Lions backup QB Shaun Hill is recovering from a minor offseason foot surgery.
Hill had surgery to repair a "nagging" injury. He expects to participate in some portions of OTAs and should be 100 percent by training camp. Hill, now 33 years old, is entering a contract season. As Matthew Stafford stayed healthy in 2012, Hill came off the bench for just one appearance, completing 10-of-13 passes for 172 yards and two touchdowns in a September loss to Tennessee. Shaun Hill is fully expected to be Matthew Stafford's backup once again this season.

Stafford has played in all 16 games in each of the last two seasons. But when Hill started 10 times in 2010, he averaged 259.8 yards per game and threw 16 touchdowns. He's well worth the $2.4M in base salary the Lions will pay him in the final year of his contract.

In 10 2010 starts for the Lions, Shaun Hill averaged 259.8 yards per game and threw 16 touchdown passes.

Hill proved he's one of the better backups around Sunday when he went 10-of-13 for 172 yards with two touchdowns in relief of Matthew Stafford (leg). As we wait for the results of Stafford's MRI, Hill is a must-add for owners. He's been in the offense for three years, has starting experience and the Lions will stick to their pass-first scheme under Hill.

Lions re-signed QB Shaun Hill to a two-year contract.

Hill visited with the Rams on Thursday, but ultimately decided to return as Matthew Stafford's backup for the third consecutive season. Financial terms are not immediately available. Hill is unlikely to match the $3.5 million Jason Campbell received from Chicago.

The Lions still hope to re-sign free agent Shaun Hill.

Matthew Stafford's backup the past two seasons is peddling his wares on the open market, but has only generated one reported visit. With third-stringer Drew Stanton scooped up by the Jets, it's unlikely Detroit will let Hill get away.

Free agent Shaun Hill will visit the Rams on Thursday.

After striking out on a pre-free agency deal with the Lions, Hill will now do his due diligence on the open market. He should land a deal that pays him like one of the league's top backups, but is unlikely to match the $3.5 million Jason Campbell wrested from the Bears Tuesday.

Free agent Shaun Hill is planning to test the open market.

Re-signing Hill was a priority for the Lions, but the sides remained "far enough apart on a new deal" late Monday that Hill has decided to gauge his value on the open market. A career backup, Hill performed well in the absence of Matthew Stafford in 2010, completing 257-of-416 passes for 2,686 yards, 16 touchdowns and 12 interceptions in parts of 11 games. He could land a deal that pays him like one of the league's upper echelon backups. If Hill walks, the Lions will likely focus on re-signing fellow free agent QB Drew Stanton.

The Lions have reportedly made re-signing free agent QB Shaun Hill a priority.

The Lions realize Hill will draw interest from "at least" three teams, including one that would perhaps offer a chance to compete for a starting job, according to the National Football Post. While Hill's preference is to stay in Detroit, the Lions are going to have to offer him a raise in the neighborhood of $3+ million per year.

The Lions have informed free agent Shaun Hill that they want to re-sign him for 2012, and the feeling is mutual.

According to the Detroit Free Press, Hill "might even take a slight discount" because he wants to stay with the organization. Hill does not appear to be interested in pursuing starting opportunities on the open market. The 32-year-old started ten games for Detroit in 2010, posting a 16:12 TD-to-INT ratio.

Impending free agent QB Shaun Hill would like to return to the Lions, but the two sides have yet to talk contract.

Turning 32 next week, this could be Hill's last opportunity to compete for a starting job on the open market. "I told myself I would decide that after this year," said Hill. "I haven't put any thought into it."

Shaun Hill was taking the first-team reps at quarterback in Wednesday's practice.

Matthew Stafford was stretching, jogging and doing some light throwing. However, Hill and Drew Stanton were running the team during skeleton drills. It certainly doesn't rule Stafford out for Sunday, but he's very questionable. Owners need to roster Hill, who averaged 259.8 yards passing and 1.6 touchdowns per game in 10 starts last season.

Lions QB Shaun Hill (back surgery) is expected to be "game ready" in 4-6 weeks.

Hill's surgery fixed a disk problem in his lower back. With the help of a pre-season injection, he played through the injury last year. Hill should be ready to go whenever training camp starts this summer.

Lions QB Shaun Hill is being limited in player-organized offseason workouts after undergoing back surgery on May 11.

Hill is doing light jogging and throwing, but he'd probably be limited to open training camp if there are camps. The 31-year-old played through a broken finger and forearm last season. He's now in a contract year, and will return as Matthew Stafford's backup. Hill proved a capable spot starter in 2010, posting a 16:12 TD-to-INT ratio with a 61.8 completion rate in 11 starts.
Tue, May 17, 2011 01:05:00 PM

Shaun Hill completed 28-of-39 passes for 258 yards with one touchdown and one interception in Sunday's win over the Vikings.

Most impressively, Hill put these numbers up without Calvin Johnson (ankle). The former Niner proved himself as one of the best backups in the league this season, completing 61.7 percent of his passes and throwing 16 touchdowns against 12 interceptions in 11 games. Hill is under contract through next season, and considering how injury-prone Matthew Stafford has proven to be, there is no way the Lions will let him go. Hill will return as the No. 2 man once again.

Coach Jim Schwartz confirmed Wednesday that Shaun Hill will be the Lions' starting quarterback in Week 17.

Drew Stanton will back up Hill, and Zac Robinson will be third string. In 12 games this season, Hill has 15 touchdowns against 11 picks and a 60.7 completion rate. It remains to be seen if he'll have the services of Calvin Johnson, who aggravated an ankle sprain in Week 16 and looks questionable.
