The Houston defense will be without LB Jadeveon Clowney (foot) on Sunday when they host the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Clowney will finish the 2015 regular season with 4.5 sacks and a left foot injury suffered in Week 16. "It’s football and injuries happen. You just got to prepare yourself to get better and get back, so you can get back out there with your team as soon as possible," said Clowney. The Texans D/ST is a back-end top-12 fantasy option in Week 17 at home. Jan 3 - 1:51 AM

The Houston defense will travel to Tennessee in Week 16 to face Titans QB Zach Mettenberger.

With Marcus Mariota (knee) out, Mettenberger will draw the start against the Texans. After Mariota went down in Week 15, the backup threw two interceptions, giving him five on the season to just three touchdowns. The Texans have been tough on opposing passers this season, allowing just 189.5 passing yards per game since Week 8. Mettenberger will have his work cut out for him, and the Texans D/ST will be a top-10 fantasy option this week.

The Houston defense travels to Indianapolis this week, where QB Matt Hasselbeck (ribs) is not guaranteed to start for the Colts.

This news comes from ESPN Colts reporter Mike Wells, and implies that there is a chance Charlie Whitehurst gets the start for Indianapolis this week with Hasselbeck still banged up. Houston is third among NFL teams in pass defense this season and is a top-10 fantasy option this week either way, but would receive a slight bump if Whitehurst is under center.

The Houston defense will have DE J.J. Watt on Sunday, despite a broken hand.

Watt leads the NFL with 13.5 sacks on the season and is expected to play this Sunday despite missing practice on Thursday and Friday due to a broken hand suffered on Wednesday. "He'll be good to go." Texans coach Bill O’Brien said Friday after practice. "He’s ready to go." Even with Watt in the lineup, the Texans D/ST won't be a recommended fantasy option in Week 14 when they host the New England Patriots.

The Houston defense is focused on stopping the Buffalo running game that is fifth among NFL teams at 136.7 yards per game.

"They’re very elusive. We have to rally to the ball. We preach every game about trying to get everybody to the ball and a lot of guys in on the tackle," said Houston OLB Jadeveon Clowney. The Texans have allowed just 70.0 rushing yards per game over their last four contests, which have all been wins for Houston. Week 13 success for the Texans D/ST will start with slowing LeSean McCoy, who will see a huge workload with RB Karlos Williams likely out. The Texans D/ST is a top-10 fantasy option this week.
Fri, Dec 4, 2015 02:51:00 AM

The Houston Texans are focused on slowing New Orleans wide receiver Brandin Cooks in Week 12, who has scored five touchdowns in his last three games.

Cooks has averaged 85.7 receiving yards in those three games and has at least four receptions in each game this season. "He’s a guy that you can throw screens to, you can throw shot plays to, intermediate routes, run him on reverses and speed sweeps and things like that. So, he’s a really good player," said Houston coach Bill O'Brien. The Houston defense has improved during a current three-game winning streak, but will have a tough Week 12 challenge in the New Orleans Saints. The Texans D/ST is a middling Week 12 fantasy option.

The Houston defense will look to build on recent success when they host the New York Jets in Week 11.

The Texans have allowed just four field goals in their last two games and haven't allowed a touchdown over their last ten quarters of play. The most recent Texans performance saw the team hold the high-scoring Cincinnati offense to just six points in a Week 10 win. The Texans D/ST is a middling option this week, but can be considered a reasonable streaming target for fantasy owners in need of D/ST help.
Sat, Nov 21, 2015 02:43:00 AM

The Houston Texans travel to Cincinnati in Week 10 to face the Bengals, who are third among NFL offenses in scoring, averaging 28.6 points per game.

The undefeated Bengals have scored less than 24 points in a single game just once this season, and will be a tough task for the underwhelming Houston defense. The Texans D/ST has allowed 29.0 points per game over their last five contests and won't be a recommended fantasy option on Monday night.
Wed, Nov 11, 2015 05:13:00 AM

The Houston Texans will face Tennessee backup quarterback Zach Mettenberger on Sunday as he gets the start in place of the injured Marcus Mariota.

