Ravens coach John Harbaugh mentioned Fred Smoot when discussing possible free agent cornerbacks who could land in Baltimore.
The Ravens are desperate for CBs help after losing Domonique Foxworth to a torn ACL, but they're not going to find much of it on the open market. Smoot's name recently appeared on a UFL roster. Harbaugh also mentioned former Raven Frank Walker, and free agent cornerback/safety Anthony Henry. Fri, Jul 30, 2010 09:04:00 PM

Redskins released CB Fred Smoot.

Smoot has been in decline for a couple of years now, so his release isn't a surprise considering the $3.9M he scheduled to earn. Turning 31 in April, Smoot will have to settle for a nickel or dime role in free agency.

Fred Smoot left Sunday's game against the Eagles with a head injury and is questionable to return.

This is getting really hairy for the Redskins' secondary. The only healthy corners are Carlos Rogers, Bryon Westbrook and Kevin Barnes. The latter two are mainly special teams players.

Fred Smoot is starting in place of Carlos Rogers for the Redskins Sunday.

Rogers was benched last week after getting torched on a double move by Brandon Marshall. He's apparently still in the doghouse. Rogers is much more talented than the declining Smoot, so upgrade the Cowboys' passing game slightly.

Redskins declared CB Fred Smoot, CB Kevin Barnes, OL Edwin Williams, LB Robert Henson, OL Chad Rinehart, OT D'Anthony Batiste, DT Anthony Montgomery, and DE Renaldo Wynn inactive for Week 2.

Smoot and Montgomery are both banged up, but neither loss is major. The Skins did a surprisingly good job of staying healthy during training camp.

Redskins CB Fred Smoot (rib) has been downgraded to questionable for Sunday's game against the Rams.

Not a huge deal for the 'Skins defense. Carlos Rogers will be on Donnie Avery while DeAngelo Hall will deal with Laurent Robinson. We still like the Redskins as a spot start for your fantasy defense.

The Redskins have been giving CB Fred Smoot reps at free safety during training camp.

Smoot would be a very undersized safety at 5'11/192, so we doubt he'd be an option to move there full time down the line. The Skins must not have much faith in LaRon Landry's usual backup, second-year man Kareem Moore.

Incoming third-round CB Kevin Barnes called out Fred Smoot for "getting a little bit older" during post-draft interviews.

Sounds like fighting words from the rook'. "They come in like that until they go to three days of (minicamp), and (then) they humble," Smoot responded. "I don't even know his name, and I love football, so that tells you (something). I know who's going to get drafted where. I didn't know the kid."

Redskins nickel corner Fred Smoot (groin) is not expected to play in Week 7 against the Browns.

If Cleveland had a viable third receiver this would be a possible matchup boost. Leigh Torrence will have to operate as the Skins' nickel Sunday.

The hip injury Fred Smoot suffered during Thursday's game against the Giants is not considered serious.

Smoot called it a bruised hip bone or hip pointer and said he "should be good" for Week 2 against the Saints.

Redskins CB Fred Smoot left Thursday's game against the Giants in the third quarter with a hip pointer.

His return is questionable. Smoot may just sit in the corner of the locker room and think about what he did after Plaxico Burress abused him throughout the first half.

Redskins CB Fred Smoot was carted off the field due to what's believed to be cramping in the third quarter Thursday night.

Smoot was in so much pain that he couldn't make it to the bench, but was able to return for the Bears' final drive. The injury clearly wasn't a big deal.

Fred Smoot reinjured his hamstring in Week 9 and will be evaluated on Wednesday.

The injury flared up in the fourth quarter, but Smoot stayed in for the short handed Redskins, who lost Carlos Rogers for the year in Week 8. CB Leigh Torrance would likely get the start if Smoot cannot play against the Eagles.

Redskins CB Fred Smoot practiced for a second straight day.

Smoot was a late scratch in Week 8 due to a lingering hamstring injury, but the Redskins need him back following Carlos Rogers' season-ending knee injury. He will start if active. G Mike Pucillo sat out practice after he strained his back during Wednesday's session.

Redskins declared CB Fred Smoot, RB Rock Cartwright, Mark Brunell, RB Rock Cartwright, DT Ryan Boschetti, OL Stephon Hoyer, OG Rick DeMulling, OG Randy Thomas, and WR Reche Caldwell inactive for Week 8.

Losing Smoot is a surprise and a blow to the Washington secondary on a day they need all hands on deck.
