Coach Chuck Pagano admits the Colts will have to be "smart" with Robert Mathis (Achilles') this season.
"When he gets cleared, we’ll get him back on the grass," Pagano said. "Then when we get him back, we’ve got to be smart with how we get him back. ... I don’t know. If anybody can do it, I’m putting my money on him." Pagano's boilerplate comments are notable for what they don't contain — certainty about Mathis' return date and 2015 role. Mathis has promised he'll be ready for Week 1, but he's an obvious candidate for the reserve/PUP list. Jul 13 - 3:20 PM

Colts owner Jim Irsay doesn't expect OLB Robert Mathis (Achilles') to be full-go for training camp.

Mathis was never a realistic candidate to be cleared for the start of camp. Entering his age-34 season, his ability to bounce back from a major injury remains a concern. Mathis isn't a lock to be ready for Week 1.

Colts OLB Robert Mathis (Achilles') promises he'll be back by the start of the regular season.

"I said it. I meant it," Mathis stated in a radio interview Sunday. "I'll be back by September." Mathis is believed to have endured setbacks in his recovery from a torn Achilles' tendon. At age 34 and coming off an explosion-sapping injury, it's unclear what Mathis will have left to offer the Colts.
May 31 - 11:40 PM

Colts OLB Robert Mathis (Achilles) remains without a timetable to return.

Mathis has been slow to recover from his September Achilles' surgery. His status for the start of training camp is still up in the air. Colts owner Jim Irsay said Mathis could be sidelined until November in a worst-case scenario.
May 16 - 8:14 PM

Robert Mathis (Achilles') said he hopes to play during the preseason.

Mathis is eyeing a return to the field for the start of training camp, but admits rehab from a torn Achilles' has been "slow." It's a tough injury for anyone yet alone a 34-year-old. There's a chance he opens the season on reserve/PUP.
Mar 31 - 9:51 PM

Colts owner Jim Irsay stated at the NFL owners' meetings that OLB Robert Mathis (Achilles') may not be ready to play until November.

This would make Mathis a candidate for reserve/PUP to open the season, costing him the first six games. Mathis tore his Achilles' in early September of 2014. ESPN reported Mathis suffered a setback during his recovery, but that was denied by Mathis' agent. Based on this new information, we tend to believe Mathis indeed had a setback. Mathis turned 34 years old last month.
Mar 23 - 4:07 PM

Robert Mathis' (Achilles') agent denies he suffered a setback, and still hopes he'll be ready for OTAs.

We're not sure who to believe, but even if this report is true, it's way too early for the Colts to count on Mathis being available for OTAs. Mathis turns 34 in 10 days, and Achilles' tears are very tough to recover from. Don't expect Mathis to be the same player we saw in 2013 when he recorded an NFL-best 19.5 sacks.
Feb 16 - 3:04 PM

Colts OLB Robert Mathis suffered a slight setback while rehabbing his Achilles' tear.

Mathis originally blew out his Achilles' in early September. It's a massive injury, especially for a player that will turn 34 next week. He certainly doesn't need any complications. We'd consider Mathis questionable for training camp. It's doubtful the five-time Pro Bowler will ever truly return to form.
Feb 16 - 10:01 AM

Colts GM Ryan Grigson said OLB Robert Mathis (Achilles') might not be ready for training camp.

Mathis will be 10 months removed from surgery when training camp starts. It puts him on track to be cleared if he avoids setbacks, but the Colts figure to move Mathis along slowly after he missed all of 2014. Mathis signed an extension in September and is under contract the next two seasons. Turning 34 in February, Mathis can't be counted on to make a big 2015 impact.
Jan 23 - 8:04 PM

Colts signed OLB Robert Mathis to a one-year contract extension.

The 33-year-old Mathis was suspended the first four games of the season for PEDs and is currently on the NFI list with a torn Achilles. He's now technically not an impending free agent until 2016, but this extension is structured as a $6 million team option. Mathis will have to prove his health to avoid getting cut.

Mathis will have plenty of time to get healthy for 2015. It's possible the sides will agree to a short contract extension in the offseason.

Profootballtalk reports suspended Colts OLB Robert Mathis has suffered a torn Achilles' tendon, and is done for the season.

Per PFT, Mathis suffered the injury working out his own last week. It means he'll revert to injured reserve upon his Week 5 activation from the suspended list, and leaves a crater the size of Indianapolis in the Colts' front seven. Mathis was DPOY worthy in 2013, earning first team All-Pro honors while racking up 19.5 sacks. The Colts are now stuck with Bjoern Werner and Erik Walden at outside linebacker, and minus one of the only difference makers on their defense. The Colts are going to be in a lot of shootouts. Now 33, Mathis is signed through 2015.

NFL suspended Colts OLB Robert Mathis four games for violating the league's policy on performance enhancing drugs.

Per's Ian Rapoport, Mathis tested positive for a fertility drug called Clomid, which is a banned substance. Mathis can participate in offseason practices and preseason games, but won't be eligible to return until Week 5. It's a major blow to the Colts' pass rush, with Bjoern Werner likely to replace Mathis at rush linebacker opposite Erik Walden. Mathis is coming off a career-best 19 1/2 sacks in 2013.

The Colts have moved Robert Mathis to "rush" linebacker in their 3-4 defense, where he'll now rush from the weak side.

Despite modest size (6'2/245), Mathis has been a strong-side defender throughout his career. As the primary rush 'backer, Mathis will now square off with opposing left tackles and have to deal with fewer "chip" blocks from backs and tight ends. The position change could supplement Mathis' sack total because he'll do less edge setting in the run game. Erik Walden and rookie Bjoern Werner are now competing to start on the strong side.
