The Indianapolis Star considers Marlon Mack the "frontrunner" to lead the Colts' backfield committee.
He is, but it's by default. Mack generated just 358 yards on 93 rookie carries (3.8 YPC). Inconsistent usage and terrible blocking played a part. Mack is capable of big plays, with six of his 2017 carries going for at least 20 yards. This summer he will be competing with rookies Jordan Wilkins and Nyheim Hines as well as veteran Robert Turbin. Marlon Mack is recovering from offseason shoulder surgery.

After the draft, GM Chris Ballard revealed Mack played his entire rookie season with a torn labrum. It's unclear when the surgery took place, but it would be disappointing if Mack wanted until recently to have the operation. Ballard said he expects Mack back for training camp. Mack is penciled in atop the Colts' running back depth chart, but Robert Turbin and rookies Nyheim Hines and Jordan Wilkins will push for snaps. Mack seems likely to miss all of OTAs and minicamp.

Colts head coach Frank Reich said he's "fine with running back by committee".

Reich agreed with the IndyStar's Stephen Holder that the team doesn't have a starting running back. The Colts drafted North Carolina State RB Nyheim Hines with the No. 104 pick in this year's draft and he'll likely compete with Marlon Mack from day one given Indy's lack of depth. Mack finished with 93 carries for 358 yards (3.8 YPC) and three touchdowns, adding 21 catches for 225 yards and a fourth score his rookie season and remains a high-upside candidate in fantasy if handling a majority of the team's backfield touches.

Marlon Mack rushed seven times for 28 yards and one touchdown in the Colts' Week 17 win over the Texans.

He added two catches for 10 yards on three targets. Drafted in the fourth round in April, Mack has exceptional athleticism and flashed it at times as a rookie, but he was simply way too mistake-prone in year one and took a ton of negative-yardage plays while whiffing on blocking assignments. The coaching staff never wanted to up his usage for those reasons. Mack finishes his rookie campaign with 93 carries for 358 yards (3.8 YPC) and three touchdowns, adding 21 catches for 225 yards and a fourth score. He likely doesn't have it in him to be an every-down back, even at 5'11/220. With Frank Gore headed to free agency and possible retirement, the Colts will likely be in the market for a lead back this offseason. Mack should remain in the mix for 8-12 touches on Sundays.

Marlon Mack rushed four times for 17 yards in the Colts' Week 16 loss to the Ravens, adding two receptions for 37 additional yards.

The 54 yards from scrimmage were Mack's most in four weeks. Perhaps he will get a longer Week 17 look against the Texans.

Marlon Mack rushed six times for 14 yards in the Colts' Week 15 loss to the Broncos.

Mack failed to corral his lone target in the passing game. It was a disappointing night, as Frank Gore missed a big chunk of the first half with a knee injury. Aside from a few big plays early in the year, Mack hasn't really delivered on his theoretical upside. His 2018 role in the Colts' backfield is to be determined.
Thu, Dec 14, 2017 11:54:00 PM

Marlon Mack had seven carries for 23 yards and caught 2-of-3 targets for 21 yards in Week 14 against Buffalo.

Mack led the Colts in receiving, but had only nine touches. He had their biggest plays in both the run and pass game. With the Colts playing on Thursday night and Frank Gore coming off 36 carries, Mack should have a larger role in Week 15.
Sun, Dec 10, 2017 04:49:00 PM

Marlon Mack rushed six times for 46 yards and caught 1-of-2 targets for eight yards in the Colts' Week 13 loss to the Jaguars.

The Colts offensive line opened up some good holes for both Mack and Frank Gore. Mack showed good vision and explosiveness on a 25-yard run. Mack shouldn't be started in fantasy leagues against the Bills in Week 14.

Marlon Mack rushed four times for 11 yards and caught 2-of-2 targets for 20 yards in the Colts' Week 12 loss to the Titans.

He was out-touched 19 to 6 by Frank Gore. Mack blew a couple of costly blitz pickups before the Colts' bye week and has seen reduced playing time since. On Sunday, Mack lost a third-quarter fumble and wasn't heard from again.
Sun, Nov 26, 2017 04:14:00 PM

Marlon Mack rushed seven times for seven yards in the Colts' Week 10 loss to the Steelers, adding two receptions for 19 yards.

For the second straight week, Mack was out-snapped, out-touched and out-produced by Frank Gore. Mack is a big-play threat with the ball in his hands, but he's not getting it enough to be taken seriously as a FLEX option in fantasy. Perhaps the Colts will decide to give him a bigger workload coming off their bye in Week 12.

Marlon Mack rushed nine times for 29 yards in the Colts' Week 9 win over the Texans.

Mack had out-snapped Frank Gore each of the past two weeks, but took a backseat to his veteran backfield mate in Houston. The good news is, Mack's nine touches were still in line with what he's been seeing most of the season, and he was not out-snapped by an extreme margin (40-27). He'll continue to offer upside as an RB4/5 who could eventually take over as the Colts' touch leader.

Marlon Mack compiled 27 yards on 11 carries while securing three-of-five targets for 36 yards and a touchdown Sunday in the Colts’ Week 8 loss to the Bengals.

He was both out-touched and outplayed by veteran Frank Gore, who had his best game of the season on Sunday (101 yards from scrimmage on 20 touches). Mack’s longest run of the day went for just eight yards and he was stopped behind the line on numerous occasions. Luckily he was able to salvage the day for fantasy owners by breaking off a 24-yard touchdown on a screen pass from Jacoby Brissett late in the third quarter. Mack continues to impress with his big-play ability but consistency and workload concerns persist. He’ll be a flex possibility against the Texans in Week 9.

Marlon Mack played 32-of-67 snaps (48%) Week 7 against the Jaguars.

Frank Gore played just 22. With Robert Turbin out and the Colts down big, Mack handled much of the work in the second half and easily had the biggest snap share of his career. It was not all roses as the rookie dropped a couple passes, but he also went for 34 yards on a dump off, showcasing his big-play ability. Likely to see his role continue to grow, Mack needs to be rostered in all leagues.

Marlon Mack had five carries for 26 yards and caught 4-of-6 targets for 40 yards in Week 7 against Jacksonville.

Mack was the only bright spot for the Colts. His 66 total yards led the team, and he had the biggest play of the game on a 34-yard screen. With Indy tanking, Mack should continue to see more work going forward. Mack has a matchup with the Bengals in Week 8.
Sun, Oct 22, 2017 04:14:00 PM

Colts OC Rob Chudzinski said Marlon Mack will get more touches with Robert Turbin (elbow) out for the season.

Before Mack truthers get too excited, the coaching staff said all last week they planned to get the rookie more work before he saw two carries against the Titans. Mack almost has to see more touches with Turbin out, however, and Chudzinski said he would have gotten more carries Monday night had a few RPOs played out differently. Mack has a good matchup this week against a Jaguars defense which has given up some long runs, but he will be just a hopeful FLEX until we see him actually get the work.
