Saints placed TE Billy Miller on injured reserve with a torn Achilles' tendon, ending his season.
Miller, 32, is not under contract for 2010, so this devastating injury threatens his career. David Thomas is now the No. 2 tight end in New Orleans. Sat, Sep 5, 2009 06:34:00 PM

Saints TE Billy Miller has torn his right Achilles tendon and is out for the year.

Miller will undergo surgery on Monday. The Saints will have to pick up a tight end to back up Jeremey Shockey after Saturday's cuts. Give Shockey a nice uptick in your rankings without Miller around to cut into his production.

Saints TE Billy Miller has been diagnosed as an Achilles tendon injury.

It's believed that the tendon is torn and that Miller will be lost for the season, but the Saints won't know for sure until Friday. The Saints will likely have to pick up a free agent tight end for depth after next week's cuts.

Saints backup TE Billy Miller was carted off the field Thursday with a lower right leg injury.

"He looks like a guy that just has been told bad news," tweeted beat writer Jeff Duncan. It's bad news for the Saints, thin at tight end, and worse news for the 32-year-old Miller. Jeremy Shockey will get a bump in our projections if Miller's injury is serious.

Billy Miller caught three passes for 56 yards against the Panthers in Week 17.

Jeremy Shockey's tight-end handcuff closes out the season with an impressive 45 catches for 579 yards. The Saints will look to bring back the 31-year-old as a sure-handed insurance policy for the injury-prone Shockey.

Billy Miller will be the Saints' starting tight end in Week 17 vs. Carolina.

He isn't much of a receiving downgrade from Jeremy Shockey and should be active in the passing game. If Chris Gamble and Ken Lucas get good coverage on Marques Colston and Devery Henderson outside, Drew Brees could focus on hitting the seams with Miller and Lance Moore.

Billy Miller caught four balls for 38 yards in the Saints' Week 16 win.

Miller came on after Jeremy Shockey (ankle) went out and was an effective underneath target. If Shockey is out in Week 17, Miller will start and be a respectable TE1 option against Carolina in fantasy leagues that go that far.

Billy Miller caught caught three passes for 35 yards in a Week 15 loss.

He's still outproducing Jeremy Shockey on occasion. An apparent mental error by Miller, however, may have caused a Drew Brees pick in the second half. Miller has a surprising 485 yards on the year.

Billy Miller was held catch-less in the Saints' Week 11 win.

Jeremy Shockey has resumed every-down duties and while Miller might stay involved, he will remain an inconsistent and undesirable TE1 going forward.

Billy Miller caught five passes for 65 yards in Week 10.

Jeremy Shockey has yet to earn Drew Brees' trust, and Billy Miller just keeps on benefiting. Miller didn't see a target until Shockey's second-half tiff with Brees, so he racked up all 65 yards in the fourth quarter. He's a Brees favorite, but playing time will depend almost entirely on Shockey.

Billy Miller caught seven passes for 82 yards in Week 8.

One of the finer pass-catching backup TEs around, Miller capitalized on a less-than-healthy Jeremy Shockey to lead New Orleans in receptions in London. Don't expect more of this from Miller in the second half of the season. He is a reserve and will play much less when Shockey is at full strength.

Billy Miller caught four passes for 56 yards in Week 7.

He and Jeremy Shockey combined for 106 yards on nine catches with Drew Brees struggling to hook up with his wide receivers. Now that Shockey is healthy, expect Miller's numbers to fall off in the next few weeks.

Billy Miller caught three passes for 53 yards in Week 6 against the Raiders.

Miller has done a nice job subbing for the injured Jeremy Shockey, totaling 185 yards on 12 catches in four games. Not only has Drew Brees amazingly turned him into a fantasy asset, Mark Campbell even got into the action with three catches for 37 yards and a score.

Saints TE Billy Miller left Monday night's game after taking a huge hit in the open field and did not return.

It was a definite helmet-to-helmet collision and the tackler, Vikings CB Cedric Griffin, should face a fine. Miller eventually walked off the field under his own power and will probably be OK for Week 6. He finished with 61 yards on four receptions.

Saints TE Billy Miller caught three balls for 30 yards in a Week 4 win.

He's not special, but he'll keep desperate Jeremy Shockey owners afloat. Miller will return to the bench when Shockey returns, which is possible by Week 4.
