Matt Breida rushed 17 times for 101 yards and one touchdown and caught 3-of-4 targets for 31 yards and a second touchdown in the 49ers' 27-23, Week 10 loss to the Giants on Monday night.
The 20 touches marked a new season-high for Breida. After having 11 days to rest his ailing ankle between games, this was as healthy as Breida has looked since Week 3 when he suffered a knee injury only to hurt his ankle in Week 5. Breida dominated the backfield work with Raheem Mostert (arm, I.R.) out of the picture, ceding nine ineffective carries to Alfred Morris. Breida was limping at times in this one but showed way more burst than we've seen from him over the last month or so. He'll now get the Niners' bye to get fully healthy before hosting the Bucs in Week 12. Nov 12 - 11:36 PM

Date:

Matt Breida rushed for 41 yards on 12 carries and caught his lone target for three yards in the 49ers' Week 9 win over the Raiders.

Breida was able to play through his nagging ankle injury, but the 49ers pulled him in the second half with the 49ers out to a huge lead. Breida's outlook is slightly more promising with Raheem Mostert likely out for the season with a broken arm, but even if he sees a few more touches per game with Mostert out, Breida is still a low floor RB2/3 for the 49ers' Week 10 game against the Giants. Breida hasn't eclipsed 65 rushing yards in six straight games.
Nov 1 - 11:52 PM

Matt Breida (ankle) is officially active for the 49ers Week 9 game against the Raiders.

Raheem Mostert (ankle) is also suiting up, but C.J. Beathard is not. The 49ers will trot out UDFA Nick Mullens, who has not thrown a pass in the NFL before, as the starting quarterback, so expectations for the San Francisco offense need to be limited. Breida is on the RB2/3 borderline even with a good matchup tonight.
Nov 1 - 7:23 PM

ESPN's Adam Schefter reports both Matt Breida (ankle) and Raheem Mostert (ankle) are expected to be active for Thursday's game against the Raiders.

Quite literally nothing could keep Breida out of a game. The Raiders have one of the league's softest run defenses, but the 49ers' entire offense could go off the rails if second-year UDFA Nick Mullens is forced to start in C.J. Beathard's (wrist) place. Breida is on the RB2/3 borderline.
Nov 1 - 1:44 PM

Matt Breida (ankle) is questionable for Week 9 against the Raiders.

The smart thing would probably be for Breida to sit this one out, but we know he's not going to do that. Breida has struggled while playing at much less than 100 percent the past several weeks, but until the Niners tell him not to, he'll keep fighting through the pain. Even against one of the league's worst defenses, he'll be tough to trust.
Oct 31 - 5:07 PM

Matt Breida (ankle) was limited in Tuesday's practice.

Continuing to battle through an ankle sprain, Breida rushed 16 times for 42 yards last week against the Cardinals and appears ready to go back at it on a short week Thursday against the Raiders. At less than 100 percent and without his speed and agility, Breida is more of an RB3 rather than RB2.
Oct 30 - 9:49 PM

Matt Breida rushed a team-high 16 times for 42 yards in the Niners' Week 8 heartbreaking loss to the Cardinals.

Breida played through his questionable tag and was reportedly "limited" in this one, then went and out-touched Alfred Morris, Raheem Mostert, and Kyle Juszczyk by a combined 16-10. Oddly enough, none of the lot were involved in the Niners' passing game. Breida deserves credit for toughing through these last few weeks, but he still averaged only 2.6 YPC Sunday due in part to his ailing ankle. Despite leading the backfield in carries, Breida's status should be monitored given the Niners' quick turnaround in Oakland on Thursday.
Oct 28 - 8:32 PM

Matt Breida (ankle) is active in Week 8 against the Cardinals.

Breida will reportedly play "limited" snaps, though there's been no indication as to how many that'll be. He'll still start and play ahead of Raheem Mostert and Alfred Morris among the Niners' three-headed committee. Breida's workload concerns make him an extremely dicey RB3 in Week 8.
Oct 28 - 3:00 PM

According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, Matt Breida (questionable, ankle) is expected to play but will likely see limited snaps in Week 8 against the Cardinals.

It looks like Breida will give it a go after closing out the week with a full practice on Friday, though he'll likely be on a snap count. He'll form a committee role along with Raheem Mostert and veteran plodder Alfred Morris. Even in a favorable matchup, Breida's workload concerns make him a risky fantasy bet this week.

RotoGrinders.com Daily Slant: With Breida being limited, look for Raheem Mostert to see a heavier workload than usual with Alfred Morris also seeing more usage in a change-of-pace capacity. Mostert was originally shaping up to be a great value play across the DFS industry this week if Breida was inactive, but given that we aren’t sure to what degree Breida will be limited, neither he nor Mostert make for strong DFS plays due to their uncertain workloads.
Oct 28 - 8:03 AM

Matt Breida (ankle) is questionable for Week 8 against the Cardinals.

Breida was limited Friday after missing the last two days. The return to practice gives him a chance to play this week, but he's on the wrong side of questionable. Raheem Mostert would lead the 49ers in carries if Breida sits.
Oct 26 - 4:27 PM

Matt Breida (ankle) remained sidelined on Thursday.

Breida is looking more doubtful than questionable for Sunday's game against the Cardinals. That would leave Raheem Mostert, Alfred Morris and Kyle Juszczyk to form a committee against the Birds' awful run defense.
Oct 25 - 5:35 PM

Matt Breida (ankle) is not practicing Wednesday.

Coach Kyle Shanahan said Breida is doing better, however, after playing just five snaps and aggravating his sprained ankle last week against the Rams. The Niners really just need to give him some time off to get right. If Breida sits, Raheem Mostert would be the play over Alfred Morris.
Oct 24 - 3:35 PM

Matt Breida (ankle) played just five snaps Week 7 against the Rams.

Breida aggravated his ankle injury on the first carry of the game. He came back in for four more plays before limping off again at the end of the first half. With Raheem Mostert showing well, it might be time for Breida to sit out a few games to rest his troublesome ankle.
Oct 22 - 10:29 AM

Matt Breida rushed five times for 15 yards in the 49ers' Week 7 loss to the Rams.

As has become too common, Breida aggravated his ankle injury early in this game. He quickly came back after getting re-taped, but he limped off the field again during the two-minute touchdown drive at the end of the first half and did not touch the ball again. Perhaps the 49ers were just playing it safe in the blowout loss. Breida has a great matchup next week against the Cardinals, but his injury history will make him a risky play even if he is able to suit up.
Oct 21 - 8:25 PM

Matt Breida (shoulder, ankle) was removed from the Week 7 injury report.

Breida was upgraded to a full practice Friday after the 49ers managed his early-week reps. He's an RB2 for Sunday's game with the Rams.
