Former Vikings, Rams, and Redskins QB Gus Frerotte has taken the head coaching position at a St. Louis-area high school.
He was John Burroughs Prep QBs coach for the past two seasons while hoping for a call from the NFL. His retirement is now official. Frerotte, 39, finished his 15-year career with a 114:106 TD-to-INT ratio and solid 6.9 yards per attempt average, but a 45-47-1 record. A former Redskins seventh-round pick, Frerotte may be best remembered for outplaying No. 3 overall pick Heath Shuler when both were rookies in 1994. Frerotte made the Pro Bowl in 1996. Free agent Gus Frerotte is expected to finalize a contract with St. Louis by the time the Rams open their first offseason minicamp Thursday.

The Rams never poked around Byron Leftwich or Jeff Garcia, so they'll settle for the 38-year-old journeyman. Frerotte will likely get a one-year deal for about the minimum and a guaranteed No. 2 spot on the depth chart.

The Rams are trying to work out a deal with free agent Gus Frerotte, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Frerotte picked up the Vikings' offense quickly last year and would play in a similar scheme for new Rams OC Pat Shurmur. Frerotte turns 38 in July.

The Rams are interested in free agent QB Gus Frerotte as a backup to Marc Bulger.

Frerotte would likely be amenable to the idea. He's said in the past that he would seriously consider retirement unless he could play near his family in St. Louis.

Vikings released QB Gus Frerotte.

The writing was on the wall once Sage Rosenfels was acquired. Frerotte was due a $250,000 bonus on top of his $2M salary, and he wasn't going to be given a chance to start. Frerotte has talked about spending more time with his family, so he may retire unless his hometown Rams show interest. That's pretty doubtful, however, seeing as they're expected to target Jeff Garcia.

The Vikings are expected to release Gus Frerotte after they complete their acquisition of Sage Rosenfels.

Minnesota will avoid paying Frerotte $2 million. The Houston Chronicle suggests that the Texans could have immediate interest. Frerotte threw three touchdown passes in Minnesota's 28-21 win over Houston last season.

Gus Frerotte said he will return to the Vikings if he receives his $250,000 roster bonus due in March.

Frerotte made waves about retiring after he was benched for Tarvaris Jackson late in the season. He will battle for the starting job unless the Vikes come to their senses and try to upgrade the position.

Vikings coach Brad Childress said Friday that Gus Frerotte will compete for the starting quarterback job with Tarvaris Jackson if Frerotte returns for another season.

This again? Childress is reprising Lovie Smith's Groundhog Day routine where he wakes up every year with the same sad sack quarterback holding a contending team hostage. Though Childress isn't ruling out Jackson as next year's starter, we're hoping he comes to his senses in the next couple of months.

Gus Frerotte reiterated that he has earned the right to be the Vikings starting quarterback.

Frerotte posted an 8-3 record in 11 starts last season, but the Vikings can do better than a 12/15 touchdown-to-interception ratio. Frerotte simply isn't good enough to be handed anything more than a backup role.

Gus Frerotte said he may not return to the Vikings if he's not given a chance to compete to start in 2009.

Frerotte is upset about losing his job to Tarvaris Jackson late in the season, but he's simply not good enough to get the Vikings to the next level. Under contract for 2009, the 37-year-old's options are limited to retirement or asking for his release.

Gus Frerotte told Yahoo's Michael Silver following Sunday's playoff loss to Philadelphia that he felt he should've played over Tarvaris Jackson.

Probably so, but we can't go back now. "I just don’t know what to think," said Frerotte. "I felt like I should’ve been the one playing. That might sound selfish, but I think I would’ve given us the best chance to win. I’m going home to St. Louis (Monday) to be with my family and figure out where things stand, but the way things played out at the end really makes me question things."

Gus Frerotte reportedly suffered two transverse processes in his back this season. He played through the first one suffered on November 16.

The second was broken two weeks ago, but he's recovered. Frerotte reportedly is not happy with coach Brad Childress' decision making and Vikings players are grumbling that Frerotte gives them a better chance to win against the Giants Sunday. A lot is on the line for Childress in Week 17, but he's rolling with Tarvaris Jackson. It could be a make-or-break decision for his future in Minnesota.

Gus Frerotte is active for Week 16 against the Falcons, but will back up Tarvaris Jackson.

Frerotte was listed as questionable, but may see action off the bench if Jackson struggles. John David Booty is the inactive third quarterback.

Gus Frerotte (back) is officially listed as questionable for Week 16.

Don't think this means that he has a chance to start. The Vikings are committed to Tarvaris Jackson for now. Frerotte will be the active backup.

Gus Frerotte (back) was limited in Vikings practice Thursday.

Frerotte will be Tarvaris Jackson's backup against Atlanta in Week 16. Coach Brad Childress says Frerotte is healthy enough to play, but believes Jackson gives Minnesota its best chance to win. That strongly indicates that Jackson will keep the job for as long as he is successful.
