Giants re-signed QB David Carr to a one-year contract.
The No. 1 pick of the 2002 draft is returning to back up Eli Manning for the fifth time in six years. Reports that Carr could draw interest as a starter turned out to be predictably absurd. Carr has attempted just 61 passes the past five seasons. Mar 19 - 2:35 PM

The New York Post suggests the Buccaneers as a landing spot for free agent QB David Carr.

It's easy to connect dots from ex-Giants to the Bucs because Tampa Bay's defensive and offensive coordinators are both formerly Giants assistants. Carr will turn 34 before the season. If the Buccaneers truly have designs on bringing in legitimate competition for Josh Freeman, they'll aim higher than David Carr.

The Giants are expected to let free agent QB David Carr hit the open market.

ESPN New York reported last month that Carr was expected back as Eli Manning's backup, so it's a bit of a surprise. According to the New York Daily News, Carr wants to test his value, and "maybe see if he can battle for a job." We hope he's not holding his breath.

ESPN New York expects free agent David Carr to return as Eli Manning's backup in 2013.

With Manning entering his age-32 season in 2013, the Giants could decide to take a late-round flier on a potential successor as early as this year, but Carr should remain in New York for at least one more season. He's served as Manning's backup four of the past five years. The No. 1 pick of the 2002 draft has attempted just 61 passes since 2007.

Giants re-signed QB David Carr.

The No. 1 overall pick of the 2002 draft talked with the Bucs on Tuesday, but will return to the team where he's spent three of the past four years as Eli Manning's backup. Carr did not attempt a pass in 2011, and has appeared in parts of just 16 games since the end of the 2006 season. The Giants would be in rough shape if Carr were ever forced to take the reins, which is why he's a good fit in New York. Eli hasn't missed a game since '04.

Free agent QB David Carr is reportedly no longer option in Tampa Bay.

Carr drew early interest Tuesday as a potential backup to Bucs starter Josh Freeman, but a signing isn't going to happen. He would have been following former QBs coach Mike Sullivan down to Tampa. Carr is expected to decide between the Giants and another interested team.

The Giants have yet to contact free agent David Carr about returning in 2012.

Eli Manning's backup didn't play a single snap last season, and the New York Daily News thinks he may want to seek a job "behind a quarterback who’s not as good and durable" as Manning. The No. 1 overall pick of the 2002 draft has attempted just 58 passes since the end of the 2007 season.

Giants signed QB David Carr, formerly of the 49ers.

Carr's best NFL success came in preseason action and a few relief stints with the Giants from 2008-2009. He's not a better quarterback than Sage Rosenfels, though. The 32-year-old will likely be just the third quarterback in New York.

David Carr will be released Thursday, a source tells CSN Bay Area.

By releasing Carr, the Niners will clear up $2.375 million in cap room. If they are going to make a serious run at Nnamdi Asomugha, that will certainly help. The Niners are ready to roll with Alex Smith and rookie Colin Kaepernick at quarterback.

49ers QB David Carr is not expected to be on the team's Opening Day roster.

Offensive coordinator Greg Roman recently suggested Carr could compete for the starting quarterback job, but that was obvious "coach-speak." Releasing Carr would take the 49ers off the hook for his $2.375 million salary. The Niners are expected to pursue a different veteran to push Alex Smith and Colin Kaepernick.

David Carr has been told by the new 49ers coaching staff that he will be allowed to compete for the starting quarterback job.

"They told me they are going to roll the balls out there and the best player is going to play," Carr said. "I like that situation." It sounds fair in theory, but Carr has a better chance of getting released than starting Week 1. Coach Jim Harbaugh has gone out of his way to praise Alex Smith whereas he's yet to even mention Carr's name.

Jim Harbaugh has not mentioned David Carr's name since taking over as 49ers head coach in January.

Harbaugh "has essentially declined comment" whenever asked by reporters about Carr, who is owed an unreasonable $2.375 million salary. Clearly, he's not part of Harbaugh's plans. The 49ers will go forward with Alex Smith in the No. 1 quarterback spot and rookie Colin Kaepernick behind him. After cutting Carr, they could bring in someone like Charlie Frye to serve as a camp arm.

Backup QB David Carr has compared learning the 49ers' new offense during the lockout to "trying to learn a language without a teacher."

How quickly Carr picks up Jim Harbaugh's offense is not fantasy relevant, but his words speak to what so many around the NFL are going through. We are almost certainly going to see a sloppier, less refined product this season, if and when it happens.

As an assistant with the Raiders back in 2002, Jim Harbaugh reportedly graded No. 1 overall pick David Carr as a sixth-rounder.

While Harbaugh has stated his admiration for Alex Smith at least a half-dozen times since taking over as head coach, he's been coy on Carr's status. Based on his initial evaluation, Harbaugh will be looking to move in a different direction at backup QB.

49ers declared QB David Carr, K Joe Nedney, CB Tramaine Brock, CB Will James, LB Keaton Kristick, LB Thaddeus Gibson, LT Joe Staley, and OT Alex Boone inactive for Week 11 against the Bucs.

Alex Smith (shoulder) will back up Troy Smith. With James nursing a concussion, Tarell Brown will take over as the nickelback. Veteran Barry Sims is replacing Staley at left tackle.
