Colts OLB Robert Mathis (Achilles') believes he could be ready for Week 1.
Mathis was surprisingly activated off the active/PUP list on Monday. Week 1 is highly unlikely, but the Colts have to be confident he can return before Week 7. Mathis would have been required to sit out the first six games of the season if he began the year on the reserve/PUP list. Aug 25 - 6:09 PM

Colts OLB Robert Mathis (Achilles') has been activated off the active/PUP list.

This is somewhat of a surprise. Removing Mathis off the active/PUP will prevent the Colts from stashing him on the reserve/PUP when the season begins. This is a clear indication he is expected back sometime in the first six games. Mathis was in uniform for practice on Tuesday.
Aug 25 - 11:35 AM

Colts owner Jim Irsay expects OLB Robert Mathis (Achilles') to return in late September or October.

Mathis made grandiose claims all offseason about how he'd be ready for Week 1 and even the start of training camp. Instead, Mathis opened camp on active/PUP and now obviously isn't going to play on Opening Day. When Mathis does return, it's entirely unclear whether he'll have effectiveness left. 34-year-olds returning from torn Achilles' tendons generally aren't great bets.
Aug 5 - 10:07 PM

Colts placed OLB Robert Mathis on the active/PUP list.

Mathis has repeatedly vowed to be ready for Week 1, previously even making training camp a goal. The Colts will smartly play it safe with their 34-year-old pass rusher, who tore his Achilles' last September and was rumored to have suffered a setback in the meantime. Considering his age and injury, anything the Colts get from Mathis this season should be considered a bonus.
Aug 2 - 9:17 AM

Coach Chuck Pagano admits the Colts will have to be "smart" with Robert Mathis (Achilles') this season.

"When he gets cleared, we’ll get him back on the grass," Pagano said. "Then when we get him back, we’ve got to be smart with how we get him back. ... I don’t know. If anybody can do it, I’m putting my money on him." Pagano's boilerplate comments are notable for what they don't contain — certainty about Mathis' return date and 2015 role. Mathis has promised he'll be ready for Week 1, but he's an obvious candidate for the reserve/PUP list.
Jul 13 - 3:20 PM

Colts owner Jim Irsay doesn't expect OLB Robert Mathis (Achilles') to be full-go for training camp.

Mathis was never a realistic candidate to be cleared for the start of camp. Entering his age-34 season, his ability to bounce back from a major injury remains a concern. Mathis isn't a lock to be ready for Week 1.
Jun 10 - 7:09 PM

Colts OLB Robert Mathis (Achilles') promises he'll be back by the start of the regular season.

"I said it. I meant it," Mathis stated in a radio interview Sunday. "I'll be back by September." Mathis is believed to have endured setbacks in his recovery from a torn Achilles' tendon. At age 34 and coming off an explosion-sapping injury, it's unclear what Mathis will have left to offer the Colts.
May 31 - 11:40 PM

Colts OLB Robert Mathis (Achilles) remains without a timetable to return.

Mathis has been slow to recover from his September Achilles' surgery. His status for the start of training camp is still up in the air. Colts owner Jim Irsay said Mathis could be sidelined until November in a worst-case scenario.
May 16 - 8:14 PM

Robert Mathis (Achilles') said he hopes to play during the preseason.

Mathis is eyeing a return to the field for the start of training camp, but admits rehab from a torn Achilles' has been "slow." It's a tough injury for anyone yet alone a 34-year-old. There's a chance he opens the season on reserve/PUP.
Mar 31 - 9:51 PM

Colts owner Jim Irsay stated at the NFL owners' meetings that OLB Robert Mathis (Achilles') may not be ready to play until November.

This would make Mathis a candidate for reserve/PUP to open the season, costing him the first six games. Mathis tore his Achilles' in early September of 2014. ESPN reported Mathis suffered a setback during his recovery, but that was denied by Mathis' agent. Based on this new information, we tend to believe Mathis indeed had a setback. Mathis turned 34 years old last month.
Mar 23 - 4:07 PM

Robert Mathis' (Achilles') agent denies he suffered a setback, and still hopes he'll be ready for OTAs.

We're not sure who to believe, but even if this report is true, it's way too early for the Colts to count on Mathis being available for OTAs. Mathis turns 34 in 10 days, and Achilles' tears are very tough to recover from. Don't expect Mathis to be the same player we saw in 2013 when he recorded an NFL-best 19.5 sacks.
Feb 16 - 3:04 PM

Colts OLB Robert Mathis suffered a slight setback while rehabbing his Achilles' tear.

Mathis originally blew out his Achilles' in early September. It's a massive injury, especially for a player that will turn 34 next week. He certainly doesn't need any complications. We'd consider Mathis questionable for training camp. It's doubtful the five-time Pro Bowler will ever truly return to form.
Feb 16 - 10:01 AM

Colts GM Ryan Grigson said OLB Robert Mathis (Achilles') might not be ready for training camp.

Mathis will be 10 months removed from surgery when training camp starts. It puts him on track to be cleared if he avoids setbacks, but the Colts figure to move Mathis along slowly after he missed all of 2014. Mathis signed an extension in September and is under contract the next two seasons. Turning 34 in February, Mathis can't be counted on to make a big 2015 impact.
Jan 23 - 8:04 PM

Colts signed OLB Robert Mathis to a one-year contract extension.

The 33-year-old Mathis was suspended the first four games of the season for PEDs and is currently on the NFI list with a torn Achilles. He's now technically not an impending free agent until 2016, but this extension is structured as a $6 million team option. Mathis will have to prove his health to avoid getting cut.
Tue, Sep 30, 2014 12:06:00 PM

Colts placed OLB Robert Mathis (Achilles') on the reserve/non-football injury list.

Mathis tore his Achilles' tendon working out on his own in early September. The 2013 Defensive Player of the Year runner-up is done for the season. Mathis turns 34 next February. His base salary for 2015 will be a reasonable $4 million, although Mathis is also due a $3 million offseason roster bonus.
