Saints re-signed QB Luke McCown to a two-year, $3 million contract.
He got a $500,000 signing bonus. The deal is cheap enough that the door may be open for 2015 third-round pick Garrett Grayson to make a serious run at the Saints' backup job in training camp, which would make McCown expendable. 34-year-old McCown did hold his own in a September spot start against the Panthers last season, completing 31-of-38 passes for 310 yards in a 27-22 loss. ESPN's Field Yates reports free agent QB Luke McCown visited the Colts Thursday.

The search for a capable backup for Andrew Luck continues. After starring in an ironically apt cell phone ad, McCown played surprisingly well in a spot start against the Panthers Week 3. The Colts could do much worse behind their star quarterback. McCown will turn 35 in July.

Saints placed QB Luke McCown on injured reserve with a back injury, ending his season.

He'll undergo back surgery Tuesday. Matt Flynn takes his roster spot as the new backup. McCown turns 35 in July and will be a free agent. He might have a couple more years of clipboard duty and Verizon commercials in him.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports Luke McCown is dealing with what could be a season-ending back injury.

McCown will see a specialist on Monday. He's already been ruled out for Sunday's game against Tennessee. McCown made one start earlier this year, completing 31-of-38 passes for 310 yards in a loss to Carolina back in Week 3. With McCown's season in doubt, Garrett Grayson will slide in as the backup behind starter Drew Brees. The Saints could also look outside the organization for quarterback help.

Luke McCown completed 31-of-38 passes for 310 yards, zero touchdowns and an interception Week 3 against the Panthers.

The Panthers gave McCown all day to stand on his spot and throw, but he never really made them pay. Just five of his completions went for more than 15 yards, and one of those was a 23-yard catch by Mark Ingram on a botched Hail Mary to close out the game. McCown was efficient moving the ball down the field, but he will have to be more aggressive if he is forced to start next week against the Cowboys.

Luke McCown will start against the Panthers in Week 3.

Drew Brees was ruled out with a shoulder injury. McCown hasn't attempted a pass in the NFL since 2013. His last start came all the way back in 2011 as a member of the Jaguars. His career numbers are underwhelming to say the least. He's thrown more interceptions than touchdowns with a completion rate south of 60 percent. Even without Luke Kuechly (concussion) the Panthers are a great D/ST play this week.

Saints QB Luke McCown will get an extended look in the Saints' third preseason game.

Drew Brees is only expected to play "a handful" of snaps before ceding the reigns to McCown. The news suggests McCown is well ahead of Ryan Griffin for the team's No. 2 job. With rookie Garrett Grayson almost guaranteed a roster spot, Griffin's roster spot is in danger.

Saints re-signed QB Luke McCown to a one-year, $970,000 contract.

McCown, who will turn 34 in July, beat out Ryan Griffin for the backup job last training camp. He'll attempt to do the same this year and get $350,000 guaranteed for it. McCown has attempted one NFL pass since 2011. Drew Brees has missed one game over the last 10 seasons.

Saints re-signed QB Luke McCown to a one-year contract.

McCown, 33 in July, has attempted just one pass since 2011. He has a 2-7 career record and 68.3 passer rating. McCown was mentioned as a possible replacement for Shaun Hill as Matthew Stafford's backup in Detroit to help install OC Joe Lombardi's offense. He'll return for another year as Drew Brees' No. 2.

ESPN.com's Michael Rothstein considers the Lions a possible landing spot for free agent Luke McCown.

The Lions are looking for an experienced backup behind Matthew Stafford and McCown has ties to OC Joe Lombardi after spending last season with the Saints. Re-signing Shaun Hill is another possibility. McCown has a career 68.3 quarterback rating and should only require a veteran-minimum contract.

Luke McCown is expected to open Saints training camp taking most of the second-team reps behind Drew Brees.

McCown is trying to hold off Seneca Wallace and UDFA Ryan Griffin. Griffin has caught coach Sean Payton's eye, but is more likely a candidate for third string or the practice squad. McCown and Wallace are vying for one roster spot.

Saints signed QB Luke McCown to a one-year contract.

McCown, 32 in July, quietly spent last season as Matt Ryan's backup. As things currently stand, McCown projects to back up Drew Brees this year because they are New Orleans' only two quarterbacks on the offseason roster. Chase Daniel left for Kansas City and roster yo-yo Sean Canfield hasn't been re-signed.

Luke McCown is listed as the No. 2 quarterback on the Falcons' Week 1 depth chart.

Rookie Dominique Davis' impressive preseason earned him a roster spot, but he's going to stay in the developmental third QB role. McCown has three years of experience in Dirk Koetter's offense.

Falcons signed QB Luke McCown.

McCown has three years of experience in Dirk Koetter's offense from their time together in Jacksonville. We suspect impressive rookie Dominique Davis has sewn up the No. 2 QB job, and McCown was signed for garbage-time duties in the preseason finale. The Falcons can keep McCown on speed dial if injuries strike during the season. It doesn't hurt that he brings intel from a division rival after spending training camp with the Saints.

Saints released QB Luke McCown.

McCown was signed as insurance during Drew Brees' contract standoff, but was never likely to be kept around following Brees' extension. Sean Canfield is now competing against himself for No. 3 duties behind Brees and Chase Daniel.
