Jets coach Todd Bowles said No. 3 overall pick Sam Darnold will open training camp No. 3 on the depth chart behind Josh McCown and Teddy Bridgewater.
Unsurprisingly, Josh McCown will be with the 1s, but it will be Teddy Bridgewater with the 2s following an impressive offseason program. OC Jeremy Bates has said Darnold will be given an opportunity to win the starting job in camp, but McCown is probably the favorite to be under center in Week 1 before Darnold ultimately, perhaps quickly, replacing him. Jets OC Jeremy Bates said at minicamp Wednesday that Sam Darnold is in the running to start Week 1.

It's hardly a groundbreaking idea for a team to start the No. 3 pick in the draft in Week 1, but the Jets have viable alternatives in Josh McCown and Teddy Bridgewater. This is a different approach from the Browns, who have promised to start Tyrod Taylor over Baker Mayfield. "Are we giving him bits and pieces of the offense or are we throwing everything at him? We’re throwing everything at him," said Bates. "If he can handle it, if he can prove that he’s the starter, then that will take place when the time comes."

Sam Darnold could open the season as the Jets' third-string quarterback.

This would only happen if the Jets keep Teddy Bridgewater. The Jets want Darnold to develop and could make him a weekly inactive until he's ready to start. The youngest quarterback in the league, Darnold may follow the same rookie-year track as Jared Goff.

ESPN's Rich Cimini predicts Josh McCown opens the season as the Jets' starting quarterback.

Unless No. 3 overall pick Sam Darnold dominates during training camp and the preseason, it makes sense for the Jets to give him some time to develop. Not even 21 yet, Darnold would be the second-youngest quarterback to start an NFL game since the merger if he is given the reins Week 1, and he turned the ball over 22 times his final season at USC. Darnold should take over the job at some point this season -- Cimini predicts by Halloween -- but he may have to sit for a month or two.

Jets coach Todd Bowles left open the possibility that first-round rookie Sam Darnold could win the starting quarterback job in training camp.

Bowles confirmed that veteran Josh McCown remains the team's starter but said Darnold could change that if he outperforms McCown during training camp. Darnold was drafted to be the Jets' franchise quarterback but would be the youngest starter in league history if he gets the nod in Week 1. Coming off an erratic sophomore season at USC (13 interceptions), it might be better for Darnold's long-term development if he spends his rookie year learning from McCown, who has been in the league since 2002.
May 4 - 3:24 PM

Jets selected USC QB Sam Darnold with the No. 3 overall pick in the 2018 NFL draft.

Darnold (6’3/221) turned pro as a redshirt sophomore after making 24 starts for the Trojans, going 20-4 and completing 64.9% of his throws with a 57:22 TD-to-INT ratio at 8.5 yards per attempt. A gunslinger cross between Matthew Stafford and Tony Romo, Darnold’s biggest college drawback was his turnover tendency, throwing 13 picks with nine lost fumbles in 2017. Darnold has an elongated release and shoddy footwork, and would be the youngest starting quarterback in league history if he gets the Week 1 nod. Long term, Darnold is a higher-variance prospect with top-ten quarterback upside. Considering Josh McCown's injury history, Darnold should see the field at some point in year one.

Sam Darnold went No. 1 to the Browns in NFL Network draft analyst Mike Mayock's 2018 Mock Draft.

Mayock has the highest Mock Draft accuracy score among all "big media" draft analysts over the last five years. Mayock releases just one mock each draft season, and this year's came out Wednesday night. Mayock has the Giants taking Saquon Barkley at No. 2, the Jets taking Baker Mayfield at 3, the Browns taking Bradley Chubb at 4, and the Broncos grabbing Quenton Nelson at No. 5. Mayock then has the Bills trading up to draft Josh Allen at No. 6.

According to the Cleveland Plain Dealer's Mary Kay Cabot, the Browns "have cooled" on USC QB Sam Darnold "in recent days."

