Ex-Panthers WR Muhsin Muhammad announced his retirement from football Thursday.
Carolina's all-time leader in receptions (696) and receiving yards (9,255), Muhammad played 11 seasons with the Panthers and three with the Bears. "Moose" led the league in receptions in 2000 with 102 and finished as fantasy's top receiver in 2004 when he gained 1,405 yards with 16 TDs. He was part of the legendary 1996 receiver class that also boasts Marvin Harrison, Terrell Owens, Joe Horn, Keyshawn Johnson, Terry Glenn, Amani Toomer, and Bobby Engram. Muhsin Muhammad will announce his retirement from football at a 12:30 p.m. ET press conference Thursday.

The Panthers turned the page after Muhammad's production dropped off at age 36 last season. He's not known to have received interest from any other NFL teams this offseason. Muhammad racked up 860 receptions, 11,438 yards, and 62 TDs in a 14-year career.

The Panthers will not be bringing back free agent Muhsin Muhammad, according to the Gaston Gazette.

Carolina is pinching pennies while rebuilding, and the declining 37-year-old doesn't appear to be in the budget. Muhammad is not known to have received interest from other teams, so this could be the end of the line.

Coach John Fox was noncommittal when asked if free agent Muhsin Muhammad could return to the team later in the offseason.

Fox spoke in past tense about Moose but left the door slightly ajar. With Dwayne Jarrett no longer considered Muhammad's successor, the Panthers are expected to target a receiver in the second or third round of the upcoming draft.

There's been no indication that the Panthers intend to re-sign unrestricted free agent Muhsin Muhammad.

Muhammad, 37 next season, has fallen off the cliff and is not garnering interest on the open market. The Panthers could eventually bring him back on a one-year deal to mentor Dwayne Jarrett, but Steve Smith will be hoping the team brings in someone more explosive to line up opposite him.

Beat writer Darin Gantt says it's possible that the Panthers will re-sign free agent Muhsin Muhammad to come back in a reduced role.

The Panthers can't bring Moose back as a starter and expect Steve Smith to have a productive season. We're guessing that Muhammad, 37 next season, will simply move on -- assuming another team will have him. If he comes back, look for him to be more of a mentor to a receiver they draft and/or Dwayne Jarrett.

Muhsin Muhammad caught seven balls for 85 yards in the Panthers' Week 17 win over New Orleans.

A nice send-off for the 37-year-old to be. Muhammad, in obvious decline, battled knee and ankle problems for much of his contract season, finishing with 53 catches for 581 yards and one touchdown. He says he wants to keep playing football, but it isn't going to be with the Panthers in 2010.

Muhsin Muhammad (ankle, questionable) returned to a full practice Friday.

Moose is not in danger of missing Sunday's matchup against the Saints.

Muhsin Muhammad (ankle) returned to Panthers practice Thursday.

Muhammad has been chirping a lot lately about how his career isn't over and he wants to return to the Panthers. With Steve Smith (arm) out, we'll see what he can do Sunday.

Muhsin Muhammad (ankle) sat out Panthers practice on Wednesday.

The Panthers are counting on Moose to be their No. 1 receiver with Steve Smith done for the year. Muhammad should be able to play against the Saints.

Muhsin Muhammad stated Wednesday that he does not anticipate retiring after this season.

He isn't giving up after recording an electrifying (and career worst) 10.8 yards-per-catch average in 2009. Muhammad turns 37 in May and doesn't have a contract for 2010. He probably won't garner any interest on the open market.

Beat writer Darin Gantt speculates that this week could be Muhsin Muhammad's final game with the Panthers.

Muhammad, 36, is in the final year of his contract and can't even produce with Steve Smith drawing weekly double teams. It may be time for Moose to retire. The Panthers sorely need weapons in the passing game, as they can't even go three-wide if they wanted to.

Muhsin Muhammad caught three passes for 56 yards with a touchdown in Sunday's blowout of the Giants.

If you want to know how bad the Giants secondary is, think about this: Muhammad consistently got behind the defense and scored his first touchdown of the year. Don't add Muhammad in any formats.
Sun, Dec 27, 2009 04:03:00 PM

Muhsin Muhammad had two catches for 29 yards in Week 15.

Muhammad has a bum knee and Matt Moore throwing him passes. He shouldn't be anywhere near a playoff-bound fantasy roster.
Sun, Dec 20, 2009 11:57:00 PM

Muhsin Muhammad (probable, knee) fully practiced on Friday.

Moose is safe to avoid in fantasy leagues this week, as usual.