Mariota injured his knee in Week 6 and will miss his second straight game. The Titans managed just seven points and 256 total yards in Mettenberger's Week 7 start, and the backup quarterback also threw two interceptions. The Houston D/ST has struggled this season, allowing 28.4 points per game, but is worth a look as a potential streaming option given their matchup this week.
Sat, Oct 31, 2015 03:10:00 AM

The Houston Texans will take on the revitalized Miami Dolphins offense in Week 7.

Miami came out after their Week 5 bye and dropped 434 total yards on the Tennessee Titans last Sunday under interim coach Dan Campbell. The Dolphins showed a renewed faith in their running game by handing the ball to running back Lamar Miller 19 times, by far a season-high. The lack of production from the Houston D/ST in the sack and turnover departments this season, in addition to the matchup with the suddenly intriguing Miami offense, makes the Texans defense an afterthought in fantasy leagues this week.
Thu, Oct 22, 2015 04:28:00 AM

The Houston Texans have forced just two turnovers through four games, which is tied for the lowest mark among NFL teams.

The cure could be coming soon for the Texans, who face the Indianapolis Colts on Thursday. The Indianapolis offense has turned the ball over 12 times in four games, which the highest total in the league. The Houston D/ST is a tough group to start in fantasy leagues right now, but if Andrew Luck (shoulder) is ruled out once again, the Texans could be used in a spot-start on Thursday.
Thu, Oct 8, 2015 03:39:00 AM

The Houston Texans will face the NFL's third-ranked offense in Week 4 when they travel to Atlanta to take on Matt Ryan and the Falcons.

The Texans are aware of not only the passing game success of Atlanta, but the recent success of running back Devonta Freeman as well. DC Romeo Crennel told the Houston Chronicle, "They ran through the Cowboys pretty good. They have a big offensive line. If Freeman gets to the edge, he can go. We have to have a total defensive effort." The Houston D/ST has been a mediocre fantasy option so far in 2015, as the group has struggled in the sack and turnover categories. Fantasy owners will want to bench the Houston D/ST this week in a difficult road matchup.

Houston NT Vince Wilfork expressed his frustration with Houston's 0-2 start and labeled "consistency" as a key for a potential turnaround.

"The only thing you can do is just look forward and make the corrections and just be more consistent. I think if we’ll be more consistent then we’ll get rolling," Wilfork said. The Houston defense has allowed 25.5 points per game in losses to Kansas City and Carolina, and has forced only one turnover through two weeks. The Texans D/ST will have a chance to turn things around in Week 3 as they host rookie quarterback Jameis Winston at home. The Houston defense is a top-ten fantasy option this week as they battle Tampa Bay.
Sat, Sep 26, 2015 03:11:00 AM

The Houston defense should get a boost in Week 2 as coach Bill O'Brien expects Jadeveon Clowney's workload to increase.

The Houston D/ST recorded two sacks in Week 1 against Kansas City, but was largely ineffective as Alex Smith threw for three touchdowns in a Chiefs win. The Texans defense was able to hold Jamaal Charles to 57 yards on 16 carries however, and will need equally tough run defense against Cam Newton and the Carolina Panthers' run-heavy scheme in Week 2. The Houston D/ST is at the back-end of the top-12 fantasy defenses this Sunday.
Fri, Sep 18, 2015 02:03:00 AM

Houston coach Bill O'Brien told the Houston Chronicle that LB Jadeveon Clowney will play Week 1.

The 2014 top draft pick did not play at all in the preseason, but appears to be ready to contribute in Week 1 after recovering from a knee injury. The return of Clowney adds firepower alongside J.J. Watt and increases the potential ceiling of the Houston D/ST in fantasy leagues. The Texans will host Alex Smith and the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 1.