Many in the national media have pegged Darnold as the top choice for the Browns for much of the draft season, but word out of Cleveland is the Browns have "narrowed" it down to Baker Mayfield or Josh Allen at No. 1 overall. Darnold is widely considered the best overall passing prospect in this class, but the Browns front office has many Mayfield supporters, and the perceived upside of Allen is a big draw. If Cleveland passes on Darnold, teams will be scurrying to take him.

MMQB's Albert Breer reports USC QB Sam Darnold has a visit scheduled with the Jets.

Just a couple weeks ago, Breer noted the Jets had yet to schedule a visit with Darnold, suggesting they did not expect him to still be available at No. 3 overall, but now they will bring him in for a look. The Giants reportedly will not let Darnold slip past them if he is available, but this is lying season.
Apr 10 - 8:58 AM

An "NFL talent evaluator" told NJ Advance Media's Matt Lombardo the Giants will select USC QB Sam Darnold if he is available at No. 2 overall.

This has been the buzz for several weeks. Unfortunately for the Giants, the Browns are also reportedly smitten with Darnold, meaning they need a Plan B. According to Lombardo's source, that plan does not involve a different quarterback. "Their top three choices are Darnold, [Penn State RB] Saquon Barkley, and [NC State EDGE] Bradley Chubb," the evaluator said. "They are debating Barkley vs. Chubb because they need an edge rusher but the scouts love Barkley." Both Barkley and Chubb have visited the Giants in the last week.
Apr 9 - 9:27 AM

USC QB Sam Darnold worked out for the Broncos in Los Angeles on Friday.

GM John Elway and head coach Vance Joseph were both on hand for the workout. Even after signing Case Keenum, Denver is fully expected to draft a quarterback in Round 1. The Broncos hold the No. 5 pick and will likely have to trade up to have any shot at landing Darnold.
Apr 6 - 1:38 PM

MMQB's Albert Breer reports the Jets are not currently scheduled to work out USC QB Sam Darnold.

Breer reports the Jets have already worked out UCLA QB Josh Rosen and Oklahoma QB Baker Mayfield, and they will host a workout with Wyoming QB Josh Allen this week. As Breer points out, Darnold's exclusion from the list suggests the Jets firmly expect him to come off the board in the first two picks. The Browns are widely expected to select Darnold at No. 1, and if they do not, reports suggest the Giants would not pass on him at No. 2.

According to ESPN Giants reporter Jordan Raanan, USC's Sam Darnold is the only quarterback the Giants would take at the No. 2 overall pick.

It sounds like the Giants' scouting grades on Josh Rosen, Baker Mayfield, and Josh Allen simply aren't high enough for GM Dave Gettleman to consider picking one of the non-Darnold quarterbacks at No. 2. Gettleman has a history of drafting running backs high -- he took Christian McCaffrey eighth overall in Carolina last year -- and he never traded down in any round of the draft during four seasons as Panthers GM. Barring Gettleman disregarding his scouts or reversing course on his historical anti-trade-down stance, Penn State RB Saquon Barkley and NC State DE/OLB Bradley Chubb appear to be co-favorites to go at No. 2.
Mar 23 - 1:34 PM

According to ESPN's Jeff Darlington, the "overwhelming sense" at USC QB Sam Darnold's Wednesday Pro Day was that Darnold will be the No. 1 overall pick in April's draft.

All reports were positive on Darnold's Wednesday performance in front of execs and scouts, and the general feeling coming out of the Combine was Darnold is the Browns' top target. In addition to coach Hue Jackson and new GM John Dorsey, owner Jimmy Haslam attended Darnold's Pro Day and took notes in the stands. A gunslinger whose technique needs polish, Darnold blends similar skills of Matthew Stafford and Tony Romo. After acquiring Tyrod Taylor, the Browns would have the luxury of sitting Darnold for most if not all of his first year.
Mar 21 - 8:35 PM

USC QB Sam Darnold said he has no plans to change his throwing motion.

Some scouts have critiqued his long throwing motion but Darnold isn't worried about his mechanics. "The motion I have is what got me to this point, and I really haven’t gotten into trouble with it," said Darnold. "My throwing motion is fine." Darnold is at the Combine but won't throw until his Pro Day at USC. Josh Norris had Darnold going to Cleveland with the first overall pick in his latest mock draft.
