Sam Darnold (elbow) is practicing in full for Week 7 against the Vikings.
Darnold hurt his throwing elbow trying to make a tackle after throwing an interception last week, but he still got his usual reps in on Wednesday. Coming off one of his better games, Darnold will be an acceptable QB2 against Minnesota. Oct 17 - 4:58 PM

Sam Darnold completed 24-of-30 passes for 280 yards, two touchdowns, and an interception in the Jets' Week 6 win over the Colts.

With the exception of a telegraphed pick Colts FS Malik Hooker easily jumped all over, Darnold was fantastic for the second straight week. He carved up the Colts' interior defense on slant routes, took only two sacks, and made numerous plays with his feet outside the pocket. Darnold had a predictable Weeks 3-4 rough patch in road trips to Cleveland and Jacksonville, but otherwise his performance has been highly promising for the NFL's youngest-ever Week 1 starting quarterback. Darnold will be a two-QB-league play when Gang Green hosts the Vikings next.
Oct 14 - 4:53 PM

Sam Darnold completed 10-of-22 passes for 198 yards, three touchdowns, and an interception in the Jets' Week 5 win over the Broncos.

He only took one sack and three hits all game as the Jets neutralized Von Miller and leaned on their running game on a career day for Isaiah Crowell. Darnold was terrific in his own right, though, finding Robby Anderson in stride on a 76-yard touchdown bomb, then showing pinpoint ball placement on Anderson's 35-yard score and Terrelle Pryor's 20-yard TD. Darnold has struggled in tough matchups, unsurprising for a rookie. He got a favorable one Sunday against Denver's overrated pass defense, and draws an above-average one at home against the Colts in Week 6.
Oct 7 - 6:01 PM

Sam Darnold completed 17-of-34 passes for 167 yards and a touchdown in Week 4 against the Jaguars.

It's another rough game for Darnold after throwing two interceptions last week. Darnold managed to salvage his game with a late touchdown to Jordan Leggett, but the Jets offense continued to struggle. Darnold has went through some expected early-season growing pains, failing to throw multiple touchdowns since the season opener. He'll have another dificult matchup in Week 5 against the Broncis.
Sep 30 - 4:30 PM

Sam Darnold completed 15-of-31 passes for 169 yards, zero touchdowns and two interceptions in New York's 21-17, Week 3 loss to the Browns.

Whereas Baker Mayfield stole the show, Darnold stunk up the joint. He might as well have had "rookie" tattooed on his forehead. For their part, the Jets were terrified of Darnold making a mistake, calling a horizontal passing offense. It resulted in some nice catch-and-runs for Quincy Enunwa but severely capped the Jets' point ceiling for the evening. Of course, Darnold proved the Jets' caution correct when he immediately tossed a pair of late-game picks when forced into comeback mode. Darnold has now turned in back-to-back unimpressive performances after his Week 1 throttling of the Lions. He has 10 days to review tape before a foreboding Week 4 matchup with the Jaguars.
Sep 20 - 11:35 PM

Sam Darnold completed 25-of-41 passes for 334 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions in the Jets' Week 2 loss to the Dolphins.

Darnold averaged over eight yards per attempt for the second straight week, but his two picks were costly in a one-score game. The second wasn't necessarily Darnold's fault; Terrelle Pryor appeared to cut off his route in the back of the end zone, allowing Xavien Howard to catch it. Darnold also missed a would-be game-changing play when he overthrew wide-open Quincy Enunwa in the back of the end zone in the second half. Darnold will be a QB2 when the Jets visit Cleveland on Thursday Night Football in Week 3.
Sep 16 - 5:52 PM

Making his NFL debut, Sam Darnold completed 16-of-21 passes for 198 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception in the Jets' 48-17, Week 1 win over the Lions.

Darnold, the youngest starting quarterback in the Super Bowl era, started off about as miserably as one could, having his first pass of the game picked off and returned for a touchdown by S Quandre Diggs. But the rookie had nowhere to go but up from that point, and up he went. Darnold showed the poise of a 10-year veteran and bounced back with a 21-yard touchdown to Quincy Enunwa and a perfect deep ball to Robby Anderson for another score from 41 yards out. Darnold and Enunwa had a real connection, with Enunwa seeing a team-high 10 targets. (The next closes Jet had three.) Darnold should pick up right where he left off at home in Week 2 against Miami.
Sep 10 - 10:30 PM

Jets will reportedly name rookie Sam Darnold as their starting quarterback.

