NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports the Seahawks are expected to cut DT Malik McDowell "in the near future."
The 35th overall pick in last year's draft, McDowell didn't play a snap as a rookie after suffering severe injuries in an offseason ATV accident. McDowell was then arrested last December for disorderly conduct in Atlanta. McDowell was a top-20 prospect on talent alone coming out of Michigan State in 2017, but fell in the draft due to off-field concerns, which now appear warranted. Apr 16 - 5:17 PM

Seahawks coach Pete Carroll didn't provide an update on 2017 second-round DT Malik McDowell's (concussion) health on Thursday.

McDowell missed his entire rookie season after suffering a "severe" concussion in an ATV accident. "Nothing new," Carroll said. "He’s got a process he is going through, we get information rarely in his case but there will be a time when you will hear more." It's a strange, concerning situation. McDowell was arrested for disorderly conduct in Atlanta in December.

Seahawks rookie DT Malik McDowell was arrested for disorderly conduct in Atlanta over the weekend.

McDowell was booked following a dispute over a bar tab outside an area nightclub. McDowell issued an apology, and coach Pete Carroll said the rookie was "remorseful." McDowell remains out indefinitely with a concussion and head injuries following an ATV accident over the summer after the draft.

Coach Pete Carroll said second-round DT Malik McDowell (concussion, head) is "not making any progress" and will not play this season.

McDowell was hurt in an ATV accident during the offseason and hasn't played a down for his new team after being taken 35th overall in April. We still don't even know the exact nature of McDowell's injuries, as the team and family have yet to publicize any info. Who knows if McDowell will ever play.

Seahawks first-round DT Malik McDowell (concussion, head) has "returned to his home in Michigan," and is without a timetable for a return.

McDowell — who is dealing with a concussion and "other head injuries" — will begin the year on the NFI list, costing him at least six games. At the request of his family, the team has been vague on the nature of his injuries, though they have disclosed McDowell did not suffer a fractured skull in his ATV accident. The odds that McDowell suits up this season seem exceedingly low.

Seahawks first-round pick Malik McDowell issued a statement saying his "facial" injuries and concussion are neither career- nor life-threatening.

"You will see me back on the field in the near future," McDowell promised. That may not be in 2017, however, according to Seahawks coach Pete Carroll. The full extent of McDowell's injuries have yet to be revealed.

Seahawks first-round DT Malik McDowell may miss his entire rookie year after an offseason ATV accident.

Coach Pete Carroll made the revelation on Sunday. The Seahawks were counting on McDowell to play a pivotal role as an interior disruptor in tandem with Michael Bennett, Jarran Reed, Ahtyba Rubin, and fellow rookie Nazair Jones. Per NFL Network's Mike Garafolo, McDowell suffered a concussion and undisclosed "facial injuries" during the pre-training camp ATV crash.

Seahawks placed first-round DT Malik McDowell on the reserve/did not report list.

McDowell was involved in a "vehicular" accident before training camp and "suffered an injury," details of which aren't known. McDowell is currently being treated by doctors in Michigan. "At this point it is important for Malik to stay at home and rest," the Seahawks said in a statement. The 35th overall pick in April's draft, McDowell was a first-round talent who slipped to the second round due to off-field and on-field effort issues.

Seahawks signed second-round DL Malik McDowell to a four-year contract.

The No. 35 overall pick, McDowell was the Seahawks' top selection. Capable of rushing the passer from any spot on the line, McDowell is ticketed for outside, sub-package work as a rookie. McDowell is a top athlete to go along with a huge frame (6'6/295), but has faced questions about his motor and work ethic.

Seahawks coach Pete Carroll said second-round pick Malik McDowell will play some defensive end.

"He played inside a lot (in college). He was over the center a lot, and he doesn’t look like that kind of player in our system to us," Carroll said. "We’ll play him at five-technique and three-technique and see how that goes." It sounds like the Seahawks think McDowell can play Michael Bennett's role in their defense. That role will not yield many snaps as long as Bennett is around, but McDowell should be able to help out as a sub-package rusher as a rookie.

Seahawks selected Michigan State DL Malik McDowell with the No. 35 overall pick of the 2017 NFL draft.

McDowell (6’6/295) made 23 starts in three seasons as a Spartan, tallying 24.5 career tackles for loss with 7.5 sacks and two forced fumbles. He was named second-team All-Big Ten by the conference’s coaches as both a sophomore and junior. A 48th-percentile SPARQ athlete with experience rushing on both the perimeter and interior, McDowell created disruption from all alignments at Michigan State. NFL scouts have ripped McDowell’s work ethic, motor, and poor pre-draft interviews, but he possesses all the physical traits of a plus NFL starter. He’s a boom-bust prospect whose ceiling is up to him and the Seahawks have succeeded with picks like this in the past.
