Free agent TE Robert Royal told the New Orleans Times-Picayune Friday that he wants to play for the Saints.
Lots of players want to be Saints because they're annual contenders and play an up-tempo style on both offense and defense. Royal, 33, was released by Cleveland in February. He's lost all semblance of playmaking ability. Fri, Jul 1, 2011 02:28:00 PM

Browns released TE Robert Royal.

The Browns' six Wednesday cuts combined to save nearly $17 million in 2011 salary, and nearly $19 million including bonuses. Royal was due over $2M after catching just five balls for 56 yards in 15 games (four starts) last season. He turns 33 in May and won't attract much interest in free agency.

Browns declared TE Robert Royal, WR Brian Robiskie, QB Brett Ratliff, DB Coye Francies, DB Gerard Lawson, LB David Veikune, LB Marcus Benard, and OG Billy Yates inactive for Week 12 against the Bengals.

Blocking specialists Michael Gaines and Greg Estandia will fill in at tight end.

Robert Royal's status for this week is in doubt due to a hamstring injury.

Royal left the loss to Pittsburgh early, causing guard Hank Fraley to see some snaps at tight end. Steve Heiden missed the game due to a knee injury. With both tight ends' status up in the air, the Browns signed Michael Gaines Tuesday. Third-stringer Greg Estandia is also available.

Browns TE Robert Royal (probable, foot/finger) returned to a full practice on Friday and is poised to play in Week 6.

A mix of rain and snow is expected at Heinz Field, however, which will likely limit an already putrid Browns passing "attack." Royal is sharing snaps about evenly with Steve Heiden, and should stay on fantasy waiver wires.

Browns TEs Robert Royal (foot, finger) and Steve Heiden (knee) were limited in Thursday's practice.

Royal has been bypassed by Heiden of late, but neither tight end is worthy of fantasy consideration this week against the Steelers.

Browns TE Robert Royal (foot, finger) was limited in practice Wednesday.

Royal is averaging just 19 yards per game and went catch-less in Week 5 against the Bills, perhaps because of his injuries. He is not even a TE2.

Robert Royal caught one pass for 14 yards in Week 2 against the Broncos.

Royal was a big part of the offense in the season opener, but took a backseat to Braylon Edwards while not being targeted until the fourth quarter versus Denver.

Robert Royal caught four passes for 60 yards and one touchdown in Week 1 against the Vikings.

So far so good for Kellen Winslow's replacement, who led the Browns in receptions and yards. He's still not more than a last-ditch TE2 option.

As expected, the Browns' initial training camp depth chart lists Robert Royal as the starting tight end.

He's ahead of Steve Heiden, who's been limited coming off a torn ACL and MCL, and upstart youngster Martin Rucker. Royal's blocking prowess will give him the edge here, but Rucker should lead Cleveland tight ends in catches.

New Browns TE Robert Royal is expected to spend "over 90 percent" of his time on the field as a blocker.

The Browns plan to not throw to Royal, but it isn't like they have many options at the moment. They need serious help in the receiving game. Royal might see 2-3 targets a week, but the plodding TE will be a poor bet for yardage.

Browns signed TE Robert Royal, formerly of the Bills. Scout.com's Adam Caplan reports the deal is worth $10 million over four years.

It only includes $3M guaranteed, but is essentially the same deal Buffalo gave Royal three offseasons ago. Now 31, Royal figures to be the Browns' starting tight end with Martin Rucker working in on passing downs. Neither is likely to catch more than 30 passes or be worth fantasy consideration.

Free agent TE Robert Royal told the Cleveland Plain Dealer Wednesday night that he's signed a deal with the Browns.

"Everything should be official by (Thursday)," he said. Royal is a decent blocker, but offers little in the pass game. He'd likely be Cleveland's starter if the season began today. Steve Heiden tore his ACL and MCL late last year.

Free agent TE Robert Royal is visiting the Jets on Saturday.

Royal would take Chris Baker's spot as the team's blocking tight end. He won't offer the same receiving ability, but he'll come at a cheaper price.

Bills released TE Robert Royal.

Royal was only due a $1.525 million salary, but he poses no downfield threat and missed three games last season with various injuries. He caught 33 passes to finish as the No. 31 overall fantasy tight end. Royal, 31, will now be looking at a minimum deal to back up elsewhere.