It's no surprise given coach Todd Bowles' recent "any rookie can only get better by playing" statement. Darnold impressed in the preseason, showing veteran-like poise and completing 29-of-45 passes for 244 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception. With Teddy Bridgewater traded to the Saints, veteran Josh McCown will backup and guide New York's No. 3 overall pick throughout his rookie season.
Sep 3 - 2:46 PM

Jets coach Todd Bowles said Sam Darnold "rarely makes the same mistake twice."

"Any rookie can only get better by playing," Bowles continued, "so we’re pleased with the progress he’s making week-by-week. That’s been exciting." Darnold has impressed so far in the preseason, and it sounds like he has been doing just as well during training camp. With Teddy Bridgewater traded to the Saints, it would be a shock if Darnold is not under center Week 1.

Aug 30 - 10:15 AM

Sam Darnold completed 8-of-16 passes for 86 yards and a touchdown in Friday's preseason game against the Giants.

The No. 2 overall pick and presumptive Jets starter closes the book on the preseason having gone 29-of-45 (64.4 percent) for 244 yards (5.42 YPA), two touchdowns and one interception. He wasn't particularly crisp against the G-Men, taking an intentional grounding penalty. Darnold should make plenty of big plays as a rookie, but also take sacks and commit turnovers. He will be strictly a streamer in fantasy leagues.
Aug 24 - 10:09 PM

According to ESPN's Josina Anderson, Jets first-round QB Sam Darnold is expected to start and play at least the first half of Friday's third preseason game against the Giants.

That's been the expectation all along as Darnold has quickly moved ahead of Teddy Bridgewater and Josh McCown on the team's QB depth chart. Bridgewater will be next up after Darnold as the Jets look to showcase him for a possible trade. Per Anderson, all three quarterbacks are still "in contention" to start Week 1, though all signs point to the rookie out of USC getting the nod.
Aug 24 - 2:22 PM

According to ESPN Jets reporter Rich Cimini, first-round QB Sam Darnold is "trending toward" starting Week 1 against the Lions.

Darnold continues to see the bulk of New York's first-team practice reps and will likely draw the start in Friday's regular season dress rehearsal against the Giants, just as he did last week against the Redskins. Selected third overall in April's draft, Darnold has impressed since ending his contract holdout last month. All signs point to the 21-year-old getting the nod in Week 1.
Aug 19 - 12:50 PM

Sam Darnold completed 8-of-11 passes for 62 yards and an interception in the Jets' second preseason game.

It was a less impressive performance from the rookie than his debut. He struggled a bit with pressure, taking two sacks including a drive-ender in which he held the ball too long, and he was intercepted on a fourth-down play in which he appeared to pre-determine his target and forced the ball into double coverage. He was not helped much by his offensive line, however, and still had a couple nice third-down conversions to Tre McBride. It was a step back, but Darnold still should be the heavy favorite to start Week 1.
Aug 16 - 9:42 PM

The New York Daily News' Manish Mehta believes "it’d be an upset" if Sam Darnold does not start Week 1.

"Barring deer-in-the-headlights moments over the next couple weeks," Mehta writes. "The brain trust is happier with this kid with each passing day." Coming off an outstanding debut, Darnold received the bulk of the first-team reps this week and is expected to start the second preseason game on Thursday night. Josh McCown and Teddy Bridgewater are solid options, but the Jets have to start Darnold if he proves ready.
Aug 16 - 10:49 AM

Sam Darnold received the "bulk" of the Jets' first-team reps for the second-straight day on Monday.

Signs are pointing toward Darnold starting the Jets' second preseason game on Thursday after his promising showing in Friday's opener. Josh McCown and Teddy Bridgewater have both drawn praise for their work in camp, but any time you are the No. 3 overall pick, you are on the fast track to starting duties.
