Rams released SS Corey Chavous.
Chavous, 33, was a three-year starter in St. Louis, but the new regime is reshaping the Rams' roster and clearing up salary cap space. The veteran is now a major liability in coverage, but he does have a promising career in broadcasting on the horizon. Fri, Feb 13, 2009 03:25:00 PM

The Rams are not expected to retain SS Corey Chavous in 2009. His release would save the team $1.2 million in salary cap space.

Chavous, who will turn 33 on Monday, would only be worth a roster spot if he redid his deal to the veteran's minimum. Though still a good locker room presence, he lost his starting job late in the year and can't cover anymore.

Rams SS Corey Chavous has lost his starting job to Todd Johnson.

Though the 33-year-old Chavous is a highly regarded defensive captain, age has sapped him of his speed. Johnson may not be the answer either, but the Rams believe his younger legs will be an improvement in coverage.

Rams SS Corey Chavous (pecs) will resume starting on Sunday.

It's not exactly great news for St. Louis. Todd Johnson wasn't an obvious liability while Chavous was out. Chavous isn't a formidable IDP option.

Rams SS Corey Chavous is not expected to play in Week 6.

Chavous, who is dealing with a strained pecs muscle, may miss another two-to-three weeks. With Jerome Carter (broken foot) and Todd Johnson (neck sprain) sidelined, Ron Bartell could start at safety against Baltimore.

Rams SS Corey Chavous (pectorals) has been ruled out for Week 5.

Jerome Carter and Todd Johnson will likely split safety duties Sunday.

Rams SS Corey Chavous (strained pec) is expected to miss Week 5.

Either Jerome Carter, who is almost solely a special teamer, or Todd Johnson will replace Chavous against Arizona. Johnson figures to start.

Rams SS Corey Chavous suffered a strained left pectoral muscle in Sunday's loss to Dallas.

Chavous hasn't been a difference maker this year, and his status for Week 5 is uncertain. Todd Johnson would figure to replace him if he sits out.

Rams strong safety Corey Chavous set a career high for tackles in 2006.

The Rams credited him with 117. Probably the best thing Chavous did for St. Louis was help O.J. Atogwe, who became a big playmaker down the stretch, albeit a bit too late. But the two will likely be starting together again in '07.

Rams S Corey Chavous left Sunday's game in the fourth quarter with an apparent shoulder injury.

He returned after a few plays.

Rams S Corey Chavous thinks the Titans will take Matt Leinart at No. 3.

Chavous has long been a student of the draft and annually makes projections. He rates Jay Cutler and Vince younger higher than Leinart but doesn't see Titans OC Norm Chow, and formerly of USC, letting his ex-understudy get away.

The Rams plan to use Corey Chavous at strong safety.

We thought he'd move to free safety at this point in his career. This helps his IDP value. Oshiomogho Atogwe will get the firstcrack at free safety.

Rams signed safety Corey Chavous to a five-year contract.

The Rams continue to go after declining veterans. Chavous is a heady player who can help coach his teammates, but paying him $6-7 million in 2006 is outrageous. He will average $4 million in the first three years of the deal. Expect him to line up at free safety.

Safety Corey Chavous is expected to visit with the Rams.

St. Louis got burned by signing aging veteran defenders last season and appear to be taking the same approach this time around.

Safety Corey Chavous is almost certain to leave the Vikings via free agency.

Baltimore is one team rumored to be interested in the veteran free safety. New England would make some sense as well.
