards on the weak side for now. Significant IDP value is likely to emerge from the training camp battles at both positions.

Chiefs WLB Demorrio Williams is only running as a starter at OTAs due to Donnie Edwards' sore hamstring.

Napoleon Harris still has his middle linebacker job, although it may not last for long. The initial plan was for Edwards to move inside and Williams to play the weak side. This remains a big IDP battle area to monitor.

NFL Network's Adam Schefter reports that the Chiefs have agreed to terms with LB Demorrio Williams on a five-year, $16 million contract, with $5.5 million guaranteed.

Let's hope he's not another Kendrell Bell. Williams is a rangy defender who has always racked up tackles, but there are questions about his toughness. He fits the Kansas City mold as a young defender with speed and should start right away. He has some IDP upside.

Scout.com's Adam Caplan reports free agent OLB Demorrio Williams has set up visits with the Bucs, Chiefs, and Chicago Bears.

Williams struggled to fend off rookie Stephen Nicholas last year, but his combination of skills and athleticism is highly intriguing. The Bucs, Chiefs, and Bears all run Cover 2 variations. Williams plays the weak side.
