Lions CB Rashean Mathis said he'll only play for Detroit in 2016, or he'll retire.
Mathis has one year left on his contract at a $1 million salary and $500K roster bonus. The Lions could decide to cut him and save the money after the 35-year-old ended the season on I.R. with a concussion. Jan 4 - 9:33 PM

Lions placed CB Rashean Mathis (concussion) on injured reserve, ending his season.

It's a surprise with eight games still remaining. Mathis has been sidelined the last three weeks with what must be a serious concussion. The Lions will move forward with Darius Slay and Nevin Lawson on the outside. Mathis is due only a $1 million 2016 salary, but isn't a lock to return for his age-36 season.

Lions CB Rashean Mathis is in the league's concussion protocol.

Apparently Mathis suffered his concussion against the Vikings in Week 7 but wasn't diagnosed until now. When he missed Week 8 he was listed on the injury report as having an illness. Right now, Mathis is in the Stage 2 of the league's five-step concussion protocol. That allows him to engage in light exercise. Coach Jim Caldwell said it's too early to decide if Mathis will play Sunday against Green Bay.

Lions declared CB Rashean Mathis (illness) inactive for Week 8 against the Chiefs.

Mathis has had an up-and-down season, but the veteran is a better option than Nevin Lawson, who is expected to replace him in base sets. Already in a great matchup, the Chiefs' passing game gets another boost with Mathis sidelined.

Lions RCB Rashean Mathis gave up seven catches for 85 yards to Keenan Allen Week 1.

Allen dominated the entire Lions' defense on his way to 15 catches for 166 yards, but he did his most important damage against Mathis in the second half. With the Lions' front four getting almost no pressure, Philip Rivers consistently found Allen wide open in the middle of the field. Mathis has been a quality corner the last two seasons, but his play could drop off at age 35. With Darius Slay dealing with an ankle injury, the Lions' pass defense may no longer be a unit to fear.

Lions re-signed CB Rashean Mathis to a two-year, $3.5 million contract.

Mathis is entering his age-35 season, but has been a huge bargain for the Lions the past two seasons. He's made 29 starts for Detroit, grading out as a top-25 cover corner at Pro Football Focus in each year. The Lions can't bank on Mathis forever, but he's a cheap veteran leader still playing quality ball.

Lions GM Martin Mayhew would "love" to bring back free agent CB Rashean Mathis.

Mathis remains effective at age 34, grading out as Pro Football Focus' No. 12 cornerback last season. The two sides seem destined to reach a deal as Mathis has already expressed his desire to stay in Detroit.

Impending free-agent CB Rashean Mathis would like to re-sign with the Lions.

"I think we have something special here, and I would love to be here," Mathis said. "I love our group, I love our DB room, I love what we're building here. So it would kind of sting a little bit if I'm not." Mathis has had a renaissance in Detroit after looking completely finished with the Jaguars in 2012. Going on 35, Mathis should be cheap to retain.

Impending free agent CB Rashean Mathis plans to continue his playing career.

Why not? Mathis, 35 in August, looked done in 2012 with the Jaguars after tearing his ACL in November 2011. The Lions picked him up off the street in August 2013, and he's graded out as Pro Football Focus' No. 23 and 11 cover corner each of the past two seasons, respectively. Mathis won't command major dollars at his age, so he'll be a nice bargain on a one- or two-year deal.

The Lions are counting on CB Rashean Mathis to be a 2014 starter after releasing Chris Houston.

Mathis had a renaissance in 2013, starting 13 games for Detroit and grading out as NFL's No. 27 cornerback according to Pro Football Focus. It is hard not to predict some regression as Mathis enters his age-34 season, but for now he looks safe atop the depth chart. The Lions are hoping for a huge leap from Darius Slay, with Bill Bentley and Nevin Lawson battling at nickel back.

Lions agreed to terms with CB Rashean Mathis on a one-year contract.

Mathis was surprisingly the Lions' best corner last year, grading out 27th among 110 qualifiers per Pro Football Focus. But as he enters his age-34 season, he'll ideally be a stopgap No. 3 or 4 behind starters Chris Houston and Darius Slay. This signing shouldn't prevent the Lions from using a high draft pick on a cornerback, though we suspect they'll avoid one at No. 10 overall. There isn't a top-ten cornerback talent in this particular draft.

Lions CB Rashean Mathis exited Sunday's Week 6 game against the Browns with a groin injury.

Mathis suffered the injury in the second quarter and is questionable to return. Rookie Darius Slay has replaced him in the starting lineup.

Lions coach Jim Schwartz is now denying RCB Rashean Mathis suffered a Week 4 concussion.

The Lions seem to care about concussion disclosure less than any team in the league. Mathis suffered the first-half head injury Sunday against the Bears, and was ruled out at halftime. On Monday, Schwartz insisted Mathis is "not having any symptoms. Sometimes you see some delayed stuff. ... None of that's been the case with Rashean." It appears Mathis will be cleared to play in Week 5.

Lions CB Rashean Mathis was forced from Sunday's game against the Bears with a concussion, and will not return.

Mathis went down in the first half, and was ruled out after halftime. Shaky rookie Darius Slay is now in the game for the Lions.
Sun, Sep 29, 2013 03:02:00 PM

Lions CB Rashean Mathis is expected to start ahead of rookie Darius Slay this week against the Redskins.

Slay started each of the first two weeks, but was worked by Jerome Simpson in Week 1. The second-rounder was benched by the team in both games. Per Pro Football Focus, Mathis has allowed just four catches for 21 yards on ten targets. He looks to be finally recovered from a 2011 torn ACL.
