Colts head coach Chuck Pagano returned to work Monday morning.
When Pagano was diagnosed with leukemia on Sept. 26, the Colts were 1-2. He's since gone through three rounds of chemotherapy, beaten cancer and returns to a 10-5 team that has used a "Chuckstrong" mantra while earning the AFC's No. 5 seed. It's one of the best stories in sports we can remember. "To everybody out there, it's your faith, your belief, your will. With that will you can overcome anything," Pagano said Monday. According to the Indianapolis Star, head coach Chuck Pagano is expected to rejoin the Colts Monday.

The magical season for the Colts gets even better. Pagano, who was diagnosed with leukemia on Sept. 26, has been through three rounds of chemotherapy. He is now in remission and has spent the last three weeks building his strength back up. Pagano won't fully take the reins back from interim coach Bruce Arians, but his mere presence at the teams facility heading into the playoffs will be an emotional lift.

Colts owner Jim Irsay acknowledged Monday that head coach Chuck Pagano (leukemia) is unlikely to be "all in" with the organization this season.

Pagano has been diagnosed with AML, which is a cancer of the bone marrow and accounts for roughly 10 percent of leukemia patients. "I’m very optimistic he will beat this thing," said Irsay. "I think it’s unlikely that he will be ‘all-in’ as a head coach this season. It’s probably not in the cards where he’s going to be able to come back and be ‘all-in’ this season. ... There are peaks and valleys." OC Bruce Arians has taken over as Colts head coach.

Colts head coach Chuck Pagano has been diagnosed with leukemia and is out indefinitely.

Pagano, 52, had been feeling unusual fatigue recently and went for blood tests. An Indy Star source called the situation serious, but was optimistic about a full recovery. Pagano is in isolation at an Indianapolis hospital and is expected to remain there for six weeks. More details on the first-year head coach are expected at a Monday press conference. Offensive coordinator Bruce Arians will take over as the Colts' head coach.

Colts hired Greg Manusky as defensive coordinator.

It's more confirmation that Indianapolis is scrapping its old 4-3, Tampa 2-style defensive schemes and jumping headfirst into a 3-4. Manusky, an NFL defensive coordinator since 2007 with San Francisco and San Diego, worked in the AFC West against then-Raiders DBs coach and new Colts head coach Chuck Pagano in the mid-2000s. Manusky has taught 3-4 schemes in virtually all of his coaching stops. The Colts will overhaul their roster this offseason.

The Colts are showing interest in Greg Manusky regarding their defensive coordinator vacancy.

Chuck Pagano figures to be primary Indy's decision maker on defense, but Manusky's history is in the 3-4 and he has experience as a linebackers coach. The Colts missed out on Steelers LBs coach Keith Butler for this job.

The Colts plan to hire Steelers linebackers coach Keith Butler as their defensive coordinator.

A Steelers assistant since 2003, Butler was instrumental in the development of James Harrison, LaMarr Woodley, and Lawrence Timmons in Pittsburgh. Raw 2010 second-round pick Jason Worilds also flashed big-time ability under Butler's tutelage this past season. New coordinators Bruce Arians and Butler will fit right in on new Colts coach Chuck Pagano's staff, as all three worked together under Butch Davis in 2001 with the Browns. Butler will help Pagano install a 3-4 defense as Indianapolis undertakes a full-on rebuilding project. We wouldn't expect Robert Mathis, Gary Brackett, or Dwight Freeney back in 2012.

Colts hired former Ravens defensive coordinator Chuck Pagano as head coach.

Pagano isn't known to have any history with new GM Ryan Grigson, so the Colts' coaching search appears to have been approached with an open mind. Pagano's 2011 Ravens defense ranked third in the NFL in yards allowed, fourth against the pass, and second versus the run. Pagano runs a hybrid 4-3/3-4 and is likely to remake Indianapolis' defense. He'll likely look to hire a quarterback-focused offensive coordinator to work with Andrew Luck. It's perhaps worth noting that Hue Jackson was on Baltimore's staff with Pagano in 2008 and 2009.

The Colts will interview Ravens defensive coordinator Chuck Pagano for their head-coaching vacancy on Tuesday.

There is no favorite in the Indianapolis coaching search so far, but Pagano could quickly rise to the top of GM Ryan Grigson's short list. An NFL assistant since 2001 and football coach going back to 1984, the 51-year-old Pagano's 2011 Ravens defense ranked third overall in the league and pressured Tom Brady into his worst game of the season in the AFC Championship.

Colts DC Mike Murphy is retiring from the NFL.

Murphy saw the writing on the wall with the Colts cleaning house on Jim Caldwell's coaching staff. Secondaries coach Rod Perry, DL coach John Teerlinck, and QBs coach Ron Turner were fired Thursday. Murphy took over for a fired Larry Coyer in late November, and got his defense to show major improvement down the stretch. He coached 27 years in the NFL.

The Colts have requested permission to interview Bengals DC Mike Zimmer for their head coaching vacancy.

Zimmer has been eliminated from the Dolphins' search, but he remains alive in Tampa and now Indy. The Colts have three candidates at this point, with Saints OC Pete Carmichael and Titans DC Jerry Gray also set to interview shortly.

The Titans have granted the Colts permission to interview DBs coach Jerry Gray for Indy's head-coaching vacancy.

Interviewing Gray would satisfy The Rooney Rule for Indianapolis, which has not yet followed through on a visit with Dolphins DBs coach Todd Bowles as was reported. A journeyman assistant, Gray coached up a young Titans secondary in 2011 that was far better than its No. 13 pass-defense ranking indicates.

Dolphins interim coach Todd Bowles is reportedly "on the Colts' radar" as a head coaching candidate.

Bowles has already interviewed with the Raiders. His second interview with the Dolphins is expected to go down Wednesday or Friday of this week. Bowles, who went 2-1 as interim coach in Miami, would satisfy the Rooney Rule for the Colts.

According to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, the Colts "reached out" to Jeff Fisher before he announced his decision to accept the Rams job.

The timeline suggests new Colts GM Ryan Grigson never had any intention of keeping Jim Caldwell as head coach. Owner Jim Irsay emphatically denies the Post-Dispatch report, calling it "B.S." Added Irsay, "We weren't involved in any Fishing expedition, stayed far clear of it."

The Colts interviewed ex-Rams coach Steve Spagnuolo for their defensive coordinator position on Monday.

The timing is odd considering Spags interviewed with now-fired coach Jim Caldwell, among others, in Indy. If the Colts are serious about landing Spagnuolo, they join the Eagles and Saints in vying for his services, with the Falcons now out of the mix.
