Patriots released OG Brian Waters.
Officially, his contract was terminated from the reserve/did not report list. Waters didn't want to play for the Patriots last season, but they refused to play ball after he declined a raise, holding him hostage as his contract tolled to 2013. The Pats could have kept tolling Waters' deal in perpetuity, but decided they got their point across. The longtime Chief wanted to play closer to his Texas home last season. Waters is a six-time Pro Bowler — including in 2011 — but is now 36 and hasn't played since the 2012 Super Bowl. It's unclear if he has any interest in reviving his career. Apr 30 - 5:20 PM

AWOL Patriots G Brian Waters' 2012 contract has officially tolled to 2013, but ESPN Boston considers it unlikely Waters plays for the Pats "ever again."

And by extension, football, since the Pats have thus far proved unwilling to trade Waters or relinquish his rights. It's possible the Pats will have a change of heart after making Waters sit out in 2012, but there would be little-to-no trade interest in a soon-to-be 36-year-old guard who hasn't played a down of football in over a year.

AWOL Patriots G Brian Waters didn't report to the team by Friday's deadline.

Waters is now ineligible to play this season, while his $1.4 million 2012 salary will "toll" to 2013. Unless Waters decides he wants to play for the Patriots in 2013 at a salary he deemed unacceptable for this season, it's likely he's played his final snap. That is, unless he's granted his walking papers in the offseason. Considering the Pats refused to let him go this season, it's doubtful they'll have a change-of-heart. A 12-year veteran, Waters had missed just three games since 2000 heading into 2012. He'll turn 36 in February.

Patriots AWOL guard Brian Waters' 2012 salary will be "tolled" to 2013 if he continues to fail to report to the team.

Waters, 35, made it clear to the Pats in August and September that he didn't want to play for them, despite an offer to nearly triple his salary. He wanted to play for a team in Texas and seemed content to sit out the season if he didn't get his way. He didn't, and the Patriots will now control his rights for 2013, as well. Waters is currently on the reserve/did not report list.

Updating a previous item, AWOL Patriots RG Brian Waters turned down a $4 million offer to play this season.

The offer came during training camp and would have made Waters the second-highest paid lineman in New England. It would have nearly tripled his $1.4 million base salary. According to the Boston Globe, Waters' original contract included an agreement with coach Bill Belichick that he would skip offseason workouts and a good portion of training camp. It's believed that Waters' preference is to play closer to his Texas home as opposed to retiring at age 35.

According to the Boston Globe, AWOL Patriots RG Brian Waters turned down a "significant" pay raise.

Per beat writer Shalise Manza Young, it was likely the Patriots' "last-ditch effort" to get Waters to report. It appears the only way Waters will play football this season is if he's granted his walking papers by the Patriots, which is extremely unlikely to happen. Waters is being stashed on the reserve/did not report list.

Patriots owner Robert Kraft left the door open for a possible Brian Waters return.

"Surely, we would have liked to have had him. I’m still not giving up hope that maybe he still wants to come back... We’ll see what happens," said Kraft. It sounds a bit on the optimistic side. Waters has balked at contract restructuring efforts by the Patriots this offseason and hasn't wanted to leave his Texas home and family behind. A more likely outcome could be that Waters returns for a late-season push. Dan Connolly will play right guard for the time being.

The nameplate has been taken off RG Brian Waters' locker at Patriots headquarters.

According to the Boston Herald, the Patriots want Waters to take a $500,000 pay cut down to the veteran minimum. The sides are at an impasse, as Waters balks at the contract restructuring and the Pats aren't sure if he's fully committed. Waters has contemplated retirement and reportedly wants to play closer to his family in Texas. The Herald now believes any speculation that Waters could return "should just about come to an end."

According to ESPN Boston, the situation remains "fluid" with Patriots RG Brian Waters.

Under contract for $1.4 million, Waters skipped the entire offseason program and camp, but the Patriots have kept his locker intact and yet to issue his No. 54 uniform. However, Waters reportedly wants to play closer to his Texas home. Right guard was a preseason trouble spot for the Pats, so they may soon be compelled to "enhance" Waters' salary in an effort to get him to report.

Patriots RG Brian Waters still has not reported to the team.

New England's opener is seven days away. The Pats have been incredibly patient with Waters -- a 35-year-old rumored to be contemplating retirement -- but at some point they're going to have to move on. In their third preseason game, the Patriots started Donald Thomas at right guard with Marcus Cannon at right tackle. Thomas was clearly one of the offensive line's weakest links.

Coach Bill Belichick offered no update on the status of RG Brian Waters when queried on Thursday.

With Logan Mankins and Sebastian Vollmer sidelined for the majority of preseason action and Waters staying home, the Patriots offensive line has been manhandled. If Waters returns in the week leading up to the first game -- like he did last season -- it would help fantasy owners feel a lot better about early-season consistency of key Pats players.

Coach Bill Belichick indicated that RG Brian Waters has been "excused" from the start of training camp.

Belichick wasn't surprised that Waters was a no-show and described the situation as similar to the veteran's "excused for personal reasons" absence from mandatory minicamp. "We'll take it day to day," added Belichick. "There is no long-term plan."

Patriots RG Brian Waters did not report for the start of training camp Wednesday.

The Boston Globe's Greg Bedard doesn't "think" Waters is retiring, but there has been plenty of speculation that he might. Waters, 35, may simply want more rest and the Patriots should be amenable. He's still playing at a high level.

Patriots RG Brian Waters has been excused from this week's mandatory minicamp for "personal reasons."

Waters is getting a veteran courtesy from Belichick. Although the 35-year-old considered retirement early in the offseason, the Boston Herald has reported that he's fully expected to play a 14th season. Waters has never been a fan of offseason practices.
Wed, Jun 13, 2012 12:11:00 PM

The Boston Herald reports RG Brian Waters has planned "all along" to return for his 14th season in 2012.

Waters and the Pats have been tight-lipped about his return. The 35-year-old has been absent for offseason activities, but that's no different than any other year. He always spends the spring with his family, missing voluntary work. Waters had a fine bounce-back season in 2011 as the Patriots' most consistent lineman. New England will field one of the NFL's top O-Lines this year.
