Fred Taylor will sign a ceremonial one-day contract with the Jaguars Friday to retire as a member of the team.
Taylor is the Jags' all-time leading rusher with 11,271 yards. He ends his career as the NFL's 15th leading rusher, compiling seven 1,000-yard seasons and adding 2,384 receiving yards. Now 35, Taylor's body failed him as he missed 19 games over the last two years with the Patriots. Although he somehow went to just one Pro Bowl, Taylor was a top-20 fantasy back seven times in his career. Thu, Sep 1, 2011 11:32:00 AM

Free agent Fred Taylor admits that he's still "back and forth" and "straddling the fence" on retirement.

"I have my moments when I pick my kids up from school, I'm at peace," said Taylor. "But then again, when I turn on the TV or I look at an old highlight clip and hear something about football, then it's 'go time.'" Taylor has no intention of "straddling" once the time comes to make a decision because he doesn't want to pull a Brett Favre.

Free agent Fred Taylor told the Boston Herald Monday that he hasn't decided whether to retire yet.

"I haven't decided anything yet," said Taylor, who earlier in the day told the Gainesville Sun that he's "basically retired" from football. Regardless, it sounds he is losing the "itch" after being unable to stay on the field since the 2008 season. We wouldn't bet on Taylor playing another NFL snap.

Free agent Fred Taylor told the Gainesville Sun on Monday that he's "basically retired" from football.

The 35-year-old body has broken down. Taylor has missed 19 of a possible 32 regular season games over the past two years, and is up to 2,534 carries to rank 21st on the all-time list. Taylor's 11,695 rushing yards are 15th all time, although his career 4.62 YPC average is perhaps Taylor's most impressive statistic. It's criminal that Taylor managed just one Pro Bowl in 13 seasons. He was a top-20 fantasy back seven times, and top-11 on four occasions.

Fred Taylor seemed unsure about retirement during a Monday morning meeting with reporters in Florida.

If Taylor doesn't retire, he will be an unrestricted free agent once the labor dispute is resolved. He said the lack of playing time last year bought him time and he thinks he has two years left, but also said he wants to be healthy enough to play with his kids after football. Now 35 and just as injury prone as ever, we doubt Taylor would attract real attention on the open market.

The Boston Herald believes that Fred Taylor's career is "almost certainly" over.

The 35-year-old couldn't stay off the shelf in 2010 and isn't signed for 2011. Also teary-eyed when discussing his future at the end of the year, Taylor seems likely to walk away this offseason. If so, the 13-year veteran would finish his career with 11,695 rushing yards, good for 15th most all time.

Fred Taylor was emotional after Sunday's game when discussing his future and potential retirement this offseason.

"A lot of things twirling in my head," said Taylor, who turns 35 in a week and a half. The 13-year veteran is unsigned for 2011, and the Patriots will be moving on. He may end up signing a one-day contract with the Jaguars before calling it a career.

Patriots declared RB Fred Taylor, RB Thomas Clayton, WR Taylor Price, T Mark LeVoir, G Rich Ohrnberger, DL Myron Pryor, LB Marques Murrell, and CB Tony Carter inactive for Sunday's Divisional Round playoff game against the Jets.

The Pats are relatively healthy for mid-January. Aaron Hernandez (hip) returns after missing the regular-season finale. Taylor isn't suiting up in what could go down as the last game of his career.

Fred Taylor is expected to retire this offseason, according to the Boston Globe.

Nagging injuries have turned Taylor into a bit player for the Patriots. Over the last two seasons, he's appeared in just 13 games and rushed 106 times. Taylor will turn 35 later this month and with his contract up, the Patriots are likely to move on.

Patriots declared RB Fred Taylor, WR Taylor Price, G Rich Ohrnberger, T Mark LeVoir, DL Myron Pryor, DT Ron Brace, RB Thomas Clayton and DE Mike Wright inactive for Week 15.

The good news for the Patriots is that LCB Devin McCourty (ribs) is good to go. Taylor has been active the last two games since covering from his turf toes injuries, but he's been an afterthought in the offense. Since he doesn't contribute on special teams, he's not needed. BenJarvus Green-Ellis and Danny Woodhead will continue to handle the load.

Fred Taylor (toe) is not on the Patriots' injury report for Week 13.

Taylor was active last week but didn't even see the field. The Patriots are unlikely to switch things up with BenJarvus Green-Ellis and Danny Woodhead playing so well in a backfield partnership.

Fred Taylor (toe) was active Thursday but did not get on the field.

Taylor was just "up" as insurance behind BenJarvus Green-Ellis, Sammy Morris and Danny Woodhead. He's not a true threat for carries right now after being out since Week 3.

Fred Taylor (toe) is active for Thursday's game against the Lions.

It will be Taylor's first game since Week 3, as the veteran has been dealing with turf toe on both feet. We still expect BenJarvus Green-Ellis to be the Patriots' lead back, but Taylor should see a handful of touches. Tom Brady, as expected, is also active. The Patriots inactives are WR Taylor Price, T Mark LeVoir, G Rich Ohrnberger, G Stephen Neal, DL Myron Pryor, DL Brandon Deaderick, DL Mike Wright and CB Jonathan Wilhite.

Fred Taylor (toe, questionable) was limited in Patriots practice Wednesday.

Taylor may have an outside shot to be active against Detroit on Thursday, but it's hard to imagine him playing a significant role with how productive BenJarvus Green-Ellis has been of late. Taylor has been out since Week 3.

Fred Taylor (toe) was limited again in Tuesday's practice.

Taylor has been practicing in a limited fashion for three weeks, but he hasn't seen game action since Week 3. If he plays Thursday, don't expect a significant role.
