Matt Breida starred with 138 yards and a touchdown on 11 carries while also delivering three catches for 21 yards on four targets Sunday in the 49ers’ Week 2 win over Detroit.
As color commentator Chris Spielman put it, Breida ran angry on Sunday. Playing with an obvious chip on his shoulder, Breida brought the thunder all afternoon, pounding his way to big runs, the biggest of which came on a masterful 66-yard touchdown sprint late in the third quarter. It was a phenomenal piece of running though the Niners, in particular wide receiver Pierre Garcon, deserve huge credit for blocking his way to the end zone. Many have wondered if Breida’s size would prevent him from being an NFL workhorse but that argument is getting weaker by the day. Breida will try to keep the momentum going next week when the Niners travel to Kansas City. Sep 16 - 8:00 PM

Matt Breida rushed 11 times for 46 yards and caught 1-of-2 targets for five yards in the 49ers' Week 1 loss to the Vikings.

Breida and Alfred Morris each received 12 touches in the anticipated timeshare. Morris got the start and the important goal-line carries -- four of them from inside the five-yard line to be exact -- but Morris was unable to convert any of them and lost a fumble at the two-yard line. Breida worked most of the second half with the Niners trailing by 18 at one point. This figures to be a true split going forward, with Morris likely handling the load when the Niners have the lead and Breida getting the playing time when the 49ers are chasing points. Breida will be an RB3/4 next week against the Lions.

Matt Breida avoided structural damage in his injured shoulder.

He suffered the injury during Thursday's preseason opener against Dallas. Luckily Breida's MRI came back clean and the Niners are hopeful he'll be ready for Week 1. The second-year back could resume practicing soon, though he'll likely be limited to non-contact work. Breida will serve as a handcuff to lead back Jerick McKinnon when healthy.
Aug 10 - 3:12 PM

Matt Breida suffered a shoulder injury in the 49ers' preseason opener Thursday night.

Per coach Kyle Shanahan, Breida will be out "some time." Sophomore TE George Kittle also injured his shoulder Thursday and will be week to week. Breida played three snaps before getting hurt. By most accounts, the second-year back was having a strong camp after flashing as Carlos Hyde's change-of-pace as a rookie. Raheem Mostert and Joe Williams are next up on the depth chart.
Aug 10 - 10:25 AM

According to Grant Cohn of The Press Democrat, Matt Breida has been a standout through the first three days of training camp.

Cohn heaped praise on the second-year back, going as far as to call him the "best running back on the team." The Niners beat reporter went on to laud his consistency, noting that Breida "runs harder than everyone else." The 49ers paid Jerick McKinnon like a workhorse this offseason, though if Breida continues to impress in camp, he could play a larger role than expected. He's worth stashing as a handcuff in all fantasy formats.
Jul 29 - 9:27 AM

49ers.com's Joe Fann expects Matt Breida to have a similar workload this season.

Undrafted out of Georgia Southern, Breida surprised with 126 rookie touches even with Carlos Hyde getting 240 carries and 59 catches. Jerick McKinnon should take on most if not all of Hyde's work, but there will still be room for Breida to see touches if he can hold off the likes of Joe Williams and Jeremy McNichols.

Breida will a popular offseason name to keep tabs on this offseason with Carlos Hyde entering unrestricted free agency and Breida already establishing himself as a productive player to the San Francisco staff as a rookie. Breida’s biggest obstacle will be that he’s only 190-pounds and breaking out of a change of pace role when fellow rookie Joe Williams returns to the team this offseason.

Matt Breida rushed 11 times for 74 yards and a touchdown and caught his lone target for eight yards in the 49ers' Week 16 win over the Jaguars.

Breida wound up as the 49ers’ leading rusher in a game where Carlos Hyde struggled between the tackles. Breida’s most noteworthy play was a 30-yard game-icing touchdown to end a fourth-quarter Jaguars rally. Breida has logged double-digit touches per game more often than not over the last two months, likely cementing himself as part of the 49ers’ long-term plans at running back. We should see him get 10-plus touches in Week 17 against the Rams, as well.

Matt Breida rushed 12 times for 27 yards in the 49ers' Week 14 win over the Texans.

Breida did not show anything to justify the work, but he stole 12 carries from Carlos Hyde for the second week in a row. Despite the work, he will not be a real fantasy option next week against the Titans.

Matt Breida rushed 12 times for 45 yards and caught his lone target for a gain of four in the 49ers' Week 13 win over the Bears.

Carlos Hyde led the team with 19 touches, but Breida was heavily involved in the change-of-pace role. Unfortunately, Breida lacks standalone flex value barring an injury to Hyde. Breida is more of a Dynasty league stash.

Matt Breida rushed once for 12 yards and caught one pass for 12 yards in the 49ers' Week 12 loss to the Seahawks.

Even with Carlos Hyde struggling, Breida was relegated to change-of-pace work, seeing just one carry in the first half and touching the ball just two times all game. He is just a handcuff in deep leagues.

Matt Breida rushed nine times for 55 yards and a touchdown in the 49ers' Week 10 win over the Giants, adding a three-yard reception.

The majority of Breida's yardage came on his 33-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter, a winding affair where the G-Men didn't seem much interested in tackling. The touchdown was his first on the ground, while the carries were his second most of the season. Although coach Kyle Shanahan likes to mix Breida in, he's still miles behind starter Carlos Hyde. He won't be on the FLEX radar when the 49ers come off their bye against the Seahawks in Week 12.

Matt Breida rushed once for one yard and caught 2-of-4 targets for 18 yards in the 49ers' Week 9 loss to the Cardinals.

Breida was a non-factor in this game until Carlos Hyde was ejected late in the fourth quarter. Unless Hyde is suspended, which seems unlikely, he can be left on the waiver wire.
