Patrick Mahomes completed 23-of-36 passes for 352 yards with four touchdowns and two interceptions in Kansas City's Week 6 loss to the Patriots.
Mahomes struggled in the first half before exploding over the final two quarters. He hit Kareem Hunt for a 67-yard touchdown on the opening drive of second half, with all three of his other TDs going to Tyreek Hill. Mahomes got some help from a Patriots secondary that let Hill get past them for huge gains with broken coverages. The Chiefs lost on a last second field goal, but this was another strong showing from Mahomes after leading the Chiefs to a win over Jacksonville last week. Patrick Mahomes completed 22-of-38 passes for 313 yards and two interceptions and rushed four times for 13 yards and a touchdown in the Chiefs' Week 5 win over the Jaguars.

This was the toughest test of Mahomes' young career, and he passed with flying colors. He was extremely sharp early, spreading the ball around in his trademark fashion, and capped the opening drive with a four-yard rushing score off a bootleg. He did throw his first interception on the season in the second quarter on a high pass across the middle, but that was the only time Kansas City's offense was stopped in the first half. He did not have much to do in the second half, but Mahomes answered a Jacksonville touchdown drive with one of his own in which he hit Tyreek Hill with a great pass for 36 yards up the sideline. He threw another careless interception in the fourth, but it did not ultimately matter. The fantasy stats were not spectacular, but Mahomes has proven he is matchup-proof. He will be a high-end play next week in New England.
Oct 7 - 4:29 PM

Patrick Mahomes completed 28-of-45 passes for 304 yards and one touchdown in the Chiefs' 27-23, Week 4 win over the Broncos on Monday night.

He also rushed for an eight-yard touchdown, his first score on the ground this season. Mahomes got off to a real rough start, heading into halftime with just 65 yards passing. The Broncos were coming at him from all angles, and Mahomes was running for his life most of the night. His 192 yards passing outside the pocket, according to ESPN, are the most in the last decade. The Chiefs were down by 10 with just over 12 minutes left, and Mahomes ended up engineering an incredible comeback, creating plays with his legs, throwing darts on the run, and even completing a pass left-handed to Tyreek Hill while running for his life on third down. He also overcame a 2nd-and-30 situation in the fourth quarter with pass plays of 23 and 35 yards. The box-score numbers don't tell the whole story. Mahomes is a star and gets a tough Jaguars defense in K.C. for Week 5.
Oct 1 - 11:25 PM

Patrick Mahomes completed 24-of-38 passes for 314 yards and three touchdowns in the Chiefs' Week 3 win over the 49ers.

The three scores give Mahomes the record for most touchdown passes (13) in the first three games of a season, and he could have had more. He missed a couple throws in the first half including what should have been a touchdown to Tyreek Hill, and the Chiefs attempted just 13 passes in the second half of the easy win. Leading what looks like an unstoppable offense, blowouts might be the only thing which can stop Mahomes from putting up massive fantasy days. A trip to Denver next Monday night might look daunting, but the Broncos' defense has struggled a bit early in the season. Mahomes will be the top overall quarterback next week.
Sep 23 - 4:23 PM

Patrick Mahomes completed 23-of-28 passes for 326 yards and six touchdowns in the Chiefs' 42-37, Week 2 win over the Steelers.

With 10 touchdowns, Mahomes now owns the record for the most scores through the first two weeks of the season. Mahomes was just reaving souls, ripping chunk plays whenever and wherever he wanted. Unlike last week's Tyreek Hill-dominated affair, Mahomes got everyone involved, finding each of Hill, Travis Kelce and Sammy Watkins for at least 90 yards. Mahomes was throwing lasers into tight coverage in the red zone, finding Kelce and Chris Conley for impressive scores. Mahomes is the real deal and could not have a better setup on a videogame. He will look to stay scorching as an elite QB1 in Week 3 against the 49ers.
Sep 16 - 4:25 PM

Patrick Mahomes competed 15-of-27 passes for 256 yards and four touchdowns in the Chiefs' 38-28, Week 1 win over the Chargers, adding five rushes for 21 additional yards.

Relentlessly hyped all offseason, Mahomes came out and made a statement against the Chargers' Joey Bosa-less defense. His third pass was a 58-yard touchdown strike to Tyreek Hill. Mahomes found Hill a silly seven times for 169 yards and a pair of TDs. Two of Mahomes' four scores were goal line shovel passes. In addition to the passing, Mahomes was used frequently as a runner, both on traditional and read options. Mahomes looked like a born playmaker in just his second NFL start. There are going to be growing pains with any young player, but Mahomes could rapidly become an every-week QB1. He gets the Steelers in Pittsburgh for Week 2.
Sep 9 - 7:16 PM

Pat Mahomes completed 18-of-24 passes for 196 yards and a touchdown in Kansas City's third preseason game.

