Sam Darnold completed 8-of-11 passes for 62 yards and an interception in the Jets' second preseason game.
It was a less impressive performance from the rookie than his debut. He struggled a bit with pressure, taking two sacks including a drive-ender in which he held the ball too long, and he was intercepted on a fourth-down play in which he appeared to pre-determine his target and forced the ball into double coverage. He was not helped much by his offensive line, however, and still had a couple nice third-down conversions to Tre McBride. It was a step back, but Darnold still should be the heavy favorite to start Week 1. Aug 16 - 9:42 PM

The New York Daily News' Manish Mehta believes "it’d be an upset" if Sam Darnold does not start Week 1.

"Barring deer-in-the-headlights moments over the next couple weeks," Mehta writes. "The brain trust is happier with this kid with each passing day." Coming off an outstanding debut, Darnold received the bulk of the first-team reps this week and is expected to start the second preseason game on Thursday night. Josh McCown and Teddy Bridgewater are solid options, but the Jets have to start Darnold if he proves ready.

Sam Darnold received the "bulk" of the Jets' first-team reps for the second-straight day on Monday.

Signs are pointing toward Darnold starting the Jets' second preseason game on Thursday after his promising showing in Friday's opener. Josh McCown and Teddy Bridgewater have both drawn praise for their work in camp, but any time you are the No. 3 overall pick, you are on the fast track to starting duties.

Sam Darnold received a majority of reps at camp Sunday.

Darnold's late start to camp seems like a thing of the past following his stellar debut (13-of-18 for 96 yards and one score) in the Jets' preseason opener. He was the third play-caller to take the field Friday, but received more practice reps than either Josh McCown or Teddy Bridgewater Sunday. His playing time against Washington Thursday could be a nod to where he stands as New York's Week 1 starter.
Aug 12 - 3:41 PM

Sam Darnold completed 13-of-18 passes for 96 yards and a touchdown while adding eight rushing yards on two carries Friday in the Jets’ preseason opener against the Falcons.

Darnold entered with 8:41 remaining in the second quarter and led the offense for the remainder of the night. He was the third Jets signal-caller to see the field following brief stints by starter Josh McCown and Teddy Bridgewater. The rookie shined in his debut, particularly in the first half when he completed 9-of-11 passes for 74 yards and a touchdown. He closed the first half with a 14-yard strike to Charles Johnson on a beautifully-thrown pass to the corner of the end zone. Johnson should have scored two plays earlier on first-and-goal but dropped a screen pass that would have gone for an easy touchdown. Darnold nicked his left hand on a first-half scramble but was able to play through it. He wasn’t as effective in the second half—the Jets had a big lead and mostly ran the ball—but it was still an encouraging debut for Darnold, especially considering his late arrival at training camp. The 21-year-old’s next test will come Thursday against the Redskins.
Aug 10 - 10:31 PM

ESPN's Adam Schefter reports No. 3 overall pick Sam Darnold "has a very fair shot" to be the Week 1 starter.

Darnold got a late start to training camp because of a contract dispute, but that will not stop the rookie from making a real push for the starting job. Josh McCown is currently the No. 1, and Teddy Bridgewater has the talent to push for the starting job, as well. If he is even competent in the preseason, however, Darnold should get the nod.
Aug 6 - 8:08 AM

Jets coach Todd Bowles said Sam Darnold is currently the No. 3 quarterback.

Darnold did get some first-team reps in his first practice of training camp on Monday, but he is still behind Josh McCown and Teddy Bridgewater in the pecking order. "The competition has been underway, it didn't just start today, it started on Thursday when we reported for camp," Bowles said. "[Darnold] has got some work to catch up and do, so throughout the course of preseason that will take care of itself and we'll go from there." Despite his position on the depth chart right now, there is a good chance Darnold opens the season under center.
Jul 31 - 9:10 AM

Sam Darnold received some first-team reps after reporting to training camp on Monday.

Darnold was third up in the rotation after Josh McCown and Teddy Bridgewater, but it is notable nonetheless. The Jets are not going to punish the future of the franchise for being a few days tardy to camp. The Jets' quarterback situation seems genuinely uncertain, but it is never a surprise when a top-three quarterback is a Week 1 starter.
Jul 30 - 3:20 PM

Jets signed No. 3 overall pick Sam Darnold to a four-year, $30.25 million contract.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reports the deal is expected to be signed on Monday, which is good enough for us to make it official. Like all first-round deals, the contract includes a team option for a fifth year. The deal has $20 million in guarantees. Now signed, Darnold can get to work at training camp.
Jul 30 - 12:54 PM

ESPN's Rich Cimini reports the major issue between the Jets and Sam Darnold is a default language pertaining to guaranteed money in his contract.

Under the Jets' proposal, the entirety of Darnold's $30 million guarantee will void if he's fined by the league for discipline or conduct. In the case of rookies Baker Mayfield and Josh Allen, league discipline would merely result in a suspension, not a fine. Cimini cites that in the last 10 drafts, no top-3 pick had voidables tied to league fines. It would still be a surprise if Darnold is not under center when the season starts.
Jul 29 - 3:31 PM

ESPN's Rich Cimini writes the Jets' quarterback competition is Sam Darnold's to win.

Darnold has yet to sign his rookie deal and report to camp, but that should be taken care of in the next couple days. Once he is there, Darnold should be given every opportunity to win the Week 1 job. It would be a small surprise if he is not under center when the season starts.

Jul 26 - 10:27 AM

Sam Darnold did not report for training camp with the Jets' other rookies on Tuesday.

Darnold's deal still isn't done, and he's not signing a waiver to get out there as the final details are hammered out. It's not ideal, but Darnold should put pen to paper in the very near future. He's not going to miss a meaningful amount of time.
Jul 24 - 2:11 PM

Jets coach Todd Bowles said No. 3 overall pick Sam Darnold will open training camp No. 3 on the depth chart behind Josh McCown and Teddy Bridgewater.

Unsurprisingly, Josh McCown will be with the 1s, but it will be Teddy Bridgewater with the 2s following an impressive offseason program. OC Jeremy Bates has said Darnold will be given an opportunity to win the starting job in camp, but McCown is probably the favorite to be under center in Week 1 before Darnold ultimately, perhaps quickly, replacing him.
Jun 14 - 3:19 PM

Jets OC Jeremy Bates said at minicamp Wednesday that Sam Darnold is in the running to start Week 1.

It's hardly a groundbreaking idea for a team to start the No. 3 pick in the draft in Week 1, but the Jets have viable alternatives in Josh McCown and Teddy Bridgewater. This is a different approach from the Browns, who have promised to start Tyrod Taylor over Baker Mayfield. "Are we giving him bits and pieces of the offense or are we throwing everything at him? We’re throwing everything at him," said Bates. "If he can handle it, if he can prove that he’s the starter, then that will take place when the time comes."
Jun 13 - 2:30 PM

Sam Darnold could open the season as the Jets' third-string quarterback.

This would only happen if the Jets keep Teddy Bridgewater. The Jets want Darnold to develop and could make him a weekly inactive until he's ready to start. The youngest quarterback in the league, Darnold may follow the same rookie-year track as Jared Goff.
