The Dolphins and Chiefs won coin flips over the Panthers and Seahawks respectively, officially setting the 2012 draft order.
The NFL now uses a coin with the respective team's logo on each side to avoid a controversy like the one involving Jerome Bettis back in 1998. The new Top-12 is as follows: 1. Colts, 2. Rams, 3. Vikings, 4. Browns, 5. Buccaneers, 6. Redskins, 7. Jaguars, 8. Dolphins, 9. Panthers, 10. Bills, 11. Chiefs, 12. Seahawks. Feb 24 - 8:25 AM

Dolphins coach Joe Philbin said Friday that he will "absolutely" make significant use of the no-huddle offense.

"We want to create mismatches with our formations, our motion, our shifting," Philbin said. "We want to play fast and make the defense adjust." Philbin added that the Dolphins will practice the no-huddle during offseason workouts, and that he has no qualms with new coordinator Mike Sherman calling plays. It's worth noting that free agent Matt Flynn often played in shotgun no-huddle formations during his spot appearances with the Packers.

Dolphins agreed to terms with Mike Sherman as offensive coordinator and Kevin Coyle as defensive coordinator.

Sherman won three division titles as Packers head coach from 2000-2005, breaking the franchise record for rushing in 2003 and for passing in 2004. Sherman has used the West Coast offense at every coaching stop and figures to be the primary play-caller in Miami. Texas A&M prospect Ryan Tannehill, widely considered the third-best QB in the draft, played under Sherman and could be an option for the Dolphins in April. A coaching veteran of 35 years, Coyle is expected to bring a 4-3 scheme to the defense.

The Miami Herald reports former Texas A&M coach Mike Sherman and Bengals DBs coach Kevin Coyle will be hired as the Dolphins offensive and defensive coordinators respectively, "barring any unexpected last-minute issues."

Neither coach has a contract yet, but the interest is mutual between head coach Joe Philbin and both prospective assistants. Sherman first brought Philbin to the Packers back in 2003, and Coyle has been a mutual friend for years. Coyle is expected to switch to a 4-3 defense. Sherman is now out of the running for the Bucs coordinator job.
Jan 26 - 8:40 PM

The Miami Herald confirms that the Dolphins are "hoping" to hire Mike Sherman as offensive coordinator.

The deal is not done yet, but Sherman is in Davie Thursday visiting with coach Joe Philbin, and "the prospects of this working are good," according to columnist Armando Salguero. Sherman was Philbin's English teacher in prep school. Philbin also worked under Sherman as an assistant with the Packers.
Jan 26 - 11:47 AM

The Dolphins are meeting with former Texas A&M coach Mike Sherman in regard to their offensive coordinator job on Thursday.

We suppose Sherman would make sense in Miami because he'd have less say under offensive-minded head coach Joe Philbin. The two also have a working relationship and run the same West Coast-style offense. If the Dolphins acquire Peyton Manning, Sherman's impact would likely be even further reduced.
Jan 26 - 10:45 AM

According to the South Florida Sun-Sentinel, new Dolphins coach Joe Philbin understands Packers coaches are "off limits" as he puts together his own staff in Miami.

Two Packers sources confirm it's "common knowledge" that coaches and executives who leave for other opportunities are instructed to leave the Green Bay staff alone. The organization considers itself a family rather than just a football franchise. "Joe's going to be building the core of his staff from outside," one source explained, though exceptions can be made if a low-level assistant's job is "significantly increased." Packers TEs coach Ben McAdoo was said to be a fallback option to Mike Sherman at offensive coordinator.
Jan 24 - 3:43 PM

The Miami Herald has confirmed former Texas A&M coach Mike Sherman is a candidate for the Dolphins' offensive-coordinator vacancy.

Packers TEs coach Ben McAdoo is reportedly a fallback option should Sherman land the Bucs' head-coaching job. The Dolphins have yet to officially fire holdover OC Brian Daboll, but he is not believed to be under consideration for a spot on Joe Philbin's staff.
Jan 24 - 9:45 AM

New Dolphins head coach Joe Philbin is not expected to retain secondary coach Todd Bowles.

Initial speculation after Philbin's hiring was that ownership wanted Bowles promoted to defensive coordinator, but the Miami Herald reports that he doesn't expect to return in any capacity. Philbin is expected to focus on Packers assistants when filling out his staff. Safeties coach Darren Perry and cornerbacks coach Joe Whitt come to mind as coordinator candidates.
Jan 23 - 6:10 PM

The Palm Beach Post expects new Dolphins coach Joe Philbin to give a "serious look" at hiring former Packers coach Mike Sherman as his offensive coordinator.

Sherman was who hired Philbin in Green Bay, making him an assistant offensive line coach in 2003. The two are apparently close friends, and coached together as far back as the late 1970s. Sherman is also under consideration for the head-coaching job in Tampa Bay, but landing in Miami seems far more likely.
Jan 22 - 12:12 PM

Speaking at new head coach Joe Philbin's introductory press conference, Dolphins GM Jeff Ireland insisted Philbin will have final say on hiring his coaching staff.

Ireland was responding to scuttlebutt that Broncos OC Mike McCoy was passed up for the Dolphins' top job because he didn't want DBs coach Todd Bowles as his defensive coordinator. The Dolphins have vehemently denied the report. The truth should arrive in the form of Philbin's choice to lead his defense.
Jan 21 - 4:56 PM

Dolphins hired former Packers offensive coordinator Joe Philbin as head coach.

Broncos OC Mike McCoy overplayed his hand and may now be stuck for another year with Tim Tebow. Philbin was owner Stephen Ross' preferred option, and the man with the money usually gets his way. Philbin, 50, was Green Bay's offensive coordinator from 2007 through 2011. While he was second in command to offensive-minded HC Mike McCarthy, Philbin helped engineer a unit that never ranked worse than ninth in total offense during that span. Philbin runs a West Coast scheme and may attempt to lure free agent Matt Flynn to Miami. Brandon Marshall flourished in a similar offense under Mike Shanahan in Denver, so he'll know the terminology. We like the hire for the Dolphins' skill players.
Jan 20 - 6:30 PM

NFL Network's Jason LaCanfora confirms Broncos OC Mike McCoy is the favorite for the Dolphins' head coaching job.

McCoy was "very impressive" in his second interview, meeting with owner Steve Ross, GM Jeff Ireland and team consultant Carl Peterson for eight hours on Thursday. The South Florida Sun-Sentinel has reported that the Dolphins' announcement is expected on Friday.

Jan 20 - 9:32 AM

The Dolphins coaching search is down to a two-horse race between Broncos OC Mike McCoy and Packers OC Joe Philbin, according to the Miami Herald.

Interim coach Todd Bowles is a fallback option if owner Stephen Ross "cannot decide between Philbin and McCoy." If it was any other front office, we'd be shocked at that line of reasoning. McCoy is reportedly GM Jeff Ireland's man, though Ross "also thinks very highly of Philbin." Bowles remained in the mix until the end because "his presentation to Ross, Ireland and consultant Carl Peterson was impressive." The Dolphins' decision is expected to be announced on Friday.
Jan 19 - 10:45 PM

According to the South Florida Sun-Sentinel, the Dolphins are expected to announce their new head coach on Friday.

Joe Philbin and Todd Bowles sat down with the team's brass on Wednesday, with Mike McCoy wrapping up the second round of interviews on Thursday. The Dolphins refuted a report that there's a leader in the clubhouse, though we suspect McCoy is still the man to beat for the "next Don Shula," as owner Stephen Ross put it.