Mahomes made some good reads but didn't have any highlights, with his touchdown a dumpoff to Kareem Hunt against the blitz. The preseason tape on Mahomes has been encouraging — he's completed 72-percent of his passes for 367 yards and a 2:1 TD/INT ratio. Mahomes is in a breakout spot after sitting behind Alex Smith last year. His arm strength and rushing upside are as good as any quarterback in the league.
Aug 25 - 3:22 PM

Pat Mahomes completed 8-of-12 passes for 138 yards with a touchdown and an interception in the Chiefs' second preseason game.

Mahomes started slow, nearly getting picked in the end-zone on Kansas City's first scoring drive and later throwing a bad interception into double coverage. He rebounded the next series, hitting Tyreek Hill on a 69-yard touchdown bomb. There's a lot to like with Mahomes' gunslinger upside, but turnover struggles and a run-heavy offense limit his floor. Mahomes gets a matchup with Chicago in next week's preseason dress rehearsal.
Aug 17 - 8:50 PM

Pat Mahomes completed 5-of-7 passes for 33 yards in the Chiefs' preseason opener.

Mahomes' first pass of the night was a 14-yard gain to Travis Kelce, and the tight end picked up another first down on the next series. That was about it for the starting offense. Mahomes has reportedly struggled with interceptions in camp, and it would not be surprising if that continued into his first season as the starter. Even so, his playmaking ability makes him an intriguing late-round option.
Aug 9 - 9:22 PM

Chiefs coach Andy Reid isn't concerned that Patrick Mahomes has thrown eight interceptions across seven training camp sessions.

Mahomes' picks have become a topic of Twitter discussion. "I told you at the beginning of camp I don’t care about all that stuff," Reid said. "I want him to test the offense. ... If you don’t have the intestinal fortitude to go test it you’re going to be one of those quarterbacks who checks it down every time. That’s not what it’s all about." Reid might as well be subtweeting former quarterback Alex Smith. Mahomes threw 29 interceptions across 32 college starts.
Aug 2 - 1:30 PM

Pat Mahomes has thrown seven interceptions through six practices at Chiefs training camp.

He threw three picks on Wednesday alone. Chiefs OC Eric Bienemy acknowledged Mahomes has experienced "hiccups," albeit unsurprising for a first-year starter with a gunslinger's game. Beat writer Adam Teicher did note Mahomes is mixing in "his fair share of big plays in practice." Practice is an ideal setting for Mahomes to go through growing pains, of course. Regardless, he's likely to be a higher-variance option than predecessor Alex Smith.

Aug 1 - 9:36 PM

Chiefs coach Andy Reid says Patrick Mahomes has impressed him with his ability to adjust to the blitz this offseason.

"We wanted to come in and make sure we challenged him," Reid said of pre-snap adjustments. "I thought he handled that very well. One of the big things for young kids is just the blitz game, so we put a big emphasis on that and tried to give him a lot of different looks there." Although it's not necessarily surprising, Mahomes has drawn universally positive reviews for his offseason work. Mahomes will open the year as a high-end streamer with a shot at every-week QB1 status.

Sports Illustrated reports the rookie-year progress of Patrick Mahomes played a role in the Chiefs trading Alex Smith.

"He’s way ahead of schedule," a Chiefs coach told MMQB’s Albert Breer. "Hearing the play, calling it, motions, shifts, coverage recognition, all of that is much easier. Throwing the football has always been the fun part for him." Mahomes will get a full offseason as Kansas City’s starter after spending his first year learning behind Smith. A college producer with dual-threat skills, Mahomes has the makings for a 2018 breakout.
Feb 2 - 7:01 PM

Following Tuesday night's trade of Alex Smith, second-year QB Patrick Mahomes is fully expected to enter 2018 as the Chiefs' starter.

The Chiefs and Redskins agreed to a deal that will send Smith to D.C. when the new league year opens March 14. Mahomes started the Chiefs' meaningless Week 17 game against the Broncos, but it was anything but meaningless in the grand scheme of things, as K.C. got a look at the future. And it appears bright. Mahomes went 22-of-35 for 284 yards with a supporting cast of backups. Mahomes can make any throw on the field and should open things up even more with Tyreek Hill deep. Smith at times was averse to taking chances downfield, though he did open up more in a career 2017 season. Mahomes will certainly have his growing pains, but he has scintillating upside. Dual-threat Mahomes is a dark horse fantasy QB1 as soon as 2018.
Jan 30 - 9:41 PM

Patrick Mahomes completed 22-of-35 passes for 284 yards, zero touchdowns and an interception in the Chiefs' Week 17 win over the Broncos.

Making his NFL debut, the first-round rookie added seven carries for 10 yards. Although he was playing with a limited supporting cast against a Broncos team that had nothing to play for, Mahomes was as advertised from his draft profile, making aggressive decisions down the field while showing off a cannon arm. Mahomes was fingertips away from a touchdown in the second half, but was a millisecond too early on an end zone timing route to Demetrius Harris. Mahomes briefly headed to the bench in favor of Tyler Bray, but returned to conduct a game-winning field goal drive. At least as of now, Mahomes appears poised to spend, or at least begin, one more season on the bench behind Alex Smith. Going on 34, Smith is due $17 million between salary and bonuses in the final year of his contract in 2018.
