Washington coach Jay Gruden said it's "not looking good" for LB/S Su'a Cravens (elbow) and SS Donte Whitner (quad) in Week 17.
Both players missed practice on Wednesday are in real danger of missing Washington's Week 17 matchup with the New York Giants. The Redskins D/ST will be an interesting mid-tier fantasy option on Sunday in a must-win game against the Giants, who could be interested in resting their starters at some point during the contest with a playoff spot already locked up. The Washington defense is last in the NFL in third-down defense, allowing opposing offenses to convert at a 48 percent clip.

The Redskins have struggled defensively in two recent losses, allowing 31.0 points per game while failing to force a single turnover. "Those are the key facets of winning football games and playing winning defense," said coach Jay Gruden of third-down defense, red-zone defense and creating turnovers. The Redskins D/ST has struggled recently but is an interesting potential streaming option on the road against the Philadelphia offense that hasn't score more than 15 points in a game since Week 10.

The Redskins D/ST has recorded at least three sacks in five consecutive games.

Washington is now tied for sixth among NFL defenses in sacks with 25 on the season thanks to the recent binge. Pressuring opposing quarterbacks has kept the Redskins D/ST competitive in fantasy leagues despite forcing just three turnovers since Week 5. DC Joe Barry's group will be a mid-range fantasy option in Week 11 at home against Green Bay.

Washington CB Josh Norman (concussion) has been cleared to travel with the team to London and will practice on Friday.

Friday's practice will officially determine Norman's Sunday availability, but it appears that the star corner has a decent shot to see the field. Norman's presence would be a boost to the Washington secondary that has played well of late, holding opposing teams to just 200.0 passing yards per game over the last four weeks. The Redskins D/ST is a borderline top-12 fantasy option this week.

Washington DC Joe Barry praised rookie nickle CB Kendall Fuller's strong play since being activated in Week 4.

"He already really gets it and that’s why I talk about his awareness, his savviness, his instincts, whatever you want to call it. He has that and it’s really neat," said Barry of the rookie. Fuller, a third round draft pick, took over nickel duties when Dashaun Phillips suffered a hamstring injury in Week 3. Since Fuller took over, Washington has allowed just 183.3 passing yards per game in three victories. The Redskins D/ST is a mid-tier fantasy option in Week 7 at Detroit, but is trending up.

The Washington defense has been gouged for 4.9 yards per carry and 133.0 rushing yards per game through four weeks.

DC Joe Barry blames poor tackling for his team's inability to stop the run. "It’s not one clear, clean specific tackle that we say, ‘Hey if we clean this up, we’re good,’ " Barry said. "It’s really across the board, and it’s been frustrating." Washington will look to reverse this trend in Week 5 at Baltimore against the Ravens' 18th ranked rushing attack. While the Redskins D/ST has forced a trio of turnovers in consecutive weeks, this group won't be an advised fantasy option in Week 5.

When speaking with the media on Thursday, Washington DC Joe Barry did not divulge the team's plans for matching up cornerbacks on Odell Beckham this week.

Washington CB Josh Norman strictly played the right side of the Redskins secondary through the first seven quarters of the season. In the fourth quarter of Week 2 however, Norman began to shadow Dallas' Dez Bryant, a tactic the team may use again in Week 3 to defend Giants WR Odell Beckham. "We've come up with a game plan for Sunday against the Giants, and we’re going to feel good with it and we’re going to roll with it," said Barry. The Redskins D/ST isn't an appealing Week 3 fantasy option no matter where Norman is lined up.

The Washington defense will face Dallas quarterback Kellen Moore in Week 17.

The matchup boosts the Redskins D/ST into the top-10 for Week 17 in fantasy leagues, as Moore has proved to be incredibly inaccurate in his first two games as a pro. Moore completed just 13 of 31 pass attempts at Buffalo in Week 16 and has four interceptions in the last two weeks. Washington has only intercepted nine passes this season but is a strong bet to increase that number against Dallas this week.

The Washington defense will travel to Philadelphia in Week 16 to face the Eagles, who are third among NFL teams with 27 turnovers in 2015.

The Philadelphia offense was especially generous in Week 15 when they handed four turnovers to the Arizona Cardinals. Chip Kelly's offense has turned the ball over in 13 of 14 games this season, including seven games with more than one giveaway. The turnover potential for the Redskins D/ST this week is attractive but this group is not strong enough to start on the road in fantasy leagues on Saturday.

The Washington defensive line will be tested on Sunday, as multiple players will likely be missing when the team takes on Chicago.

The playing status of defensive ends Stephen Paea (toe) and Jason Hatcher (pinched nerve) are looking dicey, leaving the team thin on the front-end. Washington feels they have the depth to survive, however. "We have a very deep front here so that’s kind of a plus for us if someone goes down," defensive end Chris Baker said. "There’s always someone ready to step up." The Washington defense is 25th in the NFL in run defense this season, and will likely get a large dose of Matt Forte on Sunday in a game with rain expected. The Redskins D/ST is not a viable streaming option this week.
Sat, Dec 12, 2015 03:38:00 AM

The Washington defense will face quarterback Matt Cassel in Week 13 as he takes over for Tony Romo (collarbone).

With Romo on the shelf again, Cassel will provide fantasy owners with a streaming target for the remainder of the 2015 season. Cassel has five touchdowns to five interceptions on the year, and the Cowboys averaged 16.3 points per game in his four previous starts before Romo's return. Washington is coming off a three interception game against Eli Manning last week and could be in line for more turnovers on Monday night. The Redskins D/ST is a viable streaming option in fantasy leagues this week due to the matchup.
Fri, Dec 4, 2015 03:06:00 AM

The Washington defense will attempt to contain New York QB Eli Manning in the second 2015 meeting between the Redskins and Giants.

Manning threw for 279 yards and two touchdowns when these teams met in Week 3, with both touchdown passes coming in the fourth quarter of a 32-21 Giants win. The Redskins D/ST is coming off a loss at Carolina, where Panthers QB Cam Newton tossed five touchdowns, and will look to turn things around in Week 12 against their divisional foe. The Redskins D/ST won't be a recommended fantasy option this week.
Thu, Nov 26, 2015 02:22:00 AM

The Washington Redskins will host the red-hot passing game of the New Orleans Saints in Week 10.

Drew Brees has thrown 10 touchdowns and averaged 446 passing yards per game over the last two weeks, led by his magnificent Week 8 performance against the New York Giants. Brees hasn't been quite as good on the road as he has been at home in 2015, but the passing prowess of the Saints will still be a tough task for the Washington defense. The Redskins D/ST is a bottom-tier fantasy option in Week 10.
Fri, Nov 13, 2015 03:33:00 AM

The Washington defense will face the New England Patriots and the NFL's highest scoring offense in Week 9.

New England is averaging an impressive 35.6 points per game this season and has scored less than 30 points just once in their seven wins. The Washington defense has struggled against the run in 2015, so stopping LeGarrette Blount and Dion Lewis will provide a challenge in addition to scheming against Tom Brady. The Redskins D/ST is not worth starting consideration in fantasy leagues this week.
Thu, Nov 5, 2015 07:13:00 AM

The Washington defense rolls into their Week 8 bye with just three interceptions in seven games.

The Redskins D/ST failed to force Tampa Bay rookie Jameis Winston to throw a single pick in Week 7 and only one NFL team (Dallas) has fewer than Washington's three interceptions on the season. Things won't get any easier for the Washington pass defense after the bye, as they travel to New England to face the Patriots and quarterback Tom Brady, who has thrown just one interception in 2015.
