The Chicago Sun-Times confirms that backup QB Todd Collins could have played through a shoulder injury in the NFC Championship game.
Citing a source close to Collins, the Sun-Times calls the insertion of Caleb Hanie a "coach's decision." That decision should have been made two months ago. While it's understandable to prefer a veteran arm in the backup role, it's inexcusable that the Bears opted for that security blanket at mid-season when Collins' early-season game tape gave them no reason to believe that he could fulfill the role. Bears QB Todd Collins passed his exit physical after the MRI on his injured shoulder came back negative.

The 39-year-old will "consider his options" in the coming weeks, though he's almost certain to retire. Collins was brutal every time he took the field in relief of Jay Cutler this season. Coordinator Mike Martz has thus far received a free pass for his egregious mistake of re-elevating Collins to No. 2 over Caleb Hanie at mid-season.

Bears QB Todd Collins reportedly suffered a "significant" shoulder injury in the third quarter of Sunday's NFC Championship Game.

According to NFL Network's Albert Breer, Collins "might need surgery" and the impending free agent's "long career could be over." Sadly, it took this injury for the Bears to insert Caleb Hanie when all along he was clearly their best option behind Jay Cutler. Collins is scheduled for an MRI on Tuesday.

Todd Collins came on in relief of Jay Cutler (knee) Sunday but lasted just two series before being pulled for ineffectiveness.

Collins was brutal in his big chance, nearly getting picked off twice and failing to complete a pass in four attempts. He was sat down in favor of emergency third quarterback Caleb Hanie, raising the question of why Collins was the No. 2 quarterback in the first place. In all three of his appearances this season, Collins has proven he can not move an NFL offense.

Todd Collins has retaken the Bears' No. 2 quarterback job, according to the team's official game release for Week 9.

ESPN Chicago's Jeff Dickerson suggests that coordinator Mike Martz is behind the move, as he's the one who pushed for the team to shell out money for a veteran backup. Martz must have a short memory to push Collins' Carolina performance out of his mind.

After throwing his fourth interception, Todd Collins was pulled in favor of Caleb Hanie in the third quarter of Sunday's game at Carolina.

That should just about close the books on the 38-year-old's career as a fill-in starter. Collins was given an early lead and a dominant running game, but he single-handedly kept the Panthers in the ball game with his errant throws. He finished 6-of-16 for 32 yards, the four picks, and a 6.3 passer rating. Hanie completed 2-of-3 passes for 19 yards in garbage time.

Todd Collins will start at quarterback for the Bears on Sunday.

Jay Cutler must have emerged from Wednesday's limited workout still showing symptoms from his concussion. Against a woeful Carolina team on the road, Collins will be asked to manage the game and try to let his defense win. Matt Forte and Chester Taylor should see extra carries while Johnny Knox should be downgraded significantly. This will be Collins' first start since 2007.

Todd Collins left Sunday's game in the fourth quarter after being hit following a completion.

It's not clear what injury he suffered, though he was able to walk off the field on his own. Collins completed just 4-of-11 passes for 36 yards and was picked off before leaving. With Jay Cutler going down earlier in the game, the Bears are down to No. 3 quarterback Caleb Hanie.

Todd Collins is listed as the Bears' No. 2 quarterback, ahead of Caleb Hanie.

This was expected with Hanie coming off a shoulder injury and still developing. Collins, 38, is one of the league's weaker backups, but at least he is somewhat familiar with Mike Martz's system from his time as Trent Green's backup in Kansas City. He'd still be a poor option if Jay Cutler went down.

Bears signed QB Todd Collins, formerly of the Redskins.

Caleb Hanie he remains out with a shoulder injury, Dan LeFevour (3-of-10 for 39 yards and one interception Saturday) is impressing nobody. With the No. 2 situation in question, Collins will provide veteran insurance behind Jay Cutler. The Bears made him a six-figure guarantee, and his $855,000 will also be guaranteed if he makes the final roster.

Free agent QB Todd Collins has rejected a contract offer from the Bears, according to NFL.com's Jason La Canfora.

The Bears were offering only a veteran minimum contract that didn't include any guaranteed money, so it's no surprise Collins turned it down. Chicago is worried about their backup quarterback situation but have had their overtures rejected by Trent Green (twice), Damon Huard and now Collins.

The Bears are reportedly showing interest in free agent QB Todd Collins.

Collins, 38, drew next to no interest after being released by the Redskins in March, but the Bears are desperate. Collins does have experience in a Mike Martz-style system as a former backup under Dick Vermeil in Kansas City.

The Ravens have reportedly reached out to free agent QB Todd Collins, who was cut by the Redskins on Thursday.

Collins has ties to several Baltimore assistants, including "consultant" Al Saunders and coordinator Cam Cameron. The 38-year-old likely has little left, but could push disgruntled Troy Smith for the team's No. 2 QB job.

Redskins released QB Todd Collins.

Now 38 years old, Collins was due $2.9 million in 2010. Though his Redskins years will be remembered for an impressive late-season stretch in the 2007 playoff run, Collins looked washed up in three games last year.

Coach Jim Zorn told backup Todd Collins to "be ready" Monday night, sources told Jason Reid of the Washington Post.

Jason Campbell was named the starter by Zorn, but he'll clearly be on a very short leash. Zorn knows that a loss to the Eagles would be the final nail in his already built coffin. Zorn's confidence with Campbell has reached new lows.
