Colts OLB Robert Mathis has been named the AFC Defensive Player of the Week for Week 16.
Mathis recorded his sixth and seventh sacks of the season in the win over the Dolphins, sacking Ryan Tannehill on fourth-and-goal from the five-yard line with 40 seconds left in the 18-12 game. Coming off 10(!) offseason surgeries on his Achilles' tendon, Mathis continues to generate heat at 34 years old. Wed, Dec 30, 2015 10:31:00 AM

Date:

Colts OLB Robert Mathis started and played 73 percent of the defensive snaps Week 8 against Carolina.

Coming off a ruptured Achilles' tendon, Mathis was limited to spot duties early in the season. He has started each of the last two games, however, and recorded three sacks in those contests. "He’s got speed. He’s got burst. He’s playing more snaps obviously," Colts coach Chuck Pagano said. "The guy is playing well and he has no limitations right now." At 34, Mathis has provided a much needed spark for the Colts' pass rush. He will look to keep it going this week against old friend Peyton Manning.

Colts OLB Robert Mathis revealed Friday that he underwent ten offseason surgeries on his ruptured Achilles' tendon.

That's right, ten. Mathis had numerous setbacks and was all along expected to open the 2015 season on the reserve/PUP list. Incredibly, Mathis got himself ready by Week 2 and made an impact against the Jets, only recording one tackle but showing some pass-rush juice as a situational edge rusher.

Colts OLB Robert Mathis (Achilles) is questionable for Week 2.

Mathis practiced on a limited basis all week and would be on a snap count even if he plays. He will be a game-time decision.

Colts OLB Robert Mathis (Achilles') is inactive for Week 1.

Mathis remains week to week. Also inactive for the Colts are CB Greg Toler, RB Vick Ballard, CB D'Joun Smith, OG Hugh Thornton, OG Denzelle Good and DL Billy Winn.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reports Colts OLB Robert Mathis has undergone 10 surgical procedures over the past year to "prevent infection and ensure his Achilles' was healing right."

It's testament to what football players will go through to get on the field. Mathis will serve as a situational pass rusher if he's active for Sunday's opener. Now 34, Mathis' effectiveness is in question after he missed all of 2014.

Colts OLB Robert Mathis (questionable, Achilles) will play limited snaps if he suits up against the Bills.

The Colts have been limiting Mathis' snaps in practice and would do the same if he is able to play Week 1. It remains to be seen how much gas the 34-year-old has left coming off an Achilles' injury, but Mathis could provide a spark even as a situational pass rusher early in the season.

Colts OLB Robert Mathis (questionable, Achilles) will be a game-time decision for Sunday’s opener.

Mathis is trending in the right direction after practicing on a limited basis this week. The Colts media are expecting him to play. Mathis should be available as a situational pass rusher.

The Colts "remain noncommittal" about Robert Mathis' (Achilles') Week 1 status.

Per reporter Mike Chappell, coach Chuck Pagano is eager to keep the Bills "guessing." We should have a good idea of Mathis' status by the time Friday's injury report comes out.

Coach Chuck Pagano didn't rule out OLB Robert Mathis (Achilles) playing Week 1.

"There’s a possibility. He’s been practicing and we’re getting him more reps," Pagano said. "He’s making great progress." Mathis hasn’t had any setbacks since getting activated off active/PUP in late August. He’s highly questionable for the opener, but remains on track for an early-season return.

Colts OLB Robert Mathis (Achilles') believes he could be ready for Week 1.

Mathis was surprisingly activated off the active/PUP list on Monday. Week 1 is highly unlikely, but the Colts have to be confident he can return before Week 7. Mathis would have been required to sit out the first six games of the season if he began the year on the reserve/PUP list.

Colts OLB Robert Mathis (Achilles') has been activated off the active/PUP list.

This is somewhat of a surprise. Removing Mathis off the active/PUP will prevent the Colts from stashing him on the reserve/PUP when the season begins. This is a clear indication he is expected back sometime in the first six games. Mathis was in uniform for practice on Tuesday.

Colts owner Jim Irsay expects OLB Robert Mathis (Achilles') to return in late September or October.

Mathis made grandiose claims all offseason about how he'd be ready for Week 1 and even the start of training camp. Instead, Mathis opened camp on active/PUP and now obviously isn't going to play on Opening Day. When Mathis does return, it's entirely unclear whether he'll have effectiveness left. 34-year-olds returning from torn Achilles' tendons generally aren't great bets.

Colts placed OLB Robert Mathis on the active/PUP list.

Mathis has repeatedly vowed to be ready for Week 1, previously even making training camp a goal. The Colts will smartly play it safe with their 34-year-old pass rusher, who tore his Achilles' last September and was rumored to have suffered a setback in the meantime. Considering his age and injury, anything the Colts get from Mathis this season should be considered a bonus.
Sun, Aug 2, 2015 09:17:00 AM

Coach Chuck Pagano admits the Colts will have to be "smart" with Robert Mathis (Achilles') this season.

"When he gets cleared, we’ll get him back on the grass," Pagano said. "Then when we get him back, we’ve got to be smart with how we get him back. ... I don’t know. If anybody can do it, I’m putting my money on him." Pagano's boilerplate comments are notable for what they don't contain — certainty about Mathis' return date and 2015 role. Mathis has promised he'll be ready for Week 1, but he's an obvious candidate for the reserve/PUP list.
